Messages

MESSAGE FROM THE COUNTRY MANAGER

As the business community in the Philippines and the neighboring ASEAN countries bask under the recent unprecedented growth rates, improved economic climate and continued increase in consumption, there is a recognition of the challenges that it brings along as well. But what it takes to sail over and achieve a steady overall performance across all facets of private sector operations spans forces well beyond their fences and financials.

What has been identified as ‘top 10 risks’ that businesses face are still unmastered. While this is no reason to fret, there is all the more reason to unite, exchange ideas, empower each other and excel in our businesses - the very purpose of the ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Summit.

Through this event we aim to connect a community of sustainability practitioners who will steward not just their companies but the extended community and create truly shared value by mainstreaming sustainability into operations. None of this would have been possible without our sponsors, partners, delegates and our own colleagues. I thank you all for putting this show together. I look forward to seeing you all at the 2014 summit with new challenges, better solutions and more stories to share / learn!

KARTHIK SUBBURAMAN

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMANThe ASEAN region is home to more than 500 million people - a community interconnected amidst diverse cultures and varied businesses by common interest for progress and prosperity. Despite the 'sustainability headwinds' climbing to become a formidable challenge to enterprises, the industry has never been more poised for growth and to embrace the future.

That being said, it is imperative for the private sector to learn from each other, benchmark against the best, strive to lead through the maze of risks by turning them into opportunities to innovate - now more than ever. Inclusiveness, partnerships, sustainable development and value creation while always made sense, has now become the cornerstones for an organization to operate sustainably!

Our job is to create opportunities as well as avenues for the above to translate into reality. The ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Summit is one such attempt. I profusely thank our sponsors, partners, speakers and all of you friends who have made it possible. We truly believe you'll leave this conference with a broader network of practitioners, stronger implementation knowledge and most importantly bright ideas to making your operations more sustainable!

About the Philippines

MAKATI - THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICTThe City of Makati is one of the 16 cities that make up Metro Manila, one of the most popular cities in the world. Makati is the financial center of the Philippines and one of the major financial, commercial and economic hubs in Asia. It is an important center for international affairs. Makati is noted for its highly cosmopolitan culture, also being a major cultural and entertainment hub in Metro Manila.

ABOUT THE PHILIPPINESThe Philippines, officially known as the Republic of the Philippines, is a country in SouthEast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean. The Philippines is composed of 7,107 islands and is categorized broadly into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city Manila lies in the Luzon region of the country. To its north across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan. West across the South China Sea lies Vietnam. It is bounded on the east by the Philippine Sea.

LANGUAGE & CLIMATE

Filipino is commonly used being the national language. English is also widely spoken as second language for commercial and legal translation. Both Filipino and English are used in government, education, print, broadcast media, and business. The city of Makati features a tropical monsoon climate. Its proximity to the equator means that the temperature range is very small, rarely going lower than 20 °C (68 °F) and going higher than 38 °C (100 °F). However, humidity levels are usually very high which makes it feel much warmer. The summer monsoon brings heavy rains to most of the places from May to October, whereas the winter monsoon brings cooler and drier air from December to February. Manila and most of the lowland areas are hot and dusty from March to May.

About the Philippines

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND THE METRO

If you want to travel through Metro Manila using the public transport system, or what is locally referred to as “commuting”, you will find that there are different modes of transportation that you can choose from: tricycles, pedicabs, jeepneys, FXs, LRT, MRT, taxi and buses to name a few. Below are some of our recommended modes of transportation that you can choose from:

• Taxi CabsOne of the best ways to travel around the city is by taxi. Traveling around the city of Makati is not too expensive and there are plenty of taxis that are readily available 24 hours a day once you step out of your hotel. It is important to note that the minimum meter rate for taxis is approximately 40 pesos. It is also advisable to have extra coins and small denomination bills with you, so you can pay the exact fare.

• Jeepneys – a Philippine IconThe exotic jeepney is a post-war creation inspired by the GI jeeps that the American soldiers brought to the country in the 1940s. The basic fare in Metro Manila is PHP8.00 for the first four kilometers, then there is a fixed additional fee for every unit of distance travelled. If you want the total Philippine experience, travelling by jeepney is definitely something that you would want to do!

