Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation

¡VIVA ARTS! ENJOYS ANOTHER SUCCESSOctober 30th brought together many members of the business, civic and art communies to watch performances by young Civic Arts Education students and help raise funds for scholarships and other program related needs. The Friends of Civic Arts Education would like to extend sincere appreciation to all the businesses and individuals who donated items for the silent and live auction, which helped us raise over $22,000.

Emcee for the evening was Gary Pokorny, retiring City Manager of Walnut Creek. A member of the City staff in Walnut Creek for over ten years now, Gary says he has watched the Civic Arts Education Program grow and prosper and is particularly pleased with the growing strength of the Friends of Civic Arts Education. It is an effort of love and support for the young persons who will be our next generation of musicians, dancers, and artists. Gary grew up on a family farm in Nebraska where, he tells us, he learned early on the values of hard work and self discipline. As a youth, he enjoyed music and drama, though his efforts at playing the accordion (under the tutelage of an uncle) and drama, in high school and college student productions, convinced him that a career in the performing arts was not his métier! Gary is pleased to play a part in making the 2010 Viva Arts event a rousing success and the Friends Foundation thanks him for his generous support.

The Foundation would also like to thank all the Civic Arts Education student performers: The Leadership Ensemble of DRYO (Diablo Regional Youth Orchestra), under the direction of Rem Djemilev; the Saxophone Ensemble, a musical group giving students, ages 13 to 17, an opportunity to play and perform challenging chamber music from Bach to bebop, directed by Kevin J. Stewart; the CAE Dance Academy, an intensive student program designed for students who have previous dance training and want to pursue professional ballet training, under the artistic direction of Lauren Jonas; and the Youth Theatre Company, Musical Theatre, produced by Rachel Pergamit and directed by Nina Meehan, a performing group in the stepping-stone drama program for children, 5 to18 years of age. We would also like to thank Lee Goldin and all those involved in the making of the video presentation: Make Your Mark: A Visual Art and Design Program for Teens. With support from Viva Arts, the Friends Foundation provided four scholarships last year for students to attend this yearlong program under the supervision of Doug Rowe.

In kind contributors include Wilma Lott Catering, J & J Event Design, Chairs for Affairs, The Home Depot, Orchard Supply Hardware and the City of Walnut Creek. A major fi nancial supporter for the event was the Coit Financial Group whom we wish to extend an appreciative thanks.

Finally, the Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation would thanks its many volunteers who helped make this event a success, including: Mary Leigh Miller, President, Friends of CAE Foundation, Kathy Nelson, Program Manager, CAE, Elaine Burman, Administrative Asst, and board and committee members, June Bowen, Robin Rangel, Karen Cassano, John Ricca, Phyllis Ceaser, Doug Rowe, Paula Evangelou, Nan Siegel, Natalie Inouye, Gretchen Smith, Diane Longshore, Holly Starr-Cvetich, Patricia Pava, Rene Steinpress and Cynthia White.

One of the many highlights of ¡Viva Arts! this year was the outstanding food service by Wilma Lott Catering and Party Rentals, our fundraising event’s exclusive food purveyors. The Asian tasting menu, cooked on site, was a perfect fi t with Viva’s red, purple and black décor, spiced with Chinese paper lanterns and white streamers.

Wilma Lott Catering and Party Rentals, located in Martinez, has been a family owned business for over 40 years, providing custom catering for corporate and individual events throughout the East Bay. The company is also committed to serving the community by working with fundraising and nonprofi t activities to provide culinary treats.

The current owner is Wilma’s son, Robert Lott, who took over running the business seven years ago. He is dedicated to excellent food quality, preparation, presentation, and service staff; catering functions both small & large. His team

will create and custom design seasonal or themed menus to fi t any event or budget needs.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CIVIC ARTS EDUCATION?The City’s Civic Arts Education (CAE) program is a long standing, widely regarded asset to Walnut Creek and the surrounding regional communities. It is the oldest and largest premier quality community arts education provider in Northern California. It serves over 17,000 area residents with more than 140 core arts classes each quarter, plus many special youth programs in schools, community centers and other locations throughout the county supported by grants and service contracts. The Mission is to create engaging Arts opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds that instruct, inspire and ignite. Its mission is grounded in a belief that Arts learning is integral to human development and continual personal growth. The Vision is to build an artistically enriching and creative community through premier and innovative Arts Education.

