As the English Department Chair, she established the highest standards for her students, especially those in her dual credit courses. With her passion and appreciation for English literature, journalism and written expression, she served as a role model for fellow teachers. She insisted that newspaper students be alert, curious and truthful. Revered as a teacher, her legendary long hours spent grading have fueled generations of Tigers to success. Judith Learmann is honored as the 2018 Outstanding Educational Professional.

Second Class Petty Officer Wayne Bandy exemplifies courage and love of country. An outstanding trumpet player and singer, he enlisted in the military after his 1939 graduation from Waynesville High School. On Dec. 7, 1941, a “day that will live in infamy,” he was aboard the USS Arizona amid one of the momentous events in World War II history. He was killed that morning, along with 2,400 other Americans. He and his fellow musicians in U.S. Navy Band Number 22 had won a competition the night before, and the trophy bearing his name is on display at the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii. His remains were never recovered. The WHS Baseball Field is named in his honor, and he is memorialized in the Waynesville Cemetery. Wayne Bandy is honored with the 2018 Lifetime Achievement - Alumni Award posthumously.

A 1965 Waynesville High School graduate, Billy Lee Ransdall epitomizes the role of a public servant, successful businessman, community volunteer and family man. In 1976, he was elected a Waynesville City Councilman and later, Mayor. As State Representative for the 148th District, he helped bring $53 million to Pulaski County. In 2006, he was elected Presiding Commissioner for Pulaski County. Later, he served on the Missouri State Tax Commission. An entrepreneur, he has been a barber, owned a Coors distributorship, multiple recycling operations, apartment units and a family farm. A dedicated church member and a strong supporter of Fort Leonard Wood, he is a member of AUSA, Committee of 50 and helped found the Leonard Wood Institute and SOP. Aidan Zollman, an eighth grade student at Waynesville Middle School, has been named the Waynesville Middle School Rotary Club Student of the Month. He was recognized during the club’s April 17 meeting.

He is taking higher level courses at WMDS, is a member of NJHS, and serves as an office aide in the main office. Zollman also participated in football and wrestling and is currently a member of the WMDS boys track team.

Zollman is a member of Boys Scouts and serves as the patrol leader. He plans to pursue his Eagle Scout one day. He attends Soldier Memorial Chapel at Ft. Leonard Wood and participates in youth group, worship and volunteers with the younger kids at church. Next year, he plans to be a member of the WCC JROTC Raiders, wrestling team, track team and the new swimming team. Ulissa Pickett, a Waynesville High School freshman, has been named the WHS April Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Pulaski County. She was recognized during the club’s April 17 meeting.

The character word for April was accountability and Matt Johnson, a WHS social studies teacher, wrote this about Pickett, “Ulissa is the model of accountability in my class. She exemplifies the model of sustained success. Ulissa works extremely hard in class and if she ever misses class is faithful to figure out what she missed and what she needs to do to get caught up. She is quiet in class, but is always paying attention and holds herself accountable for her grades. She always takes time to make corrections to her work and is the most faithful student I have at pushing herself to do her absolute best, no matter how big or small the assignment or task is. Ulissa operates on a system of sustained quiet excellence. This could be very easy to take for granted or to overlook, but I appreciate her constant hard work and dedication to always doing her best. She is going to do big things in life!”

  • On April 30, the Waynesville tennis team won for their senior night, taking Willow Springs, 8-1 – an improvement over their 6-3 win earlier in the season.

The seniors honored were Cameron Martell, Matthew Meyer, David Sneed and managers Chloe Trusty and Klementyna Cichocki.

“Dropping fast in #3 doubles, the night was looking a little rocky at the start,” said Kayla Wilson, WHS boys head tennis coach. “But the WHS boys won the next two doubles matches to take the lead moving into singles.”

With a quick match on court 6, Caleb Andrews won over his opponent, 8-1, in the fastest match of the night. In addition, Tyler Gayman and Shawn Berrios both had quick matches, each taking 8-2 victories. Then, celebrating senior night in style, David Sneed dominated his opponent 8-0.

“David is a strong player who has come so far since his freshman year,” Wilson said. “Senior night is a time to reflect on how far they’ve come, and it’s a great coaching moment when you look back and see just how far these guys have come. Sneed picked up the game fast as a freshman, but his game has developed greatly since then. Although his strokes were pretty solid from the beginning, Sneed has worked hard to develop a killer tennis mindset. He is very aggressive, and I’ve really enjoyed watching his playing style change over the years.”

Cameron Martell, a senior, had a close match. “Cameron trailed his opponent by one game the whole

match. Taking a win to tie the match at 8-8, however, Cameron battled in a tiebreaker. Tonight, Cameron pulled out ahead, 9-8 (7-5). Cameron problem solves well and has very reliable shots. Typically, I can trust that he has things under control. He takes multiple AP classes, works part time, and still remains fully devoted to his team. This kid juggles life well, which will bring him a lot of success in his future as well.”

New to tennis this year was senior Matthew Meyer. “Matthew has picked up the sport pretty well,” Wilson said.

“He started coming to some of our winter court days to learn the fundamentals, so he walked in with a little more experience than some of our younger players. He’s done well this season, playing close to the top of our JV lineup. Tonight he took a 6-1 victory in doubles with Tyler Jones.”

The Tigers will compete in District play next week.

The Waynesville Tigers Athletic Booster Club will host a four-person scramble on July 28, 2018, at Piney Valley Golf Course on Fort Leonard Wood.

The cost is $300 for a team or $85 per person. Price includes golf with cart, mulligans, 5 feet of string, lunch, drink tickets and prizes.

  • The Waynesville R-VI School District hosted the 2018 District Volunteer Banquet at the Waynesville Career Center on April 26, 2018. The banquet was held to honor volunteers who contribute their time and efforts toward making our school district a great place for students to learn and grow. More than 2,000 volunteers, managed by the Community Resource Office, served more than 10,000 hours across 11 schools in the district.

In attendance were Paul Shultz II, president of the Waynesville School Board, and School Board members Janet Crider and Charles Quinn; Dr. Brian Henry, superintendent, and assistant superintendents Hilary Bales, Dr. Chris Berger, and Dr. Trish Adkins; Todd Whalen, Community Resource director and Alternative School principal; VISTA volunteer coordinators; school principals; and volunteer points of contact who presented volunteers with certificates of appreciation. Military Partners in Education (PIE) Units were also presented with certificates of appreciation for their continuous efforts to partner with our schools and students.

Expressing his high regard for the service rendered by the district volunteers, Dr. Henry opened the banquet with these remarks, “One of the greatest characteristics of our nation is that of volunteerism. A majority of the people in our community raised their hand and volunteered to defend our great nation as a member of the Armed Services. Numerous individuals in this room volunteer as a member of AmeriCorps or VISTA. This spirit of volunteerism is what helps our country persevere in a time of crisis and natural disaster. Our volunteerism knows no bounds as individuals from across our country respond to other countries when tragedy strikes. While all of these examples of volunteerism are to be held in high esteem, tonight we recognize individuals in this room who volunteer to protect and grow our greatest natural resource, which is, of course, our children.”

Along with district certificates, 21 volunteers received the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA). The PVSA is the premier volunteer awards program, encouraging citizens to live a life of service through presidential gratitude and national recognition.
