1.2 Session Objectives

Notes:

Our objectives for this session include identifying collections from which to conduct research, and expanding the possible terms available for searching. We will also learn how to validate sources for research consideration, and create a basic bibliography using APA or MLA. Before completion of research, all written work must be reviewed. We will introduce a tool that helps identify potential faults in your writing.

Notes:

Tools provided in ProQuest Research Companion are designed to assist in conducting effective research. Each tool is introduced in the learning modules at the point where it will be most needed. However, the tools may be accessed at any time from the main menu on the upper right of the screen. The tools include a Search Aid, Source Evaluation Aid, Citation Builder, and a Revision Aid.

1.4 Search Aid

Notes:

In the Search Aid, begin in the main search field searching a term of interest. The search will not immediately yield research content. Instead, additional related terms will be provided below the search field. Clicking on any of the additional terms will place them into the search field, along with the original search term. You may remove any search term that is undesired from the search field by clicking the “X” next to the term.

Once the desired terms are placed into the search field, searches may optionally be run outside of ProQuest Research Companion for content. Optional settings, arranged through your administrator, include buttons to search either Google or Google Scholar, or a desired library catalog. An additional option allows searching through the Summon discovery service, depending upon availability at your institution. A link may also be provided by your administrator that will return the landing page of your institution’s reference database collection, from where you may select a database to search. The Search Aid tool thus provides a way to increase the potential vocabulary of search terms, while also connecting to initial searches for content.

1.5 Source Evaluation Aid -- Website

Notes:

The Source Evaluation Aid provides details about various potential research sources. At the top of the page, you may choose between evaluation for a Website, Periodical, or Book. To use the Website evaluator, select the Website button, then enter the Website address in the open field and search. Information returned will include identification of the domain, along with instruction on common types of domains, the name of the site owner, and brief site description based on available meta tags. If the Website is known as having a unique characteristic, such as a “fake news” or a “hate” site, this will also be indicated, along with source information for the designation.

1.6 Source Evaluation Aid -- Periodical

Notes:

The Periodical Evaluation Aid utilizes data from ProQuest Ulrich’s, a recognized source of bibliographic and publisher information on hundreds of thousands of periodicals, including academic and scholarly journals. Searching for a periodical title or ISSN will return a designation indicating whether the journal is considered a scholarly publication. In addition, details about the publication are provided, including its peer reviewed status and frequency. If the returned result is not the desired title, related titles will be available by clicking the link titled “Alternatives.”

1.7 Source Evaluation Aid -- Book

Notes:

The Book evaluator allows for search by title or ISBN. It additionally allows an author name to be added to the search. Data is derived from ProQuest Bowker, the leading provider of bibliographic information and management solutions in support of publishers, authors, and booksellers. Scholarly designations for books are based upon the publisher’s history of producing other scholarly resources. As with the Periodical evaluator, if the incorrect book is returned from the search, a list of alternatives are provided for browsing.

Notes:

The Citation Builder tool provides basic formatted citations in either MLA or APA style. Citations may be customized for Journals, Magazines, Newspapers, or Books. For Journals, Magazines, and Newspapers, the title or Website address of an article may be searched for the correct bibliographic data. For Books, the title or ISBN may be searched. With the desired source type selected and search field data entered, click “Display Correct Fields.”

1.9 Citation Builder

Notes:

Data searched against ProQuest records will fill the available citation fields. If fields are left empty, the information may either be manually entered or left blank. Click the button to access the generated citation.

The Revision Aid tool is designed to help improve the quality of your written work by identifying common writing errors. It will look for passive construction, sentences which may be too long, misused words, and phrases that cover common grammatical or research errors. You may place the draft of your paper in the open field and begin the review by clicking the Review button.

1.12 Revision Aid

Notes:

Once the review has completed, your written work will be marked indicating the errors, and a key will be provided identifying the different marks in your writing. You may use these to edit your work. You may revise as often as needed until you are satisfied with the quality of your written work.
