Discovery Arts Fest - 2 -

Welcome to Discovery Arts Fest 2014! The week’s activities will allow every member of our community to experience the transformative power of the Arts. I am excited to be a part of this extravaganza, one which sets Discovery College apart as a school which thrives on creativity and innovation.

Though this year’s festival is my own ‘baptism of fire’, Arts Fest is now a well-loved and anticipated fixture on the College’s calendar. Students can look forward to favourites, such as the Stage Fighting workshops with Faust International Youth Theatre and Graffiti Art with acclaimed contemporary artist Ceet Fouad, and exciting new elements joining the festival.

Fresh from Professional Development sessions with our teachers, this year’s Artist In Residence Kalani Das will share his percussion expertise in much anticipated workshops with both Primary and Secondary students. Our Year 10-12 students are spoiled for choice with this year’s Senior Student Elective Programme. The experiences on offer range from Art Galleries and Architecture to Theatre and Stop Motion, to Skateboarding and Parkour, App Building, Costume Design and more. Students can make choices based on their curriculum needs and personal interests.

We throw our arms open to the entire Discovery Bay and Hong Kong community with an exciting line-up of shows including Chris Brien in Concert with Tribe, Puppet Tales, Andrew the Brilliant Balloon Man and the College’s Annual Concert. The Arts Fest Fair returns on Friday this year, a bounteous showcase of talents, products and performances.

It is the huge support of the DC PTA, the open heart of our artists, the work of passionate volunteers, community sponsorship, flexible teaching and support staff and eager students that make Arts Fest such a success. Thank you again to all who have helped. Do enjoy!

The Discovery College Parent Teachers Association is delighted to once again fund and support Discovery

Arts Fest. This exciting celebration of the Arts continues to grow and develop each year, offering our students unique insights and experiences led by renowned local and international artists and educators. This year students will enjoy a range of workshops, including graffiti art, capoeira, stage fighting, Chinese watercolour painting, dragon dancing, modern dance, percussion and more. Upper Secondary students will choose from the most diverse range of electives we have ever offered including visits to the HKAPA, HSBC archives and the Disney dubbing studios and architecture, app building and costume design.

Discovery College families and the wider DB community will have the opportunity to enjoy many aspects of Arts Fest including the DC Annual Concert, Arts Fest Parade and Artwork Exhibitions which showcase the outstanding talent of our students. We

also look forward to your support of our public events - ‘Puppet Tales’ and ‘Andrew the Brilliant Balloon Man’ for our younger students, Chris Brien and Tribe in concert, a Stand-Up Comedy Night for teens and adults and our Arts Fair, now in its second year. The ‘DC Arts Fair’ enables artists and students from our local community to exhibit and sell their original work and will be held at the College from 5-8pm on Friday 28 February. The Arts Fair will also feature performances from the Secondary Choir, professional lion dancing and a dragon dance by our Year 6 students.

Discovery Arts Fest would not be possible without the amazing support and involvement of so many parents, staff and students. Thank you to those parents and businesses who contributed as Patrons of Arts Fest 2014 and to our Arts Fest Director - Dionne Lashley (DC Music and Drama Teacher). This year, I would

like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of PTA members Elspeth Shaw and Koren Thomas who have led Arts Fest since its inception six years ago. Koren and Elspeth have worked tirelessly over the years, donating their time, effort and expertise and deserve the highest recognition for their efforts. We hope you enjoy the 2014 Discovery Arts Fest.

There will be fun, laughter and magical mayhem when Ben Matthews – “Big Ben“ – entertains Year 1s. Big Ben began his antics as a juggler and unicyclist at Oxford University and has added to his mad-capped repertoire over the years to include all things funny. He has performed his one-man circus and variety show around the world and entertains all ages – from children at school shows, to adults at corporate dinners, and from international arts festivals to private birthday parties.

Capoeira (pronounced cap-oh-air-ah) is a high-energy, artistic combination of martial arts and dance. Thought to have originated within the slave culture in Brazil in the 16th Century, Capoeira is renowned for its fast flying kicks, bobbing and weaving techniques and acrobatic cart wheels and back flips, all performed to a Brazilian drum beat. Year 2 students will workshop with Hong Kong Capoeira, blending dancing, music, acrobatics and self defense.

Year 3s will explore the rich art of Chinese watercolour painting this Arts Fest. Chinese watercolour painting is one of the world’s oldest continuing artistic traditions, dating back to early imperial China around 200BC. Using subtle colours and an economy of strokes, it conveys messages in its uniquely Chinese style. Students, mentored by Yuk Lin Judyanna Li, will focus on nature and landscapes, complementing Year 3’s current Unit of Inquiry into How We Express Ourselves, with a focus on nature. Teams of directors from Year 13 and actors from Year 12 will create an original piece of theatre in 24 hours. Directors are tasked with using skills and techniques from a particular theatre practitioner of their choosing. During the 24 hours, spread across three days, directors and actors work together to research, brainstorm, create, produce and realise an original performance.

Underpinning their production in a social, political or historical context, our DP Theatre students are literally turning a blank canvas into a realised piece of theatre. The final performances will run in the Black Box Theatre from 4.15pm on Monday, 24 February. These performances are suitable for students in Year 10 or above.

The Year 12 Diploma students open up the Diploma art studio on DC’s 5th floor to showcase some of the work they have produced in the first six months of the IB Diploma visual arts course. The IB Diploma visual arts course is a two-year programme of study which culminates in an exhibition of student work.

Onsite insight is an exhibition of site-specific art produced by our Year 11 visual arts students. The exhibition involves over 50 students who have produced exciting contemporary artworks specifically for different sites around the school campus. Visit the school campus during Arts Fest and discover the innovative artworks that students have created, enriching our school with colour and commenting on perti-nent issues in our school community.

Secondary Visual Arts teacher Fiona Kennedy-Altoft is also a practicing artist, who has won numerous art awards in her native Australia and has exhibited her work internationally. During Arts Fest the College will feature an exhibition of Fiona’s work, which explores aspects of human behaviour that compare to animals, through the use of anthropomorphized hybrids.

Since arriving in Hong Kong Fiona has included more portraiture to her pieces. She includes her birds that are a defining part of her work but now they are more narrative about her migration to Hong Kong. Come and view her paintings, in the theatre alcove, which comment on the multifaceted world of the modern woman; how complex it is and how she deals with her ‘search for joy’.

Internationally renowned Puppet Masters Huang Yi-que and Wong Fai of the Wong Fai Puppet Shadow Company bring to Discovery College a beautiful, fun show to delight our younger students.

Watch as Huang Yi-que breathes life into the “little monkey”. And enjoy how Wong Fai, who inherits the traditional puppet art from Mr Huang, blends human performers with the shadows and puppets as if there is unspoken consensus between them. Programme Cover design by Patrick Hawkey (Year 11)

We would also like to thank Year 11 student Patrick Hawkey for designing this year’s Arts Fest Programme Cover and Posters. “Discovery College seems to have an intense love for the arts. As a new student to Discovery College this year, I was blown away by this and the fact a school has laser cutters! By combining individual elements of the different arts, with a bowl of Hong Kong noodles, I aim to give the viewer a surreal experience with much to explore.” - Patrick Hawkey
