Philadelphia Eecord. ? - : It is reported that white servants are rapidly replacing colored help in tho towns of Southwestern Georgia. Capitalists from Chicago, Pitts burg and Wales havo located a tin-pla- to mill at Joliet, III., to cost 8500,000. Baltimore's now sugar refinory at Curtis Bay opened on the 12th inst., with a daily capacity of 1,200 to 1,500 barrels. ' Tho exports of agricultural "Im plements of domestic manufacture, according to the Now York Press, increased 82,119,772 in 1886, to $4,-246,0- 79 in 1889. Canary birds were liberated at a New York dinner. Four poverty-stricke- n workers committed . sui- cide in one day there. In'' the same city 100,000 men are idle.' ' Of tin plate the imports into the United States during the year end ing June 30, 1890, just published, amounted to 180.060,925 pounds. valued at 820,928,150. Nearly all of it came from England. . St. Louis is now tho largest fur market in the United Stntes. At a recent sale of pells in that city more than a million skint of the coon, mnskrat, skunk, mink,' gray fox and opossum were disposed oi. American women1 are said to rank highest both as to the number and importance of their inventions. Tho Philadelphia woman who in vented the barrel hooping machine added 820,000 n year to her income. Tho Eureka street-sweep- er . is a woman's invention: so is the device for abating tho running noise on elevated railroads, and so, also, a horse shoe machine that turns 'out 1,200 finished shoes in an hour.' A stalwart young man at Leav enworth, Ran., recently accepted a wager that he could not stand a quart of water dropped into his open hand, drop by drop, from a night of three feet. Before 500 drops had fallen into his hand he almost cried with pain and said be bad enough. After a little water bad fallen each drop seemed to crush his hand, and a blister in the center of it was the result. Boston Journal. , v An English engineer has de signed, and is now manufacturing, a portable cross-cu- t saw, that is, a large two-ma- n saw, that can be folded up into small compass. It is really a flexible chain of saw-teet- h riveted together. Wnen folded up it can bo put into a caso 8 inches long, 4 inches wide,l inches thick. Its weight is only 2 pounds. The saw is designed for the uso of sur- veyors, explorers and others to whom portability is an important consideration. 3ienj SUiDcrtiscmtnts. The Planters' Monthly. FOR MARCH, 1801. Sculptor Schmid Going to Hawaii to Submit Hia Model.

Rupert Schmid, the local sculptor, will leave this city on Wednesdaynext for a trip to tha HawaiianIslands. He is to consult QueenLiliaokalani and Colonel Macfarlaneabout the sculpture of a statue of thelate King Kalakaua. The sculptoreudeavored to take a death mask ofthe King, but in the hurry and con-

fusion of the ceremonies the oppor-

tunity was missed. He was, how-

ever, provided with a number ofphotographs, and, having met theKing in life, he has since prepareda model of the monarch. The monu-ment is to cost 15,000, an organiza-tion in Honolulu having been formedexpressly for the purpose of erectingthis tribute of respect to Kalakaua. The figure will bo of heroic size andis to stand on a plainly inscribedpedestal.

Mr. Schmid's model stands abouttwo feet hieh and is a remarkablyfine piece of work. The bearing ofKalakaua is majestic and noble. Heis represented in an erect position, with his kingly robes artisticallythrown back, the left leg slightly in-

clined forward and the right handand arm extended. In his left handbe holds that treaty with the UnitedStates which the Hawaiians value asthe best act of their King's life. Thesculptor's idea is to place Kalakaua

i i iioerore nis suDjecia iu iuu aui ui. con-ferring on them that benefit. Thework as far as portraiture is concerned is excellent. There is reposeand dignity in the handling and thefigure is the work of an able sculptor.

There aro two or three marblebusts of King Kalakaua extant, butthis will be the first full ngure. &

Does it seem discreet to constructa wind-mot- or of wood, such weak, perishable material, when it is de-

signedly held aloft in the most ex-

posed position and compelled to faceeery storm?

It's mission is to be out iu allweather and endure all exposures. It should, therefore, be made of themost enduring and the strongestmaterials, and aside from the work-ing sails, present the least possiblesurface to the grasp of the tempest.

Where lightness is so importantand weight so detrimental as in awindmiil, it is an error to add weightwhere strength can be more eilet-tu-all- y

gained by using stronger maie-ria- l.

The manufacturers of the Aermotormake the eails, bands aud arm.3of the wheels of steel. G:her nansrequiring strength are mailo of thesame material.

The history of one farm machineis the history of all. The huge four-hors- e

wooden reaper became thecompact two-hors- e self-rak- e reaperof greater efficiency. The on wieldly,wood-fram- e, four-horse- , self bindingharvester that broke of its ownweight, has given place to th snug, trim, light-stee- l, two-hor-se machine. In each case it is a lighter machinedoing more and better work withless power. The great, clumsy, wooden hulk of a windmill, thetarget of every tempest, sufferingmore exposure and used more hoursof the day than any other farm toolwill as surely make way for thesmaller, more compact and moreefficient steel Aermctor sold by theHawaiian Hardware Company.

Like unto the wife who halvesyour sorrows and doubles ycur joys,a geared Aermotor and its attach-ments will do one half more workand cost less than one-ha- lf the priceof the old style wooden outfit doingless work. Less than one-ha- lf thespace is used and double the room isleft in the barn. The weight is lessthan half that of wooden outfits con-sequently freight charges le?s thanone-ha-

Like tho steamer that ets out on .

a journey while sail boats wait forwind and tide, the Aermotor workswhile other windmills stand idlewaiting for wind. An expert me-chanic is not required to set up thisoutfit, anyone can place it in posi-tion. It costs about the price of onehorse and will do the work of four.Like interest, it works while yousleep, it neither gets tired or eatsoats.

