ForewordThe purpose of this book is twofold: to provide ensemble teaching material for intermediate flutists,and to be a source of “quick-study” repertoire for advanced players. I think flute students will enjoythe light, entertaining arrangements that contain useful lessons in breath control, articulation, tuning,and ensemble playing. That same entertainment value will give college and professional players piecesthat will sound good with very little rehearsal time.

The titles listed below were chosen to give a variety of arrangements for almost any concert situation.The pieces are short – almost all are under 3 minutes – making them perfect for encores or to fill holesbetween longer recital repertoire.

La VoltaFor 4 C Flutes

Italian for “The Turn,” La Volta was a dance favored at the court of Elizabeth I of England inthe late 16th century. This energetic dance featured the man lifting his partner by the waist while turning in time to the music. The tune was written by the brilliant William Byrd, one of the composers of Elizabeth’s Royal Chapel.

This is a free-form imagining of what Bach’s beautiful Sarabande would sound like if it were written for four parts instead of one. The increased number of parts should not destroy the soloistic nature of the piece, however. Two famous English lullabyes are combined here. The first, the haunting COVENTRY CAROL depicts mothers comforting their children endangered by the murderous King Herod. GREENSLEEVES was a popular folk tune with a long history by the time William Chatterton Dix set his Christmas lullaby “What Child Is This?”to it in 1865.
