today’s birthdayby Miles X. Logan

It’s hard to believe Winona Laura Horowitz played Spock’s mother in Star Trek, but the actress, now, 43 has been in the public eye for a long time – since she was 15.

Horowitz grew up on a commune in California, and was an avid fan of J.D. Salinger. She decided to try out for a part in Franny and Zooey, a film being made from a Salinger novel. She didn’t get the role, but she got the attention of writer/director David Seltzer, who cast her in a film he was making, Lucas, in 1986. She changed her name on a lark and it stuck.

Ryder was a naturally gifted actress. Director Tim Burton decided to

cast Ryder in his film Beetlejuice and it made her a star, though still only 17. Ryder was white hot. Every hot director wanted her, but she chose the

offbeat Edward Scissorhands alongside Johnny Depp. The pair clicked onscreen and off and became an item in the tabloids. She earned a Golden Globe for her performance in Mermaids and followed that effort with another hit, Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

In 1994 Ryder took her acting career to the next level, winning rave reviews for her role in Little Women and garnering an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Ironically, Ryder became the butt of many a late night show joke after getting arrested for shoplifting in Beverley Hills. It was not a matter to be taken lightly – she was charged with four felonies.

Determined to fight the charges, Ryder hired a team of top attorneys and went to trial. There was damaging testimony about her drug use and she was convicted on three counts, sentenced to three years probation, and ordered to pay restitution.

Ryder rebounded. Her role in Star Trek won her rave reviews, and in 2010 she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the multiple Oscar winner Black Swan.

Dear White People (R) * Fresh off rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, young writer/director

Justin Simien’s film hits the theaters with a bang. Funny and sassy, it’s about a group of African-American students trying to figure out life at a predominantly white college campus. After pandering films like The Butler and 12 Years A Slave it’s a pleasure to see a black movie that doesn’t take itself seriously. A tremendous cast led by Tyler James Williams glides through Simien’s screenplay as if it were unscripted, yet the wit endears and the message is palpable but never ponderous. Don’t miss it.

John Wick (R) Think a film about a hit man out for revenge has been done a thousand times? True enough, but never with Keanu Reeves in the title role. He takes this “assassin genre” flick up another notch. Ian McShane co-stars.

Birdman * (R) If you paid top dollar to see this at the HIFF, the joke is on you—it’s playing everywhere in the country for half the price. Michael Keaton is getting heavy buzz for his performance as a washed up actor who once played a superhero. The director Alejandro González Iñárritu is a master of pacing, and Edward Norton turns in a spectacular supporting performance. This film is a serious contender for the Best Picture statue and both men should be on the short list come Oscar time.

12 Years Experience

The bi-annual and award-winning Long Island Restaurant Week kicks off its Fall 2014 campaign on Sunday for eight days ending on Sunday, November 9. Participating restaurants will offer a three-course prix fixe for $27.95 all night, every night they are open except Saturday when the menu may only be offered until 7 PM.

Restaurants – spanning Long Island’s 118 miles – are signing up daily to participate. Each will serve its own unique $27.95 menu with a minimum choice of three appetizers, three entrées and three desserts. A full participant list will be available at www.longislandrestaurantweek.com.

Long Island Restaurant Week is a win-win for participants and consumers. Much of the island’s population is provided the opportunity to save money while dining and sample restaurants they might not otherwise try. For restaurateurs, this media-able, value-pricing event delivers a surge in business, a return on investment and community goodwill with the chance to win over new and returning patrons with a positive dining experience.

“It is expected that the campaign this fall will garner more than

Long Island Restaurant Week Kicks Off Sunday200 participants,” said Steve Haweeli, President of Long Island Restaurant & Marketing Hospitality Group – the new business-to-consumer promotions division of WordHampton Public Relations.

“With more than 2.8 million residents and 1000 restaurants with varied cuisines, concepts and price points, it is no wonder why we started the highly anticipated Long Island Restaurant Week which continues to flourish.”

Long Island Restaurant Week was designed to garner positive publicity and additional business during a traditionally sluggish period. Due to popular customer and restaurateur demand, the spring edition of this popular island-wide autumn promotion was launched in 2011 with a 168 participant roster.

Long Island Restaurant Week also believes in the importance of helping neighbors facing hunger and will make a donation following the campaign to select Long Island based charities.

Restaurateurs may sign up online to participate. To view the current list of participants or for more information, visit www.longislandrestaurantweek.com.
