The Arcade, Ashburton Phone 308 5521

In just one hour you’ll arrive in Ashburton where shopping’s as simple as parking and walking a few steps to the nearest store.

Within three blocks you’ll find a little bit of everything your shopping heart desires – great clothing, fabulous gifts, shoes to die for and enough accessories to make choosing impossible. All that without having to dodge traffic lights, negotiate cars or elbow your way through crowds of fellow shoppers.

Ashburton is open, it’s on sale and it’s a shoppers’ paradise. We’re rolling out the welcome mat and we’re going overboard to make sure you’re so impressed by what we have to offer you’ll come back again, and again.

From July 21st to 30th our retailers have made a special effort to provide sale price items for Christchurch shoppers, and we’ve put on buses to make it easy for you to get here.

We’re a town of two halves. East of the main road we’re a pedestrian friendly pre-cinct, with a big range of retail outlets lining our main street, along two side streets and through a shopping arcade. Head west and, we’re all about destination shopping. There’s a cluster of big stores with a huge range of homewares that might just make you wish you’d towed a trailer.

When it comes to clothing, there’s some-thing for all ages, all tastes, all pockets, all sizes. Our retailers cater for everyone. We’re a fashion conscious town and that means you’ll find a range of clothing as good, or better than any found in a city. That wide choice comes without the hassle of having to trek several blocks to find what you want. From one end of our shopping precinct to

the other, it’s a walking distance of less than 350 metres. Add a bit more for side street diversions.

If you’re after something other than clothing, then we have a large range of specialty shops ranging from a designer

chocolate maker, kitchen, china and gift shops with enough enticing stock to keep you browsing for hours.

While we have many shops that are unique to Ashburton, we also have our own take on some of the national retail chains

too. Just because our branch store might be a bit smaller than its city counterpart doesn’t mean it’s not packed with the best the retail world has to offer. Think of the big name retailers and you’re sure to find most of those in Ashburton, clustered in a precinct that makes it easy to park and walk – if you’re not planning on buying up large. If you are, then each comes with ample parking.

And when you want to stop and recharge your batteries, then you don’t have to walk far to find a cafe or restaurant where you can take a break. Our cafes are so good, their food and coffee so tempting, you might just find you spend a good part of your shopping day in the food zone.

If your friends are big shoppers and you’re not, then there’s still every reason to join the exodus south. Why not book in for a facial, manicure, spa treatment or a special hair treatment? Let them shop while you chill out and enjoy a spot of pampering.

If you’ve done the smart thing and headed to the big Ashburton shoppers’ day out with a dedicated driver, why hurry home when your retail therapy is done?

There are plenty of top class restaurants in town that will also roll out the welcome mat to weary shoppers. Relax with a glass of wine, a plate of nibbles, or if you’re in the mood to linger, with an evening meal before you head home.

Come, stop, park and shop – you’ll go home relaxed, refreshed and with your retail needs satisfied - until next weekend.

Hop on down, we’re just an hour away

When the original Mr Robilliard opened his jewellery store next door to Sparrows on East Street 115 years ago, he could never have imagined the gorgeous glittering store that would still bear his family name today.

Long gone are the fob watches and clocks of the 1890’s. Present owners Mark and Jayne Douglas say that jewellery buying is now a very affordable, easy purchase. “The Pandora range has encouraged more men into buying jewellery, many of them returning four or five times a year.” It has also opened jewellery up to a younger market. “We have a number of good quality, inexpensive lines that are just gorgeous.”

Karen Walker is another New Zealand-designed range that continues to grow in popularity. “We try and stock as wide a range of everything as we can, but if we don’t have a particular item, we will do our best to get it in for you.

To have reached 115 years is an enormous achievement – one that few businesses attain. Mark and Jayne say they

are very proud to celebrate this milestone. “We have a fantastic team in the store, and every day at work is fun.”

Robilliards have previously been associated with the Gemtime Jewellers franchise, which was recently purchased by Showcase. Showcase Jewellers understand that each piece of jewellery tells a story. An item of jewellery can make a representation of your personality and style and often holds great sentimental value, so our local team work with you to ensure that your purchase will be one to treasure. No matter where you are in the country, Showcase will be close at hand with more than 30 stores nationwide.

We also offer an extensive range of watch brands including Pulsar, Lorus, Seiko, Citizen, Maxum, and Olympic.

So whether it’s a fashionable pair of diamond earrings, a gorgeous Pandora charm bracelet, the latest designer watch or a sparkling diamond engagement ring, your local Showcase jeweller is always here to help you.

Ashburton is just a one hour commute from Christchurch and it’s a commute a growing number of people are making each day – in both directions.

