Welcoming Speech
Welcome to the very first ASEAN Games Australia!
People, Passion, Performance. Started off last year with ASEAN Student Games, ASEAN Games Australia (AGA) aims to enhance the relationship among students from Southeast Asian countries. It is an initiative under the ASEAN-Australia Agenda (AAA) specially organized to allow athletes from ASEAN countries all across Australia to gather around and exhibit their sports talent at a competitive level. AGA being the pioneer of the AAA, seeks to build awareness about ASEAN in Australia and mutual understanding between the ASEAN community and Australian youths as well as to provide assistance to each other in the form of talent sharing and network. Through this event, participants get a chance to fully utilize their abilities through sports, at the same time promoting a healthy environment to not only participants but also audiences.
In short, the two main agendas of AGA are to unite the ASEAN community in Australia and raise awareness of participation in sport.
This year’s theme emphasizes on the rising sun. With phoenix as the AGA mascot, a symbol that sends the message of picking oneself up when beaten down. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall, it is the number of times that you decide to get back up that counts. Sport is more than just being competitive and victorious, it helps us to gain confidence and endure the challenges in life.
To quote, YB Dato’ Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, the Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports, ‘Sport is one of the best ways to break the ice.’ Apart from the various physical benefits gained from sport, sport helps create greater social contact and interaction.
On another note, we, at AGA, believe in helping those who are less fortunate than we are. Therefore, every year AGA will contribute to a different charity project. This year, we have pledged to donate 25% of our profit to the Cambodian service project. This project is in need of our help because 40%of Cambodians live below the poverty line, they are living on less than 35 cents a day. So, your participation in the games means more than you think!
Furthermore, the AGA plate, to be presented and rotated each year to the student council of the winning country. The year and country’s name will be carved onto the plate. So athletes, make the most of your four days at the games because it’s the time for you to shine for your country and compete for your home, the land that raised you up!
Last but not least, on behalf of the organizing committees, I would like to extend a cordial welcome to all participants and spectators. Also, come on down and join us for the AGA official draw ceremony and closing ceremony!
We dare to dream, we care to share. One vision, one identity, one community, ONE ASEAN.
All the best and see you at the games!

For the ASEAN Games Australia 2012, the badminton tournament will be held over two days, on the 22nd and 23rd of September. To win a match, a player must beat their competitor in a best of 3 games, with each game up to 15 rally points with settings to 21 points. The winners of each event will be determined via a round robin, singles elimination system. Each competitor will play every other competitor in their round robin group, whereby everyone will be guaranteed a minimum of 2 matches regardless of their result.
Venue: Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC)
BASKETBALL
The game will be played on the 24th and 25th of September from 9am to 5pm. The double elimination method is used to ensure that stronger teams are able to progress further into the tournament and to neutralize the element of luck involved in the first round matches. The tournament is broken down into two sets, the “Winner’s Bracket” (W Bracket) and the “Loser’s Bracket” (L Bracket). Players will have to compete against each other in the first round. Winners will advance to the W Bracket, while losers will proceed into the L Bracket. The finals of the double elimination system consist of a match between the winners from both the W Bracket and the L Bracket.
Venue: Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC)
This section provides a general rundown on the main events of ASEAN Games Australia. All players are advised to be on time at the competition venues and adhere to competition rules.
