Artists inSchools

Watch the delight on your students’ faces as they learn new skills in drama, music, visual arts, and creative writing. We have an AIS directory of over 20 professional dancers, musicians, artists, actors, and writers who love to teach children and youth in their art form. Let one of our talented and skilled teaching artists transform your students “and curriculum by bringing the magic of the arts into your classroom.

What schools can participate?Any public or private school in our service area can host an artist. Arts Central serves !ve counties: Deschutes, Je"erson, Crook, Lake, and Klamath. Approximately 5000 students participated in our residency program in the 2010-2011 school year.

Visit artscentraloregon.org/ArtistResidency-Artforms.php for a residency application.

artscentraloregon.org/ais.php

There are several ways our teaching artists can bring the arts too your school, from performances and lectures to hands-on arts projects. Schools may combine two or more residencies for a richer program. Arts Central sta" and teaching artists can create a speci!c plan before each residency or presentation.

1. Arts Enrichment and/or speci!c art skill-building for its own sake. Students experience visual or performing art elements and principles and use them to create artwork and presentations.

2. Arts linked to speci!c classroom learning objectives. Teachers and artists plan how content knowledge (such as science cycles), speci!c language skills (such as re-telling or writing) or science skills (such as measuring) can inspire artistic expression.

3. A “Meet the Artist” lecture-demonstration. (Usually one hour for 1-3 classes at a time). Where do artists and performers get ideas? How do they prepare, and how do they create? Includes artist demonstrations and may include media such as slides, art samples, and career information you can print out for your students.

4. An assembly performance in theater, dance, or music.

5. A family art night. An artist leads families in hands-on fun and learning, or may perform dance, music, or theater work for families.

6. A custom-designed project for a class or larger group.

7. Curriculum development and alignment of art standards with content standards.

8. Sta" and/or parent leader in-service. Call for information about program varieties, objective focus, and/or preferred presenters.

9. An art installation or media production for a classroom, school, or community site. Permanent or semi-permanent, with or without student art involvement. Examples: garden, entrance or courtyard sculpture, murals, DVD or other semi-permanent media (book, !lm/video creation or documentation, etc.).

10. Contemporary and historical art and culture presentations with slides, visuals, and original works. For elementary classrooms and secondary art, humanities, and social science classes.

Collaboration

Cultural BywaysArts Central convened the four regional Cultural Coalitions of the Oregon Cultural Trust from Crook, Deschutes, Je"erson counties and Warm Springs to create Cultural Byways, a cultural tourism project with COVA and Scenic Byways. Cultural Byways connects Central Oregon visitors with arts organizations and events, and positions the region as a cultural destination.

The Roots of Whychus CreekPartnering with the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council, Art Station instructor Kyla Schoessler worked with 100 Sisters Middle School students to bring science to life with art. Students conducted research about the Whychus Creek Watershed vegetation and learned the importance of conservation. Then, based on their observations, they created botanical sketches that were compiled in a beautiful !eld guide.

Poetry to PotteryThis two-part class starts at Nature of Words and ends at Art Station. Guided by Nature of Words writers, students compose a poem, verse or short story. Then, working in the Art Station clay studio, they use individual letter stamps to transfer their written creations onto wet clay platters that are bisque-!red and then glazed for a !nal !ring. The end result is a unique piece that beautifully represents two very di"erent forms of creativity.

The Art of

Ben Westlund Memorial AwardWhen former Central Oregon legislator and State Treasurer Ben Westlund passed away, the arts lost a great advocate. To honor his legacy of supporting the work of other local arts advocates, The Deschutes County Cultural Coalition and Arts Central’s Cate O’Hagan created a memorial award in Westlund’s name. Brad Tisdel, program director and co-founder of The Americana Project, is the !rst recipient of the award. Tisdel received $1,000, funded through the Oregon Cultural Trust, to donate to the arts non-pro!t of his choice.

Arts & Culture AllianceThe best way to create a thriving cultural community is to come together and work toward that common goal. By forming the Arts and Culture Alliance, Arts Central has gathered 34 (and counting!) local non-pro!t and for-pro!t organizations committed to enhancing and expanding the region’s arts and culture through focused collaboration, advocacy and outreach. As its founding organization, Arts Central is pleased to serve as the ACA’s !scal sponsor, convener and administrator, and we look forward to increasing the reach and in#uence of this important alliance.

At Arts Central, one of our primary goals is to support and advocate for the many outstanding arts organizations throughout the region. Working together strengthens each part of the whole and we are honored to have had a part in several collaborative e!orts this year, all for the benefit of those who call Central Oregon home.

Students create a poetry platter in a class jointly o!ered by Art Station and Nature of Words.

On September 30, nearly 250 guests gathered at the Riverhouse Hotel & Convention Center for Arts Central’s 12th Annual Black & White fundraiser. The artistically elegant evening featured the stunning works of numerous regional artists, décor from Art Station students, a little friendly bidding competition and a big celebration of the arts in Central Oregon. And, thanks to generous bidders, donors and sponsors, we were able to raise an astounding $95,000…a record for this event! All proceeds from the Black & White go directly toward strengthening Arts Central’s programs and supporting its mission to provide arts education to all in the region. The Arts Central board and sta" extend a truly heartfelt thanks to this year’s guests, donors, sponsors, committee members and volunteers. Your support and participation made the event a tremendous success!

Remember back when you were in high school, middle school or even elementary school? Remember being excited to go to art class? We could use our imagination, play with clay and paint, make animals out of paper maché, and build things. We didn’t realize that while we were doing what seemed just fun, we were actually learning math, science and brightening our minds to the world around us.

With art and art-related classes being dropped due to budget cuts, Arts Central’s mission is to !ll that void by working with school districts to expand our Artists in Schools programs. Thanks to support from donors like you, we have over 20 professional art instructors who work with teachers in three counties to integrate art into their curriculum. These programs reach over 8,000 students each year. Our Artists in Schools program is just one of the services we provide. VanGo, our brightly colored Honda Element, travels around Deschutes, Je"erson and Crook counties reaching out to underserved communities and youth at risk so they can reap the bene!ts of arts education. For example, this spring VanGo partnered with The Upper Deschutes Watershed Council. Over 100 Sisters Middle School students explored Whychus Creek and helped to create a !eld guide about the watershed. They drew botanical sketches and conducted research about the vegetation of the Whychus Creek Watershed. The !eld guide is a beautiful example of art bringing science to life.In 2011, at the Art Station, we also launched the Children’s Art Academy. The Academy was formed for students who want to more deeply engage their artistic talent and creative skills. We also o"er a scholarship program for those families who are not able to purchase classes. Most recently, Nike Global Design partnered with Arts Central to paint the inside of the Old Mill pedestrian tunnels. We rounded up some of our students and children from Boys and Girls Club. They spent a day painting with top Nike design artists. It’s an experience the kids will never forget and their creation is something the community will enjoy for years to come.To continue our work, we need your help. Your year-end support of $50, $75 or $100 will help us continue to provide arts education and advocacy in our community. We thank you in advance for your generosity.Sincerely,

Cate O’Hagan Paula JohansonExecutive Director Board Chair

P.S. We invite you to visit www.artscentraloregon.com and take a moment to watch our new video. It takes you directly into classrooms and illustrates how our programs enrich our children and grandchildren.
