ABOUT ASEM

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an intergovernmental process established in 1996 to foster dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe. Presently it comprises 53 partners: 30 European and 21 Asian countries, the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat. ASEM addresses Political, Economic, and Social, Cultural & Educational issues of common interest, in a spirit of mutual respect and equal partnership. For more information visit the ASEM InfoBoard website.

ABOUT ModelASEM The Model ASEM introduces students to the world of international relations, Asia-Europe diplomacy and negotiation. Organised by ASEF in conjunction with the actual ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, it is a political simulation of the actual political process to generate interest and increase awareness of ASEM among university students. In addition to the main Model ASEM conference, local student and youth associations organise Model ASEM Spin-off Editions which are supported by ASEF. Adapted to the local setting, the Spin-off Editions are smaller in scale and serve as local community engagement and ASEM promotion.

ABOUT ModelASEM9

The 9th Model ASEM is a 4-day youth conference and political simulation of ASEMFMM14. Through role-play, research, case-studies and practical trainings, about 180 students from all 51 ASEM Partner countries will enhance their diplomacy, negotiation, consensus-building and public-speaking skills. One core objective of the project is to create direct linkages between student and the ASEM Process, which we intend to achieve through Embassy Study Visits, Senior-Junior Exchanges with ASEM Foreign Ministers, and an ASEM Youth Declaration at the ASEMFMM14 Opening Ceremony.

ASEM-WIDE YOUTH SURVEY

The Open Call for Participation was launched across Asia and Europe from 11 July to 12 August 2019. As part of the Open Call, ASEF invited all applicants to join a survey to capture the views of ASEM youth on effective multilateralism. A total of 8140 students and young professionals between the ages of 18 and 30 completed the survey. The survey results were analysed generally, as well as evaluated by comparing responses from Asia and Europe, male and female applicants. If there are no significant differences between Asian and European respondents, combined results are shown. Otherwise, a comparison will be shown, This document highlights some survey results, in particular those within areas where significant differences in the responses were identified.

Disclaimer: The survey results are meant to showcase general trends.

Overall, Asian countries in ASEM have a population of almost 4 billion people (representing 88% of ASEM’s total population). The European ASEM countries have a population of slightly more than 520 million (representing 12% of ASEM’s total population). According to a 2016 population census and statistics of ASEM Partner countries, the youth population (age 15-29) is about 24% of ASEM’s total population, amounting to an estimate of 1.03 billion. Within the youth population, about 91% of them are from Asia and 9% in Europe.1 03 Current Occupation Undergraduate (BA, BSc, etc.) 54.86%
