The intelligent choice for power and energy management

ARTICS Smart Energy, Nidec ASI’s suite for power and energy management was specifically developed for microgrids. It contains sophisticated functions to guarantee the balance between energy production, storage and electricity consumption in isolated electrical grids and can also control the exchange of energy for configurations that operate in parallel with a main electrical grid.

The ARTICS Smart Energy suite consists of four main control systems - Energy Storage, Power Management, Energy Management & Forecasting and Asset Management -which can be used together or installed separately according to need. Nidec ASI also supplies the SCADA, the supervisory system which is customized to give the operator a unified interface for all signals and parameters required to monitor and organize the operations of underlying programs and specific devices integrated on the grid.

The Energy Storage System is a complete and complex platform consisting of hardware and software components designed to convert the electrical power taken from the AC grid into DC for storage in any kind of battery or battery array suitable for energy. The energy flow can be started or reversed at any time to provide the desired amount of power or to supply the grid with a stable source of AC voltage. The Energy Storage System can operate in parallel or in isochronous mode emulating a well regulated synchronous generator without many of the usual limits imposed by a traditional genset.

The Power Management System (PMS) is the core program that performs several automation tasks for real-time control of active and reactive power production and to keep the voltage and frequency of the microgrid stable. Several functions have been implemented to optimize the production from renewables and to take full advantage of the storage system, respecting the available capacity of each generating source to avoid blackouts. Tasks with different priority and cycle time run in parallel to keep the electrical system safe and efficient. Key functions include: black-start, asset recognition, automatic start and stop of gensets as the load varies, scheduling and limitation of the battery charge, safety charge, load shedding and generator shedding when limitation is not enough. The PMS can also perform the synchronization and reconnection to the main grid, regulating the P and Q demand at the point of common coupling. The use of the PMS is compulsory for isolated microgrids.

The Energy Management System (EMS) is a naturally complementary system to the PMS that allows users to maximize profit from grid-connected configurations. It also allows renewable energy sources, like PV generation, to be transformed into stable, predictive generators. The EMS performs the following global calculations:- Forecast of energy profile for the next day.- Optimization of the profile during the day to get higher efficiency.

The EMS functions operate using weather forecasts, real on-site measurements and historical data to refine its internal models and to predict the energy curve. This information is available for export to other systems and is fully compliant with all constraints imposed by local grid operators.

The Asset Management System (AMS)is an important part of ARTICS Smart Energy suite which monitors and supervises the day to day operations of the plant. Basically, it defines a set of activities which enable the microgrid to optimally produce energy by controlling the correct functioning of the equipment.

Open for future growth ARTICS Smart Energy is a fully configurable, open platform that offers maximum flexibility and is particularly suited for rural electrification and off-grid projects because it can be modified over time to accommodate new energy sources or additional loads that may need to be connected to the microgrid. Our user-friendly HMI interface allows for both local and remote monitoring, troubleshooting and diagnostics.

Key Functions• Island mode, grid-tie mode, grid disconnection and synchronization• Active and reactive power balancing both in grid-tie and island mode• Load and generator shedding• Load Prioritization• Batteries and Gensets management• RE optimization • Grid asset identification• SCADA interface

CommunicationsPower meters, drives, BMS and local sensors can be interfaced through Modbus RTU, CANopen or Profibus while for advanced metering different protocols based on Ethernet standard are available, including but not limited to:- Modbus TCP- IEC 61850- IEC 60870-5-104- ProfiNet- EtherCAT
