VIP ProgrammeFair: 25 – 27 AprilPreview & Vernissage: 24 April

Welcome to Art Brussels 2014SPOTLIGHT ON BELGIAN COLLECTORS We look forward to welcoming you to the 32nd edition of Art Brussels, which – within a continuing

spirit of creative and artistic renewal - features several new initiatives. For the first time, the fair

will stage an exhibition focused on showcasing works from selected private collections. This year’s

inaugural exhibition (and the fair’s flagship artistic project) bears the title Portrait of the Collector

as a Work of Art, and will bring together highlights from the collections of the Art Brussels’

Collectors Committee, comprised of some of the most outstanding Belgian collectors. The latter are

internationally known for their passion, dedication, knowledge, and expertise and for discovering

and acquiring artists at a very early stage in their careers. Art Brussels, with the collaboration of

Louis Vuitton, will thus pay tribute to a selected number of these collectors and highlight specific

works from their collections, as well as shed light on what motivates them and how they approach

art collecting, thus also generating a discussion about the practice of collecting, which lies at the

heart of the raison d’être of every art fair. This unique project would not be possible without the

generous partnership of Louis Vuitton, and the additional support of Anglo Belge Special Risks,

who are our exclusive partners in this unique endeavour.

GALLERIES Apart from the renewal of each edition, Art Brussels continues to maintain its profile as a fair

that brings together emerging artists and galleries with more established ones. At the same time

it continues to reinforce and build upon its identity as a ‘discovery fair’ and the place where one

can identify artists at the beginning of their careers. Indicatively, this year the FIRST section, which

includes young and upcoming galleries that have never shown at the fair before, will be enlarged

after a record number of applications. FIRST, which is supported by Swatch, is a unique section

at Art Brussels as it is upon invitation only. In addition to FIRST, 75 galleries will be exhibiting in

the YOUNG section, meaning that almost half of the fair is dedicated to emerging and younger

generation artists. This year, more emphasis will also be placed on individual presentations of

artists, in the SOLO section, providing the opportunity to see the work of an artist more in-depth,

and allowing for larger scale projects. Art Brussels is partnering, for the second time with Pirelli, for

the Pirelli Prize, which will be awarded to the best SOLO presentation.

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGNAs part of our goal to renew the spatial character of Art Brussels every year, and to strive to

improve the viewing conditions and the experience of the fair, as well as our commitment to

supporting young Belgian talent, this year we have invited the Antwerp-based architects ONO

Architectuur (recently nominated for the Young Architect of the Year Award 2013) to design the

fair. The scenography for Art Brussels 2014 sets out to support the fair’s ambitions by giving every

visitor something to take home: ‘a souvenir remembrance’. In between the rich variety of art on

display, the interventions will form recurring points connected by one collective theme. This theme

extends certain qualities found in the local context, the city of Brussels and, more specifically, the

emblematic moment of Expo ’58, where the fair grounds are situated, thus grounding the art fair

in the spirit of its location as well extending the visitor’s experience beyond the fair’s boundaries.

Walking through the spaces of the fair, the visitor will slowly build up impressions and be able to

discover all kinds of connections between the different ‘scenes’. Moreover, the construction of the

scenographic elements will allow for disassembly and reuse, significantly reducing the amount of

waste material.

new at the fairNew to this year’s edition is CURATOR’S VIEW, a special section featuring thematic, group

exhibitions curated either by a curator, an artist, or the participating gallery itself. This year,

Art Brussels will once again host 6 artist and curator–run, not-for-profit spaces from all over

Belgium, each of which has been invited to present a special project for the fair, thus highlighting

practices that are more experimental. The spaces featured this year are: NICC (Brussels), Objectif

(Antwerp), LLS 387 (Antwerp), CIAP (Hasselt), Hotel Charleroi (Charleroi), and Kiosk (Gent).

Finally, together with the National Lottery, Art Brussels is launching a new curatorial competition

(by invitation), providing the opportunity for a young curator to organise an exhibition drawn

from the unique collection of the National Lottery on the theme of games of chance. This will be

presented exclusively during Art Brussels, in a specially designated space, in the fair grounds.

ARTISTIC PROJECTSWe are also very proud to present, in the pages of this brochure, our new communication campaign

– which is entrusted each year to an artist, as a special project. In line with the fair’s commitment

to highlighting the position of Brussels as Europe’s most upcoming art city and strengthening its

relationship with the city of Brussels and its artists and institutions, Brussels-based photographer

Jimmy Kets (BE, 1979) has shot a series of photos that perfectly capture the quirky charm and

individual character of Europe’s capital, zooming in on intimate, sometimes offbeat, but telling

details, that impart Brussels its very special identity. And don’t miss the special collector’s edition

of the Art Brussels bag, this year designed by Rinus Van de Velde (BE, 1983). Finally, following the

success of last year, both THE STAGE and THE CINEMA will continue this year. THE STAGE, a

specially designed amphitheatre at the entrance of Hall 3, will again host an exciting programme of

discursive activities (talks, debates, encounters with artists, performances); while THE CINEMA, a

specially designed space in Hall 1, will again feature a curated programme of short video and film

works.

FOCUS: BRUSSELSIn April, Brussels will once again become the artistic focal point of Europe’s centre and capital. The

city continues to attract international attention and more newcomers in terms of artists, galleries

and curators. This, in addition to the committed cultural institutions that already exist, is solidifying

Brussels’ reputation as one of Europe’s most interesting and promising contemporary art cities. We

look forward to welcoming you to discover all of the above and more at the 32nd edition of the fair,

and to enjoy the rich variety of artistic practices and projects in the fair’s unmistakeable convivial

and welcoming atmosphere.