There are dozens of reasons why people choose to live in Ashburton and work in Christchurch, not the least of those is our lifestyle. Down here it’s easy, relaxed and stress free. A two minute wait at a traffic round-a-bout is a long wait, a one person queue to be served in a shop is surprising. We have everything the city has without the hassle.

When it comes to services, facilities, recreational opportunities, it’s all here, everything the city has to offer and more. And if what you want isn’t on your door-step, do what the locals do, have a day – or an evening out in the city.

When Christchurch is the place you visit rather than the place you call home, you view it quite differently. It’s a wonderful place to visit for a day or a weekend. You

see it through different eyes when you’re a short term visitor. It’s an exciting and engaging place in which to live and it’s a great place to visit.

Living in the Ashburton District doesn’t mean you sacrifice any of your city comforts, in fact buying a home in Ashburton – or Methven, Rakaia or a rural area – means you’ll probably have more time and more money to get on with living.

Traditionally it has cost more to buy the average city home than it has one in Ashburton. The latest sales figures released by Quotable Value show that in June, the average price of homes sold in the Ashburton District was $277,000. For that you’ll get a good three bedroom house in a good suburb.

Our housing market is as wide as your imagination and as deep as your pocket. Check out the listings of local real estate agents on-line and you’ll find almost 600 homes across the district listed and waiting

for new owners. If you fancy something a bit more rural, then you can choose from the 86 lifestyle or 22 rural properties.

If you have a yen to build, then you’ll be spoiled for choice. There are at least 250 sections available of all sizes, across the range of prices.

Maybe you fancy living by water at Lake Hood or living in the mountains at Terrace Downs or Methven or perhaps you prefer a lot in one of the many subdivisions that are on stream or in development around Ashburton.

And even better, if you decide to relocate and build, then we have all the services, from architects and draughtsmen to every tradesperson imaginable. It’s quite easy to build a home without using a single service outside the district. We’re pretty proud of our self-contained status.

Ashburton sets itself high standards when it comes to the facilities it provides for residents – great health services, superb

schools (rural and urban options) and sports venues to meet virtually every need.

Looking to the future, we have a new art gallery and museum complex and a new sports stadium and aquatic centre soon to be built. The latter will add to our hockey turf and tennis centre, already well used by national and international teams. In the not-too-distant-future, a velodrome will also be part of the sports complex.

We’re well known for the huge green spaces and parks that dot our town and probably set some kind of national record for accessibility to golf – for our population of just under 30,000 we have five golf courses (plus Terrace Downs). By city standards are golf subs are a joke, but our courses are not.

And if that’s not enough, our cost of living is lower, but our standard of living is not.

Easy, relaxed and stress free

The long-term master plan for Ashburton’s Riverside Sports Centre, shows that in addition to the core facility, and indoor sports stadium and aquatic centre, provision has been made for a wide range of other sports to be part of the complex.

Concrete housing the informed choice

Strength & SafetyNew Zealand is one of the world’s leaders in designing buildings to withstand earthquakes and our building codes require a very highstandard of earthquake “performance”. The earthquake performance requirements for New Zealand homes are excactly the same regardless of the materials used in construction. So concrete homes are at least as safe in earthquakes - and have you ever tried to burn concrete?

Thermal StorageConcrete’s great thermal storage properties mean it not only captures free energy from the sun, but it also acts as a temperature moderator. Whether it be summer or winter, day or night, substantial temperature fluctuations within the home can largely eliminated with good design using concrete - consistent temperature means consistent comfort.

Sound InsulationConcrete has a natural ability to insulate against noise transmission - and less noise means greater comfort. It is the density of concrete that will allow you to enjoy unsurpassed peace and quiet in your home.

ComfortA concrete home which is designed following some straight forward design principles is simply more comfortable to live in than a traditional light timber frame house. Concrete is more comfortable as a result of two properties that are inherent in the material - sound insulation and thermal storage.

Your healthBut there’s more than your comfort at stake - concrete homes are healthier. The temperature moderating effect of a well designed concrete home maintains an environment which is healthier, especially for the eldery, young children and people with respiratory conditions.

Build timeMass production techniques allow as little as eight weeks ‘on site’ build time for a typical three bedroom home in Canterbury. This gives savings in temporary accommodation rentals and with bridging finance.

While shopping might be the main focus when Ashburton rolls out its welcome mat from July 21st to 30th, there’s much more to our town than just first rate shops.

There’s too much to do in Ashburton for just a one-off visit; it’s also the perfect place for a family weekend away – accommodation for every pocket, activities for every taste. Most of what’s available in Ashburton and the wider district, comes with a comfortable price tag. We’re not only accessible, we’re also affordable.