They are sold only by HawaiianHardware Company, Fort street, opposite fc'preckels' Bank, Honolulu.

THE PLANTERS' MONTHLY.

The Planters' 3Ionthly for .Marchis out and is a more than usuallyfoil and instructive number. Thereis an interesting quotation from thecircular of Mr. Jag. Dunn, the Ha-

waiian Consul at Glasgow, on theabject of the relative value or

sweetening power of beet as com-

pared with cano sugar. There isin beet sugar a remarkable neutralelement known as " Eaffinose,"which constitutes from two to five

per cent, of its total weight. As itis perfectly harmless except thatbeing absolutely devoid of sweet-ness, it involves a loss to the con-

sumer equal to tho per centago inwhich it exists. That is, from twoper cent, in tho best to five percent, in the poorest beet sugar-Thi- s

" Raffinoso " is understood tobe a natural product originallypresent in the roots, and not fullyeliminated in the process of manu-

facture Singularly enough thisunwelcome element has a polariz-

ing effect of the same character assucrose, that is, it rotates the lightpassing through the solution whichcontains it in the same direction, bnt with nearly double the rotatorypower of sucrose. Henc a sugar(as beet) containing Itaflinoseshows a polarization in excess ofthat which represents the realcrystallizable sugar. This has at-

tracted the attention of the variousbeet root associations of Europewho adopted a rule allowing six-

pence per degree of raflinose with-out correcting tho polarization. However, a temporary agreementhas beeu arrived at, pending thisconference of sugar chemists to beheld next year.

An article by Professor Wileyon beet cultivation places tho yieldper acre at from 4 to --0 tons, rather a wide margin, the pricepaid which is now the basis of cal-

culating in making estimates at Sito 85 a ton, and tho cost of manum a a

xactnre oi raw aDout cents perpound. But as raw beet is bitterand must be refined, and the refin-

ing costs one cent per lb., homemanufactured beet sugar cannot b

put on the table under 3 cents, thoforeign sugar used in the Statescosts (including duty of 2 cents) t,or best granulated 6 cents per lb.

Wo have a full account of a newplant of machinery for thoPaauhauMill nearly completed at tho Hono-lulu Iron Works. It is a six-rolle- r

in three pairs, with maceration ar-

rangements. The whole work ofthe Rugar-hous- e, including evapor- -

be started early in April. The same forced draft furnaces

in use at Kealia by Mr. J. X. S.Williams arc shown above to bedoing excellent work.

Professor Van Slyke, formerly ofPunahou, contributes an analysesof the milk of the cocoanut, beingthe first, with one exception, everpublished.

An article on Kamie deals ratherwith the comparatively easy matterof culture than with the puzzlehow best to get rid of tbo gum.

Contributions on diseases andenemies of the sugarcane fromvarious portions of the sugar-growin- g

work contain much valu-

able information, and go far tomake this an interesting number.

Berlin, March 5. Official Gov-

ernment statistics have been pre-pared on the 2172 cases of tuber-culosis treated by the Koch method.Of the cases of internal tuberculosis13 are reported cured, 171 consider-abl- y

improved. 194 improved, and46 died ; while of the cases of ex-

ternal tuberculosis 15 are reportedcured, 148 considerabljr improved,238 improved, and 9 died. Thesuccess of Koch's remedy has exceeded every anticipation.

Under the new apportionmentbill no state will lose any represen-tatives. It will give a House of356 members, being 24 more thanat present. Alabama will gain 1,as also Arkansas, California. Colo-

rado, Georgia, Kansas. Massachu-setts, Michigan, Missouri, NewJersey, Oregon, Washington andWisconsin. Illinois will gain 2,as also will Minnesota, Pennsyl-vania and Texas, while Nebraskawill cain 3. If the election of 1888is taken as a basis of estimating thepolitical distribution of the twenty-fou- r

new members, the Republicanswill have one more than two-thir- ds

of the addition to the House; butif the election of 1S90 is to be takenas a guide, there will be about aneven division of the new strength. It will not. under the new appor-tionment, be too large a represen-tative body. With 62,000,000 popu-lation, a House of 356 is nottoo largo. Great Britain, with35,000,000, has a Commons of G70

members, and France, with 38.000,-00- 0,

has a Chamber of 557 Depu-ties. So, too, Germany and Austriahare much larger Houses, in pro-portion to tho population, than isproposed for the United States. Thebasis upon which the new apportionment rests is tho giving of onerepresentative to every 173,901 in-

habitants. San Jose Mercury.

"Higher education, it seems tome, is one of the chief reasons whymore girls do not many. It hasmade them more independent, andhas qualified them to be more self- -

supporting. JSow that tne atner- -

ent professions are open to mem, they have the broad neias oi litera-ture, and they hold professorships, and the result of it all is that theyhave outgrown the necessity of thechampionship of man.

"Women formerly were mororomantic than they are now. Theirdomestic duties their spinning andweaving allowing their thoughtsto wander usually to some manwhom thev idolized and withwhom marriage meant congenialityand happiness. Another reasonwhy fewer women marry in thesedays is because of inherited wealth. When, with child-lik- e dependence, woman turns to man lor supportand protection, there naturally ismore flflVptinn and conseauenuv agreater inclination to marry. The.woman who watcnes ior uei

het from which daily needs aresupplied is happier, as a rule, manher wealthy neighbor, wno nabnever had to consider the cost ofanything, who has but to wish andhave every wish gratihed.

"Tha knowledge of thisunaouni--

edly prevents many an heiressfrom marrying, and the third rea-son is that old maids are no longerlooked down upon as they were.mere is no longer any stigma upuuthem. Now if woman chooses toremain unmarried nobody says anything. She chooses her kind of lileand her choice is respected."

A Timely Hint.Every merchant says un ex
