‘How do I get those orchids off the table?’ That was the first thing that crossed my mind when asked to design a home decoration accessory for the orchid. This inspired me to the extent that I developed a complete style guide for the orchid in cooperation with Art of Life.

The orchid is a very unique and exceptionally diverse plant! Its variegated colour draws attention in every interior. This even more so if you make the effort to combine different orchids; this will bring out the best of the plants. They virtually serve as a painting in an interior.The inspiration for this design I take from my stay in Indonesia in the nineties, where it is natural that interior and exterior blend, just as in- and outdoor plants do. After my last design, plant lamp ‘Bucket Light’, I now hope, in cooperation with Art of Life, to give the orchid a special place in the interior. The place it deserves! I invented a special and unique suspended system for the plant, the ‘ORQUID’. Using this system the plant can hang anywhere without restrictions. But for the enthusiast..... the ORQUID can also be placed on the table. My fondness for this plant is obvious in the design. Out of the laser cut, dome shaped holder blades project which are reminiscent of the plant. With these blades the design can also be placed on a table.

For each design I rely on my intuition. No one is interested in drawn-out and complex stories about dead-simple utensils. I am looking for simplicity and balance between function and beauty. This regardless whether it concerns a dresser, such as my latest design ‘Montigny’, presented at the ‘Salone del Mobile’ in Milan, or a beautiful suspended system for the orchid. The interior accessory must be able to tell its own story. Each product takes its raison d’être from this.

The interior trends I present in this Style Guide are inspired by the Salone del Mobile. The trend images, all in their own way, blend modern design, colour, form and orchids with the interior. The Style Guide offers you inspiration to give the orchid a key position in your home.

With the ORQUID I strive to blend the interior and exterior in an interesting way. This provides a peaceful atmosphere in the living room; it is also fantastic to surround yourself with nature’s organic shapes. What remains is to wish you lots of fun and inspiration for your interior with this Style Guide.

Salone Milano DEL MOBILE

As we do each year, we let ourselves be inspired at the Salone del Mobile, where we see the latest trends in the area of interior design.

In particular we observed simple forms and the use of soft pastels this year, with occasional fluorescent accents. I myself for instance made a steel cabinet for Linteloo in a unique powder coating. The texture was a little fluorescent and velvety.

We saw fine fabrics such as velvet, but also a sur-prisingly high number of African Vlisco-like printed (knitted) fabrics. Nomandism as source of inspiration also seems to be the new trend. Especially the Ital-ians were into colourfulness in the interior.

The time of recycling of materials, sober shades and black-and-white are clearly over. For the iconic brand Safilo, Marc Newson had designed great eyewear, in particular interesting for the gradient glasses made of Optyl, a super light plastic with shape memory. The eyewear designs were highly organic, almost flower- or butterfly shaped, and the glasses came in a kind of light and dark metallic tones in blue en orange.

‘The Architect’ is at home in an interior with geometric forms and a retro feeling to it, completed with fluorescent accessories, such as hot pink. Marble is a trend that is back, but also other types of natural stone are natural products that return with this trend. This all finished with a matt finish, such as design accessories with a powder coating.

‘The Expressionist’ expresses himself with an abundance of colour. This world traveller shows what he/she stands for! Deep colours dominate. Fabrics are fine and soft such as velvet & knitwear. Prints are exuberant – think especially of the flower prints of African printed fabrics. Arts and crafts are also at home in this trend. ‘The Expressionist’ sees himself as a modern nomad.

the reforMer

‘The Reformer’ surrounds himself with natural (sometimes raw) materials and colours. Of course the focus in this trend is on sustainability. Rattan is an example of a classic returning to the interior in a modern fashion. But also think of great textured wallpaper, inspired on nature. Maybe less obvious is oxidation of metals or use of copper. Plants in the interior remain impor-tant and special consideration is given to new, practical ways, to integrate them.

orchidS WITH THIS TRENDMerging and combining is one of the trends for 2015. For this the use of an intense and multi layered pallet of colours is important. By combining different orchids with diverse earthly colour tones, structures and designs, plants are incorporated into your interior in a practical way.

orchidS WITH THIS TRENDWhether it concerns pastels or fluorescent colours: within the orchid family both can be found. The trend variegated colour, also known as the ombre-effect or gradient, has nature as source of inspiration. Among orchids there are numerous examples which exhibit a wonderful fusion of colours.

orchidS WITH THIS TRENDThe world traveller has been connected to the orchid family for years. Where the roots of one orchid are in South Africa, others stem from South America or South East Asia. A genuine nomad. This is also apparent through the diver-sity and versatility within this family. Abundant prints, velvet soft leaves, deep colours: the orchid is an expressionist par excellence.

ABOUT orchidS:Because of the many different flower shapes and colours the orchid is a real design object. There are as many as 25,000 species and each plant is unique. The best known is the Phalaenopsis, also known as the butterfly orchid. This classic beauty alone is available in hundreds of different shapes and colours. Other top orchids in the collection are Oncidium, Vanda, Dend-robium, Dendrobium Nobilé, Miltonia, Cattleya orchid, Cambria, Cymbidium Paphiopedilum, Zygopetalum and other remarkable orchids.

care:A big misconception is that orchids are difficult to take care of. To the contrary, it is easy! With a little extra attention almost all orchids will flower several times a year. Of course, the thousands of different species of orchids will not all shine with the same care. But still, there are some general tips which make most orchids happy. orchids like:• A light spot• Room temperature of 18 to 20 °C

orchids do not like:• Wet feet• Draft• Direct sunlight• Being near central heating or stove • The fruit bowl! Fruits produce gasses which make

the flowers age faster.

tipS FOR WATERING:• Do not pour water on the plant, but onto the

pot soil.• Keep the orchids dryer in the winter than in the

summer. They are resting. Only give water sparingly.

NICE TO KNOW!• Pantone has declared the orchid ‘Colour of the

Year’, namely ‘Radiant Orchid’.• The orchid originates from Mongolia. According to

scientists the plant already grew there 120 million years ago.

• Phalaenopsis is the most popular orchid in The Netherlands. This specie was discovered by a Dutch botanist, Dr. Blume, on Java in 1825.

• Did you know it sometimes takes up to ten years for an orchid to arrive in the living room?

• Legend has it that somewhere, deep in the jungle, there is a very rare black orchid.

• In Brasil the orchid is often offered as a gift to a lover. Each flower is a kiss.
