aggression (wedgies, stuffing in lockers)• Bullying can be verbal (name calling, teasing,

threatening)• Bullying can be social/emotional (gossiping,

rumors, exclusion)• Cyberbullying can be done without even having

another person around!!!!!!!

Getting adult help

• Many children do not report bullying to school staff, but our teachers, counselor, recess aides, and administrators are all here to help

• An Ashburton survey found that 95% of kids felt that teachers and other adults helped them if they were bullied, 96% of students knew how to get help if they were bullied, and 97% of kids felt safe at school.

Think about it…

• Imagine that you see someone who is being bullied on the playground.

• Stand up if you think you would help that person

Who really helps?

A National Study asked the questions, “What do you do when you see a student being bullied?

• 38%, Nothing, it’s not my business

• 27%, I don’t do anything, but I think I should help

• 35%, I try to help

Page 19: ASHBURTON ANTI- BULLYING PTA NIGHT November 3, 2009 Andrea Gillespie Ashburton School Counselor

BYSTANDERS

• Bystanders can spur the bully on or stop the bullying

• A study found that when onlookers acted, 57% of bullying incidences stopped within ten seconds

• You may not be the bully or be the one being bullied but laughing, watching, egging the bully on, or not reporting bullying can make you guilty too!
