ELIO VILLAFRANCA Born in the Pinar del Río province of Western Cuba, Steinway Artist pianist and composer Elio Villafranca was classically trained in percussion and composition at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba. Since his arrival in the U.S. in late 1995, he has been involved in jazz and Latin jazz scenes on both the East and West Coasts. As a sideman, he has collaborated with leading jazz and Latin jazz artists including: Wynton Marsalis, Jon Faddis, Billy Hart, Jane Bunnett, Miguel Zenon, Cecil McBee and others. As a leader, his ensembles have been making music that has fired the imagination of discerning jazz listeners around the world. Elio was nominated at the 2010 Grammy Awards in the Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year category for his performance, composition and coproduction in the album Things I Wanted To Do by Chembo Corniel.www.eliovillafranca.net

JAMES WEIDMAN With the skilled touch of an adept soloist and accompanist, pianist James Weidman came to New York in the 70s and quickly found himself in demand from many of the masters of the day, including Max Roach, Woody Herman, Archie Shepp, James Moody, Greg Osby, Bobby Hutcherson, Slide Hampton, Dakota Staton, Cassandra Wilson, Abbey Lincoln, Joe Lovano and many others. For nearly 40 years, James has constantly toured the world’s major festivals including Montreux, Monterey, Newport, North Sea and JVC Jazz Festivals, and he can be seen throughout New York at Carnegie Hall, Birdland, the Blue Note, the Village Vanguard, Iridium and the Jazz Standard. www.jamesweidman.com

RENEE ROSNES Renee Rosnes is one of the premier pianists and composers of her generation. She has released twelve critically acclaimed recordings which reveal her to be a powerfully creative musician, collaborating with a diverse range of artists, from masters Zakir Hussain, and Jack DeJohnette, to younger giants such as Chris Potter, Christian McBride and Steve Nelson. Shortly after relocating from Vancouver to New York in 1986, she quickly established a reputation as a major talent, touring and recording with such legends as Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, JJ Johnson, James Moody, the SFJAZZ Collective [2004-2009], Bobby Hutcherson and Ron Carter among others. In 2006, she was named SOCAN’s Composer of the Year. Rosnes also frequently performs two piano duets with her husband, acclaimed pianist Bill Charlap. www.reneerosnes.com

ARTURO O’FARRILL Pianist, composer and educator Arturo O’Farrill, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. In 2002, Mr. O’Farrill created the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) due in part to a large and very demanding body of music in the genre of Afro Latin Jazz that deserved to be more widely appreciated. His debut album with the Orchestra, Una Noche Inolvidable, earned a Grammy Award nomination in 2006. In 2007, Mr. O’Farrill established the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance to serve as the institutional home for the Orchestra and their second album, Song for Chico, earned a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2009. In February 2011, Mr. O’Farrill and the ALJO released their third album, 40 Acres and a Burro, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, and this spring they released a fourth album, The Offense of the Drum, (Motéma) which has been nominated for a Latin Grammy. www.afrolatinjazz.org, www.arturoofarrill.com
