SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER

Frankie and Jonny in the Clair de Lune

2012 is an exciting year for The Theatre and its audiences, as it returns to producing its own headline theatre performances for the first time in over five years. In addition to the pantomime, which this year is a lavish production of Cinderella set in the canals and piazzas of Venice, The Theatre will be creating new professional productions of modern classic plays, rehearsed, designed and performed right here in Oxfordshire.

The season of home grown work begins with the bittersweet romantic comedy Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, from American playwright Terrence McNally, writer of Kiss of The Spider Woman, Ragtime and winner of four Tony Awards and an Emmy. Made famous in a film adaptation starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer, Frankie and Johnny is the story of two very real people, struggling to make their way through all of the one hundred and one reasons why people never fall in love.

Set on a single night in a small New York apartment, it follows waitress Frankie as she comes to the end of her first date with short-order chef Johnny, a compulsive talker and hopeless romantic. Gritty, hilarious, sensual and with some of the best dialogue ever written for the American stage, it’s a modern classic that will captivate anyone who has ever been in love. It will be followed in the spring by a production of Tennessee William’s stirring classic, The Glass Menagerie.

So why not make the journey to one of Oxfordshire’s hidden gems and find out what all the fuss is about!

Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune plays at The Theatre Chipping Norton 19th – 29th September.

Box office: 01608 642350 www.chippingnortontheatre.com

Long beloved for its nationally renowned panto, The Theatre Chipping Norton is a unique cultural outpost in the north of Oxfordshire. Its historic 200 seater auditorium and varied programme of theatre, comedy, music and cinema attract an audience of almost 50,000 a year, and it beat strong competition to pick up the 2012 Oxfordshire Business Award for Cultural Events and Tourism.

Whether at our Piano and String Series, M@SH concerts, Lunchtime Recitals, or our Family and Education Programme, we hope there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Vivaldi: Gloria Jean-Philippe Rameau: Anacreon (1754)Two Baroque gems performed by OAE will be for many the event of the season. In the long awaited concert, Vivaldi’s great Gloria is followed by the modern premiere of Rameau’s Anacreon, a light-hearted opera written for the court of Louis XV. Reconstructed by Oxford conductor Jonathan Williams from manuscripts scattered throughout Paris libraries, Anacreon (1754) receives tonight its first complete performance in over 250 years. On the surface it’s a charming tale of young love but hidden beneath the love-triangle plot lie subversive messages that Dan Brown would be proud of… what can it all mean? And will love prevail?

Helen and Douglas House

July 2012 – January 2014

Composer and performer Nathaniel Robin Mann began his eighteen-month artist residency with Pitt Rivers Museum and OCM in mid-July. His residency is part of Sound and Music’s Embedded project, which partners musicians with organisations who can support and develop their creative practice, forging new and exciting relationships.

Nathaniel is an artist, performer, composer and sound designer. Performing solo as Animateddog and as one third of Dead Rat Orchestra, he draws strongly on folk idioms whilst using unusual objects (including 2x4, ukulele, guitar, phonofiddle and meat cleaver!) and conventional instruments to create unique and playfully experimental music.

Nathaniel is exploring the Museum’s rich collections with access to archives that are not on public display. He will draw inspiration both from the extraordinary objects, as well as the museum’s little-known sound archive, which includes extensive field recordings by Louis Sarno of the BayAka communities from the rainforests of the Central African Republic.

Nathaniel plans to create new work and performances throughout the next eighteen months. Details will be posted on the OCM website www.ocmevents.org and the Pitt Rivers Museum website http://www.prm.ox.ac.uk with more in-depth updates posted on Reel to Real http://pittrivers-sound.blogspot.co.uk/, the Pitt River’s blog dedicated to its sound collections.

Oxford Contemporary Music presents:Chorus: Ray LeeCastle Gardens, Oxford Castle Quarter Gardens

From 5.00pm (also on 24 November)

Towering above the audience a series of giant metal tripods support rotating arms. At the end of each arm loudspeakers emit precisely tuned musical pitches creating a pulsating, harmonic drone, singing out a hypnotic siren call to all those present. Red lights at the end of the arms create the effect of a whirling swarm of fireflies, or of planets in motion, like mesmerising orbits of colour. These intersecting lights trace rings above the heads of the audience, while the combined chorus of the spinning speakers creates a cohesive harmonious whole, ‘a sticky flux’, that is both uplifting and transfixing.

Chorus is a monumental and impressive installation of kinetic sound sculptures by the creator of the internationally successful ‘Siren’, an indoor work that has toured three continents, and enraptured audiences from Amsterdam to Auckland and from Melbourne to Minneapolis.

Exhibition Christmas at the Bodleian17 November – 21 December

Venue > Bodleian LibraryTickets > FreeInfo > www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk

As part of the city-wide celebrations which mark the arrival of the Christmas season, the Bodleian Library is putting on public display a selection of printed broadside ballads from its collections.

The Bodleian Library holds the largest and most significant collections of early printed broadside ballads, most printed between the 16th and 19th centuries. Broadside ballads are cheaply-printed, illustrated song-sheets dating from the earliest days of print which conveyed news, prophecies, histories, moral advice, religious warnings, political arguments, satire, comedy, and bawdy tales. Broadside ballads were sold in large numbers on street-corners, in town squares, and at fairs by travelling ballad-singers and posted on the walls of alehouses and other public places: they were sung, read, and viewed with pleasure by a wide audience, but have survived only in relatively small numbers.

MusicOxford Bach Choir: Carol Concert 14 December 2012, 7.30pm

Venue > Sheldonian Theatre Tickets > £10 - £30 Info > www.oxfordbachchoir.org

The Oxford Bach Choir will be joined by the Oxfordshire Young Singers for their annual Christmas concert under the baton of Timothy Byram-Wigfield. The main work will be Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols: a work for baritone, chorus, strings and organ, chosen because this year sees the 100th anniversary of its first performance at the 1912 Three Choirs Festival at Hereford Cathedral.

It is based on English folk carols which were collected in southern England by Vaughan Williams and his friend Cecil Sharp a few years earlier. The concert will also include traditional carols for audience participation.

Music at Oxford is proud to offer Oxford’s perennial favourite Christmas event. This celebration of words and music offers the essential flavour of Christmas without being a service. Readings and carols, humour and the warmth of the very best of Christmas writing will get you into the Christmas spirit.

Last year’s reader was Jeremy Irons. In recent years we’ve been joined by Robert Hardy, Jean Marsh and others, who will we have for you this year? We can’t tell you yet but we’re sure they’ll offer you a suitably wizard experience for Christmas at Christ Church.
