HOW DID WE DO IT?Step 1: Enabling Creativity

Step 2: Painting & Creating the Stencils

Step 3: Spray Painting and Exhibiting

The group used warm-up games and excersises to get to know each other and work together as a team. Then they explored ways of representing situations where inclusion and exlusion occur using clay. The group then brainstormed words that they felt represented inclusion and exclusion after discussing everyone’s clay images. The large group was divided into smaller groups and each small group picked two words that represented inclusion, and two that represented exclusion. The groups then took body images of each other in groups and individually that represented their chosen words.

The facilitators helped the smaller groups to begin designing the backgrounds for their circle posters by asking them to think about what colours and designs they thought represented inclusion and exclusion. While the groups began to paint their circle backgrounds individuals worked with Mauricio on Photoshop turning their photos into stencils. There are di!erent ways to do this; one way is to go to Filters, then click on Sketch, and "nally click on Stamp. Yvonne demonstrated to the group outside how to spray paint a stencil e!ectively.

The images that were modi"ed on Photoshop were printed onto strong acetate and the group cut out the stencils. Everyone went outside and spray painted the stencils onto the painted circular backgrounds. The work was exhibited in the Camden Palace Community Art Centre in Cork City during the May"eld Arts Youth Perspectives Seminar and in conjunction with the European Citizenship Postcard Project exhibition for a week. The work was also exhibited on the day of Globalfest 2010 in the Bishop Lucy Park in Cork City, where hundreds of people had the opportunity to see these colourful and vibrant works that addressed the theme of inclusion and exclusion in Ireland and in the world today.