WHY DONATE TO THE FRIENDS OF CIVIC ARTS EDUCATION?Serious challenges continue to face art students who want to enjoy the camaraderie and quality of Civic Arts Education classes and programs. In these economically stressful times, many students are even more dependent on scholarships. You can help by supporting the Friends, an independent, not-for-profi t (501c3) foundation that hopes to address these challenges by promoting advocacy and building a fundraising base to ensure the success of CAE’s mission. Log on to www.friendsartsed.org to provide your support.

Friends Celebrate Fifth AnniversaryA friend is someone you can count on to applaud your victories and help out when you’re in need. That defi nition certainly holds true for the Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation.

fi ve years ago, the Friends have helped CAE in so many ways. They have provided fi nancial support to the Youth Theater Company to travel to the various theatrical competitions the award-winning company has attended. They have provided fi nancial help to the Dance Academy for its popular Nutcracker production and equipment for CAE’s textile program. The volunteer organization matchedfunding from the California Arts Council with an additional $10,000 to help fund ArtReach, CAE’s program that brought arts to the Mt. Diablo Unifi ed School District.

However, perhaps the most important thing that the Friends have accomplished involves scholarships for deserving students to attend CAE fi rst year (2006-07), the Friends offered 34 scholarships, but last year, they were able to increase that number to 125 for a total of

nearly 300 scholarships over the past fi ve years.

Although the Friends Foundation provides scholarships across the board, age-wise (see the 2010 spring quarter issue’s article on ceramic enthusiast, 91 year old Evelyn Karim) most fi nancial assistance goes to young children or teens. Rosie Sachtschale, an enthusiastic participant in her second year of Make Your Mark, has grown up surrounded by art, her mother Ellen having been a long time ceramics teacher with Civic Arts. Rosie took up fi ber arts at age 8. Now 15 and a high school sophomore, she is eagerly exploring different art forms. Rosie has found a niche creating functional items from recycled materials. Make Your Mark is an eight-month course that selects teens serious about art to engage in different art media with professional artists. “I think it’s pretty important for kids to learn different art forms. I wouldn’t be able to do it without the scholarship.”

Happy 5th Birthday to CAE’s very special Friends!

Skating for Scholarships!Enjoy a day at Walnut Creek on Ice and help the Foundation raise scholarship funds at the same time! For ice skaters hitting the ice on Thursday, January 13th between 1:00 and 9:00 p.m. a portion of your ticket will be donated to the Foundation so kids with fi nancial need can enjoy dancing, working in clay, painting, being a thespian or spending their summer engaged in an arts program such as the new Arts, Adventures, Academics summer program.

For the past fi ve years of its existence, the Foundation has provided, along with other scholarships, about 20 needs based scholarships for children identifed by schools. These kids enjoy the popular 5- week Arts, Adventures, Academics (AAA) summer program. The Recreation department provides before and after camper childcare as needed. In AAA, kids entering K-4 enjoy a variety of arts activities and selected electives while grade 5-9 preteens pick from activities such as cooking, glass, ceramics, digital arts and TV production! Instead of spending the summer watching tv, kids enjoy an exciting, healthy and fun fi lled time of art, music, dance, drama, swimming, outdoor play and camaraderie.

One of Tricia’s interesting tapestry pieces, “Stamps” is shown here. It is 38” x 49” and is of wool, silk and cotton. Tricia says the writing on the stamps is a haiku by the 17th century poet Bassho and is translated as “Gathering spring rain, Mogami River, Rushes”. Heather Farm and Civic Park Preschools are now a part of Civic Arts Education programming. For more detailed information about each of the programs you can contact either Julie Padilla at 943-5858 or Carol Chiavetta at 943-5842 during work hours.
