control assemblies to indicate that there is a direct alarm connection to the monitoring

    centre (see Clause 8.3).

    (e)  Prior to testing, where an alarm signal is to be transmitted, the monitoring service

Delete the second paragraph and replace with the following:

‘Calculations for the sprinkler system design shall be based on the residual pressure

available to the premises from the source of supply at the required flow. Where the

acceptable source of supply is a town main, the residual pressure shall take into account the

effect of the required flow on the water supply system.

    The residual pressure shall be—

    (a) determined from local water agency modelling confirming that the pressure can be

maintained for 95% of the time; and

    (b) a minimum pressure obtained or calculated from local water agency records adjusted

for the effect of the system demand (excluding the pressures on the 5% of days

    having the lowest pressures); or

    (c) determined by testing the water supply system using a method approved by the water

    supply agency.

    Clause 4.3.1.1

In the first paragraph, delete the words ‘whichever is the lesser’.

    Clause 4.3.1.5 (new)

Add  a new clause as follows:

    4.3.1.5 Shared water supplies

Sprinkler systems under separate ownership shall not share private water supplies, nor shall

they share connections to public water supplies.

Sprinkler system piping (with the exception of water supply connections to town mains)

shall not traverse ground that is not under the control of the owner.

C4.3.1.5  Water supplies, other than those parts under the control of the water supply

authority, should be under the control of the owner of the building containing the

    installation.

Where there is a ring main or loop within the premises it is desirable to provideisolating stop valves, so situated as to maintain the maximum possible service in the

event of fracture or, if it is necessary, to close down part of the ring main.

    Clause 4.3.2.2

     Add  the following commentary:

    C4.3.2.2  Water conservation recommendations

    (f)

To conserve water during periodic run and load testing of pumps drawing from atown main supply, a recirculation tank and associated piping [see

Figure C4.3.2.2(A)], may be provided to permit re-use of water during pump

testing. In use the circulation tank is filled as required, the town main supply is

isolated and test water is recirculated via the tank. On completion of the test run,

the town main supply is restored. Tank capacity and dimensions are selected to

accommodate maximum pump duty flow and to prevent turbulence from tank return

lines. See HB 233,Fire Protection Systems Testing, Water Conservation Handbook .

FIGURE C4.3.2.2(A) TYPICAL RECIRCULATION TANK ARRANGEMENT

    (g)  Where a recirculation tank as in Figure C4.3.2.2(A) above cannot be provided, a

less acceptable means of conserving water during periodic run and partial load

testing of pumps drawing from a town main supply may involve piping for closed

circuit metering. A typical recirculation loop piping arrangement is shown in

Figure C4.3.2.2(B). Means for air release should be provided if air can be trapped

in the loop. Turbulence in the water entering the pump should be avoided to

     prevent cavitation.

     It should be noted that—

    (i) prolonged recirculation can cause heat build-up unless some water iswasted; and

(ii) this arrangement cannot serve as the annual flow test facility (see

    Clause 4.4.)

    (h)   If neither of the foregoing options is practicable, specifying pumpsets

incorporating variable speed pressure limiting control, that is, a speed control

system designed to limit the total discharge head by reducing the pump driver

speed (the speed duty point). This acts to eliminate or reduce the discharge of

water from the pressure relief valve during periodic pump run tests. Requirements

for variable speed control systems are set out in AS 2941.

    (i)

Where discharge of some water is unavoidable, it should be captured and returnedto the sprinkler installation or redirected to another use. This may be accomplished

through the use of temporary on-site recirculating storage tank, grey water

recycling plant where it exists on site, or discharge directly to a tanker for off-site

use in council gardens and the like.

    Clause 4.3.4.1

     Add  the following commentary:

C4.3.4.1  To conserve water at time of tank maintenance, the provision of dual

compartment (sectional) tanks or two half-capacity tanks is strongly recommended.Such a tank arrangement not only permits conservation of half the stored water at time

of tank draining for maintenance (by pumping from one compartment or tank to the

other) but also ensures that at least half the required stored capacity is available

    during tank maintenance.

    Clause 5.3.3

Add  a new Item (j) as follows:

    (j) In the case of partial suspended ceiling panels, full protection is required above and

below the panels. Sprinklers suspended on droppers between ceiling panels shall be

positioned to comply with the requirements of Items (e), (f) and (h) above.

Insert  the following after the first paragraph (including Notes):

‘Where pumps drawing directly from a town main supply are not permitted by the water

supply authority, pump suction tanks may take the form of break tanks the capacity of

which shall be not less than one third of the quantity ( V min) or 30 000 L, whichever is the

greater. Break tanks shall incorporate the following inflow arrangements:

    (a) Inflow shall be via two automatic mechanical float valves and one manually operated

valve, each sized to deliver not less than the maximum system demand (Q max).

    (b) Inflow piping shall incorporate means for flow measurement.

    (c) Unless a lesser dimension is acceptable to the relevant authority, the outlet of anyinflow piping shall be not less than 3.0 m horizontally from suction piping inlets.

    (d) Inflow arrangements shall be accessible for inspection.’