NIGHTLIFE

Metro Manila is one of the most vibrant cities in Asia and it offers a diverse and exciting nightlife. In fact, every major city in the country has a number of nightlife activity hubs with restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs and karaoke bars, to name a few.

Makati, for instance, is one of the famous venues to hang out at night. Some of the popular venues include Greenbelt, Glorietta, Jupiter Street and J.P. Rizal Street which guarantees a night of fun and entertainment.

Outside the city of Makati, tourists may choose to try the nightlife hubs of Manila in the areas of Malate and in the newly revitalized Roxas Boulevard, also known as the Baywalk area. Quezon City, along Timog, Tomas Morato Avenues and Quezon Boulevard is also a popular destination of locals since the clubs are close to one another making it easy to ‘bar hop’. Quezon City is also popular for the flourishing nightlife in Eastwood city, Libis.

Metro Manila’s nightlife surpasses expectations with its complete lineup of exciting events, quality customer service, inexpensive beverages and sumptuous cuisines.

About the Philippines

THE FILIPINO FEAST – EATING OUT IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines is known for its sumptuous dishes, which are definitely going to make you forget your diet! With culinary influences from the Chinese, Malays, Indians, Mexicans, Americans and the Spanish, it is no wonder that the Filipino flavor has a unique taste – allowing it to stand out from the other Asian countries. Although Filipino dishes are not heavily spiced, they are characterized by a unique combination of different tastes such as salty, sweet and sour flavors.

Having your fill of the delectable Filipino dishes and cuisines will not be difficult because there are a lot of restaurants spread out across the city. These restaurants offer everything from Filipino cuisine to other specialties.

Below are some of the dishes that you should try out during your stay in the Philippines:

Lechon (Spanish word for suckling pig) is also known as spit-roast whole pig. This Filipino dish is popularly served during national festivities, the holiday season and special occasions such as weddings, baptisms and even during family get-togethers. It is usually served with a liver-based sauce.

Adobo (which means “seasoning” or “marinade” in Spanish) is a very popular dish in the Philippines and almost all Filipinos know how to cook it. The dish is cooked in vinegar and soy sauce and can be done with pork, chicken, squid or beef among others. It is a very simple dish to prepare and is a common favorite because it does not spoil easily.

Sinigang consists of meat or seafood with vegetables simmered in sour broth – and we mean sour! It is tamarind based and there are many variations of the dish, mixing it with ingredients such as guava, calamansi, bilimbi or unripe mango.

If you are more of the adventurous type and you can try the more exotic variants of the Filipino cuisine. One of the popular dishes is Balut (featured in Fear Factor), which is also known as fertilized duck embryo that is boiled and eaten in the shell. It is commonly sold as streetfood in the Philippines.

ENTERTAINMENT - SHOPPING MALLS & CINEMAS

Ayala Center, along EDSA and Ayala Avenue is the most known commercial center in the city. It contains two shopping malls, Glorietta and Greenbelt. Along the periphery of Glorietta are three department stores: SM Department Store Makati, Rustan's, and the Landmark.

Across Makati Avenue from Glorietta is Greenbelt. This is one of the most sophisticated, modern, and expensive malls in the country. Greenbelt features dozens of coffee stores and restaurants, all overlooking a well-landscaped green park at the center where a domed Catholic chapel dominates the skyline.

MASTER CLASS

The world is changing – but not in the pace that it had before. The advent of technology has made a plethora of information readily available at a click of a button, redefining the pace by which knowledge is disseminated. This has resulted in the tremendous increase in the amount of basic knowledge that people have about various topics in their professional interest – making it a competitive business arena for professionals!

Despite the large number of professional certification programs, instructor-led programs and e-learning modules that have been developed to increase the competence of today’s professionals, there is still a niche area left open in most professional knowledge areas across industries – ones that instill practical experience, provide up-to-date trends, innovative solutions from far-reaching industries or functions and most importantly customized to market needs.

Defining the Masterclass

The Masterclass was born out of the need for true mastery or proficiency in the professional arena. The APEX Global Masterclass sessions bring together a blend of high impact, state-of-the-art subject matter from niche topical areas, researched to fit the imminent need in the market. These sessions are delivered by experts who not only have practical know-how, but have comprehensive experience in their areas of expertise.
