What Schools Can Participate?Any public or private school in our service area can host an artist. Arts Central serves #ve counties: Deschutes, Je$erson, Crook, Lake, and Klamath. 5200 students participated in our residency program in the 2010-2011 school year.

How Can a Residency Enrich Your School? There are several ways our teaching artists can bring the arts to your school, from performances and lectures to hands-on arts projects. Schools may combine two or more residencies for a richer program. Arts Central sta$ and teaching artists can create a speci#c plan before each residency or presentation.

1. Arts enrichment and/or speci"c art skill building for its own sake. Students experience visual or performing art elements and principles and use them to create artwork or presentations.

2. Arts linked to speci"c classroom learning objectives. Teachers and artist plan how content knowledge (such as science cycles), speci#c skills (such as re-telling or writing) or skills (such as measuring) can inspire artistic expression.

3. A “meet the artist” lecture-demonstration (usually one hour for 1-3 classes at a time). Engaging, interactive, but not usually hands-on. Where do artists and performers get ideas?

Artists in SchoolsInvite a painter, African drummer, drama coach, or writer into your classroom! Watch the delight on your students’ faces as they learn new skills in music, drama, visual arts, and creative writing. We have an AIS Artist Directory of 20 professional dancers, musicians, artists, actors and writers who love to teach children and youth their art form. Let one of our talented and skilled teaching artists transform your students and curriculum and bring the magic of the arts into your classroom.

Visit artscentraloregon.org/ArtistResidency_Artforms.php for a residency application.

How do they prepare, and how do they create? Includes artist demonstrations and may include media such as slides, art samples, and career information you can print out for students.

4. An assembly performance in theater, dance or music.

5. A family art night. An artist leads families in hands-on fun and learning, or may perform dance, music or theatre work.

6. A custom-designed project for a class or larger group.

7. Curriculum development and alignment of art standards with other content standards.

8. Sta! and/or parent leader in-service. Call for information on variety, focus and presenters.

9. An art installation or media production for a classroom, school or community site. Permanent or semi-permanent, with or without student art involvement. Examples: garden, entrance or courtyard sculpture, murals, DVD or other semi-permanent media (book, #lm/video creation or documentation, etc).

10. Contemporary and historical art and culture presentations with slides, visuals and/or artifacts and original works. For elementary classrooms and secondary art, humanities, and social science classes. Any requests for time period/theme, culture or artist?

artscentraloregon.org/vanGo.php

Students from Sisters Middle School participated in a Whychus Creek stewardship project with the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council to draw and document native plants with VanGo.

VanGo

What is VanGo? VanGo is a community outreach program that gives children in rural towns with limited access to professional-level arts education the ability to build skills in various art disciplines. VanGo, a colorfully decorated Honda Element, is a mobile art studio complete with art instructor and supplies. With a curriculum and teaching artists that foster a love and appreciation of the arts, students and their families can experience the bene#ts of high quality arts enrichment programs.

For youth at risk, VanGo provides arts programming to help support treatment and education and introduce the joys and bene#ts of self-expression through art. VanGo can assist non-pro#t service agencies and community organizations with strengthening their programs for a stronger support system for youth in our region. To date, VanGo has traveled to 24 sites in three counties, reaching over 1800 underserved children and youth.

Funding Support Brings VanGo to Local KidsThanks to funding from a NEA grant, VanGo will make visits twice-monthly to community partners in Madras, Redmond, and LaPine throughout the 2012-2013 school year!

We are also grateful to Wells Fargo for sponsoring the VanGo program.

For more information on bringing VanGo programming to your community site or organization please contact:

Arts & Culture AllianceGuiding Principles

The alliance is uni#ed under the following guiding principles:

1. Central Oregon’s creative economy and cultural industry is thriving and visible. 2. Central Oregon is known as a cultural destination (regionally, statewide, beyond). 3. The quality of life in our region is higher because of the presence of culture.

Why Are We Doing This?Central Oregon faces some unique challenges. Unlike most communities in the state, there is no funding for arts and culture from our local governments. Additionally, cultural organizations have shrinking budgets, limited resources, and decreasing private sector funding. Nationwide, the answer is collaborations with initiatives being launched to increase the public’s personal interest and investment in culture and to address changing trends in arts and cultural attendance and consumption.

Vision StatementCentral Oregon is a vital, recognized destination to create and experience a diversity of arts and culture. The Arts & Culture Alliance stimulates creative collaborations in sustaining a robust, thriving and visible cultural economy.

PurposeTo enhance the region’s arts and culture, we work with one voice to:1. Elevate community involvement and commitment,2. Attract #nancial support, and 3. Engage businesses and government as advocates.

Currently an alliance of thirty-three non-profit and for-profit cultural organizations.
