AS and A Level Design & Technology:
What’s it all about?
Product Design
AssessmentAll A Levels are now linear courses students will sit their exams at the end of the course.
Exam50% exam (maths and science contribute 15%) for both AS and A level with two papers for A level.
NEA (non-exam assessment)50% a single design and make activity for both AS and A level. For AS students will develop a design brief in response to a context set by AQA. For A level students are free to choose their design. 45 hours work.

A mixture of short answer, multiple choice and extended response questions.
Paper 2 2 hours 100 marks
• Designing and making principles

Two sections Section A
Product Analysis 40 marks and up to 6 short answer questions based on visual stimulus of products.
Section B
60 marks two extended response questions

• Materials and their applications • Designing for specific users• Design communication• Digital design and manufacture• Design for manufacturing maintenance and repair• Protecting designs and intellectual property• Enterprise and marketing• Design theory- key design movements- Art Deco, Bauhaus • Impact of influential designers -Dieter Rams/ Dyson/ Ive• Cultural changes and social and moral issues• Responsible design- environmental issues and waste
Design, Creativity and Inspiration
Students present coursework in sketchbooks with A2 or A3
folders to note ideas, plan and develop designs. For students
who are interested in pursuing a career or higher education in design they prove to be useful
resources to take to interviews.

The Opportunity for Independent Learning
We have a fabulous design environment, with full access to a
range of modern resources and equipment. Students will continue to develop transferable life skills
such as creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork, planning and
project management..
Computer Aided Design/ Making
Design and Technology
Students will develop an understanding of Sketchup2D and 3D Design and use
the laser cutter and 3D printer both for rapid prototyping and final
manufacture products.
Understanding design outside the classroom
The Victoria & Albert Museum’s permanent collections of 20th century design and architecture
Thomas Heatherwick: Designing the Extraordinary Materials technology and the contemporary arts collection
at the Science Museum Degree shows at the Arts University College Bournemouth
Design and Technology
We develop an understanding of design in its widest context with visits to museums and contemporary exhibitions such as:
A Future Career in Design?
Our Y13 students go on to study Art Foundation courses and degrees in Product Design, Engineering, Architecture,
Fashion and Textiles, Business Management, Theatre Design and Jewellery Design.