If arts, culture and entertainment are on your list, then you don’t have to go far to enjoy what we can offer.

A grand Georgian building in Baring Square East (in the town centre) is home to the Ashburton’s art gallery and museum. There’s always an interesting touring exhibition on display along with local art works in the gallery, and in the museum, the story of the Ashburton District is well told in a series of attractively mounted displays.

Walk down the historic triangle to the Ashburton Event Centre on Wills Street and you’ll find our movie theatre with screenings running most of the day and night and the Ashburton Event Centre, which hosts an almost non-stop run of visiting music and theatre groups. Most weekends it’s well used by out of town events and by locals.

If you’re in to mountain biking, you can happily spend a day or two on the riverside trails. There’s a fantastic ride from the Ashburton River Bridge to the sea on the north side and from the bridge to Lake Hood on the south. Both trails are out and back. Take your lunch if you’re heading to the coast and enjoy that in the quaint seaside settlement of Hakatere. If you choose the south trail, then pack a few dollars and enjoy a coffee or lunch at the Lakehouse Restaurant.

If swimming’s your thing, our community pool is easy to find. It’s on Walnut Avenue outside our large secondary school, Ashburton College.

For aviation and rail buffs, Ashburton

has two museums that are nationally recognised for the standard of their displays and working models. The Ashburton Aviation Museum, just five minutes out of town at Ashburton Airport, has one of the best collections of aviation memoriabilia outside the country’s airforce bases. The museum is open weekends and by appointment.

Across the Ashburton River Bridge in Tinwald, the Plains Railway has working engines that ply the narrow gauge rail in the historic Plains village. The rail has open days once a month. Head for the hills if you fancy getting out into the country. Of course there’s Mt Hutt if you choose to come in winter and you want to enjoy a day on the slopes. It’s even worth a visit if skiing is not your thing, simply for the unbelievable views from the top.

If it’s summer and you fancy a day or two in the bush, why not walk the Mt Somers track. It’s a two day trip, three if you want to dawdle, with two good huts on the way. It’s a good moderate grade, walking track, achievable by just about everyone

if walked at your own pace. You can start your walk at either Sharplin Falls at Staveley or off the Ashburton Gorge Road.

The Ashburton District’s heart is in its back country, with endless biking and walking tracks and the huge Hakatere Conservation Park encompassing tracks, trails, lakes, wetlands and vast, open spaces.

It’s also a place of hidden surprises in its towns and tiny hamlets. Check out Methven the district’s iconic ski village. Winter or summer there’s plenty to do and see, plenty of places to wine and dine. It also has a brand new heritage centre that has a growing display area covering the district’s agricultural past – and present.

Drive the scenic highway along the foothills. It’s a magic place with great stopping spots, particularly Staveley and Mount Somers. Or if your journey is without time constraints, then head into our stunning back country lakes, stay, camp or just sit back and enjoy scenery that goes for ever in the Hakatere Conservation Park.

Braided Rivers

The recipe for a memorable eveningTake an array of fresh, local

produce, combine it with the skills of an experienced chef, mix in a bunch of style and a large helping of friendliness and fun, and you’ll have the recipe behind the success of Braided Rivers, Ashburton’s premiere restaurant and bar.

Adjoining the main bar and restaurant, where seven days a week you’ll find fabulous food, a great local atmosphere and an ambience that would be just as at home in Queenstown, Christchurch, Auckland or Sydney, is what those behind Braided River like to refer to as their “fun” dining area. The service is akin to the archetypal fine dining experience, but with that quintessential Ashburton touch that transforms an evening from formal to fun, whilst not compromising on quality.

The décor is warm and chic, with plush carpets, wooden furniture and stunning lighting

features. Linked to the main bar area by a cosy courtyard, with roaring fire and big-screen television, at Braided Rivers you can start the evening with a casual

drink in the bar, slip away for dinner with friends, then enjoy the rugby on the big screen – all without changing venues!

The cuisine at Braided Rivers matches the décor – stylish, hearty and using high quality produce. The head chef, formally of Pedros in Christchurch, serves up season-appropriate dishes, with something for all tastebuds. The menu includes cooked and raw oysters, West Coast Whitebait (fritter or christiano style), Braised Shoulder of Lamb, Duck Confit and Steak with all manner of sauces.

Irresistible desserts, including Classic Crème Brulee with chocolate and pistachio biscotti and Croissant & Prune Bread & Butter Pudding, are sublime examples of the chef’s passion for traditional and contemporary flair.
