This project builds on the Gallery's collection of these beautiful prints. It provides them with their own purpose-built Web site, where you can zoom in on each print, watch video master classes on Japanese wood cut techniques and see local musicians playing traditional Japanese musical instruments. Where this site differs from most gallery Web sites is it allows you to take elements of the artworks and recombine them to tell your own story. This story-telling system, Stories from Old Japan, has really captured people's imaginations. Each element of Stories of Old Japan has been drawn from the artworks. The characters, backgrounds and objects have been taken directly from the artworks. Other elements, such as the actions and the music, have been inspired by the artworks. The music, in particular, is a terrific example of how this connection to the artworks has played out. To compose the music, the musicians were given high-quality images of the artworks, along with the stories behind them and the emotions that we thought each artwork could represent. Inspired by the artworks and their stories, they created original compositions representing the 16 emotions in the game.
