Ashburton College News Individual Excellence in a Supportive Learning Environment Issue 23 25 July 2019 Underway With Term Three With the second student break out of the way, we plough headlong into Term Three which, for some, is arguably the most concentrated term of them all. Teaching towards NCEA at all levels is the major focus for staff and students alike, as assignments and deadlines take priority. For so many students it is the realisation that the year is in its Deputy Principal Message Staff final phase and procrastination is the new potential enemy. Monitoring Progress Towards NCEA College staff will also be monitoring student progress towards NCEA and meeting with students who look as though they may need to focus or re-group. This is potentially the time when some students start to feel as though it is all too much and give up. I urge that any young person or parent or caregiver who is starting to feel that it is getting too much, gets in touch with the subject teacher in the first instance and has a good chat about the situation. Too many times I have met with the students who have arrived at this point but, after a chat, and a look at what needs to be done, we have been able to formulate a manageable plan that will fit in with the time that is left. Now is the time to do that because as we all know, you can’t put things off indefinitely and still get the prize that you desire and have the talent to claim. The reality, as parents and caregivers know, is that one day, you have run out of tomorrows. AshColl Way Things have been on the go with regards to the AshColl Way and we are planning to launch our ‘Expected Behaviours Matrix’ in the next couple of weeks. We have been working hard with the wonderful team at DPI Design and Print Ashburton to come up with an AshColl Way logo that incorporates the three College Values as well as the College logo. Each of the Values is represented symbolically as shown here. The Expected Behaviours Matrix has been established as a result of consultation with some of our students and staff, and will be used as steady reminders of the way we do business at Ashburton College. They will be prominently displayed around the College and will be there for all to follow. Key areas with specific behaviour needs will be individually catered for, but the whole scheme will be underpinned by a category that is headed ‘All Settings’ as shown below. Apology to Spray Marks We do apologise however, that Spray Marks was not credited for their significant, and quality, traffic management input. It was incorrectly credited to another firm. This is a service Spray Marks have provided for several years and we thank the following key people for this input: Grant Pithie did a great job with the Transport Management planning, adapting the plan this year, which successfully sped up arrivals on what was a traditionally freezing cold night! Cornelius Matla and Stew Lilley were on site for the second consecutive year; setting up, monitoring and controlling the process, as well as packing up at the end. We thank them sincerely for sacrificing their Friday night for a cold evening outdoors during the event! Welcome on Entry On entering the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, attendees were formally met by (right to left) Principal Ross Preece; Deputy Principals Helen Shore- Taylor, Ron Cresswell and Jono Hay; Head Boy William Wallis and Head Girl Mollie Gibson; and Ball Committee Co-Leaders Maisie Looij and Julie Mushonga. High School Musical – The Ashburton College Production A highlight to end Term Two with was the College’s High School Musical Production. The show was impressive, fast-moving, light and bright, back-dropped by great scenery, superbly choreographed and musically directed, with polished acting. The students captured the intent and nuances of the production very well, with timing well-executed. Three evenings of audiences thoroughly appreciated the talent on display, on and off stage, and the customary hard work which always precedes performance nights. Director Claire Bubb, Choreographer Kylie Backhouse-Smith, and Musical Director former College student Olivia Pike, should be well-pleased with the outcome, as should all who performed and participated. (Pictured left, left and right): Savannah Martin as Gabriella Montez and Calais Hill as Troy Bolten. Trophy Winners and Place-getters at Aoraki Junior Basketball Championships Ashburton College had two boys’ and two girls’ teams at these Championships, with the Boys’ Championship held on 26 June and the Girls’ on 27 June, close to the end of last term, with very good results.
