Shown here is a proposed amphitheater enclosed by bamboo plantings. Designed to be utilized as a musi-cal venue, the harmonious melodies of nature con-nect throughout the site to reinforce a rhythmic theme and produce a symphonic-landscape masterpiece.

While studying abroad in Costa Rica for the Summer of 2012, my classmates and I were tasked to produce an illustrative Master Plan for the San Luis Botanical Garden lo-cated on UGA’s Campus in Costa Rica. shown [left] is the master plan of the proposed garden, with a close-up of the Medicinal Garden above. We assigned names to spac-es with the idea that naming a particular area would give it more of an ‘identity’.

Pictured (right) is a Planting Plan for the Fran-cisco Residence in Athens, GA. The above perspec-tive is overlay-ed on top of a photograph of the existing site, showing what the garden space could look like from the road. Process drawings display steps for inspiration for the final design.

This rendering was for a design competition a classmate and I en-tered through Fine Gardening Magazine. a plan view of the existing hardscape is featured above with call-outs of proposed plantings.

A perspective of our proposed planting plan is dis-played below a before image of the target residence, showing what it could one day look like and be.

In the Summer of 2012, I enrolled in a Jekyll Island Studio Class which focused on understanding and adapting strat-egies for site-specific designs of a new-ly-revised Master Plan for Jekyll Island.

Two classmates and I were tasked to pro-duce innovatve coneptual design solutions and connect them through an illustrat-ed depiction of our design process. I focused on human interaction with the landscape through various proposed elements, pro-duced perspective drawings, and found a suit-able location for a proposed golf bunker adjacent to the existing practice facilities.

Pictured here is an Infil Housing Project from a property located in Athens, GA. I was given open-range to design private backyard spac-es that connected and transitioned into more open, public spaces. To the right is an elarge-ment of a backyard space (inspired from tradi-tional Japanese “Zen and Paradise” Gardens) with a perspective resting below. It contains miniature plantings, a zen garden surrounded by a pond and a raised planter full of bamboo .

Below is the master plan of both residences, with a jump from an asian-garden theme, to a tropical-inspired, backyard beach-scape. A path from the pool to the front yard is high-lighted on the left, showing a hidden read-ing area screened by small trees and shrubs.

Page 22: Arthur Joseph Depatie III - Design Portfolio

18

Design began by addressing the overall circulation pattern throughout the site, which was modeled after the shape of a native butterfly still found throughout the landscape.

Page 23: Arthur Joseph Depatie III - Design Portfolio

19

This project challenged me to design for a specific amount of residential and com-mercial space while providing sufficient circulation. I was also tasked to con-serve existing green space and vegetation while connecting it throughout the site.

Theses sketches are from Drawing Class-es I took in College. The media used was charcoal onto a multi-use bond paper.

Page 33: Arthur Joseph Depatie III - Design Portfolio

28

Charcoal is used again (on bond pa-per) in these two still life examples.

Shown here are photos of a gar-den lamp I designed and con-structed for one of my first studio classes in Landscape Architecure.

The goal was to create a lamp that had a top-light (to act as a focal point for catching the eye at night) and a bot-tom-light” (which would light up the ground, for one to see where to walk).

A few places I’ve visited are shown here, to include Ho-tel Bougainvillea in San Jose, Costa Rica (top right), San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Italy (top left), Predja-ma Castle in Slovenia (bottom left), and the U.S.S. Ari-zona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (bottom right).
