Looking for a good Christmas gift idea, or need a calendar for your wall? This wonderful calendar is available for sale from 23 October at the following outlets: Ashburton College News Individual Excellence in a Supportive Learning Environment Issue 24 6 November 2014 Information Information Prize-Givings Parents, Caregivers and family members are most welcome to attend these celebrations of student success. Year 12 Tonight Thursday 06 November 7:30pm Ashburton Trust Event Centre Year 11 Friday 07 November 1:45pm Auditorium Year 10 Thursday 11 December 12:30pm Auditorium Year 9 Thursday 11 December 1:45pm Auditorium Each year level finishes on the day of their Prize-Giving. Week 4 of Term 4 marks the end of a raft of activities including those associated with farewells to our students who are leaving Ashburton College at the end of 2014. We have had the Blues Assembly where students were recognised for their Sporting and Cultural achievements; the announcement of the winning House for 2014 (Blue of course!); the Chess Match where Staff take on the Student Executive in a chess ‘water fight’ on the College Chessboard; Year 13 Graduation and tonight the Year 12 Prize-Giving where the Head Boy and Head Girl for 2015 will be announced; and now hurtling into the real business part of the year – the final NCEA examinations. Advice of the accumulation of credits over the course of the year means that students know exactly what they need to reach the ‘magic figure’ required to gain each Level of the NCEA. An NCEA study has observed that once students know (or think) that they have reached the ‘pass’ figure, the motivation to keep going and to do really well may be affected and this may impact on how well they prepare for and perform in the external examinations. It’s not that simple! Students, especially those who are hoping to gain University Entrance from their course this year, must remember that tertiary faculties, in setting their entry criteria for courses, are looking at the quality of the credits that students are gaining – how many Achieved, Merit and Excellence Grades they have gained. It is clear that students must aim to do their very best at whatever level they are studying. A consistently good, motivated attitude towards study, achievement in school work and towards performance in external examinations is the kind of attitude that can play a part in a student’s future success. I wish all candidates the very best for their NCEA exams. Special Awards This year, for the first time, we acknowledged two Year 12 students who are achieving outstanding results in their chosen field of music, but which was outside the Colours Criteria. Amelia James Winning a prestigious scholarship to attend the Tamworth Country Music Festival in Australia was a fortuitous achievement for Amelia James. It was during this festival in January that Amelia was spotted by the CEO of LMF Music Australia and was offered a record and music development deal. Since this time, Amelia has been regularly travelling to and from Australia to work with International Directors, Performers, Mentors and Producers. Under the stage name, EmeliaJ, Amelia has already recorded two singles and is currently filming video clips for their international release. One of these original songs was written in a music studio at Ashburton College. The release of this single will coincide with the official international launch of EmeliaJ, the pop star. Liam Kennedy-Clark Liam Kennedy-Clark is fast becoming a household name within New Zealand Country Music circles and beyond. Performing in Australia at Tamworth, the spiritual home of Australian country music, Liam was crowned the Junior Aristocrat Entertainer of the Year, the Junior Male winner of the CCMA Music Awards, and the Overall Winner of the Coca Cola/Yamaha Battle of the Young Stars. Also in Australia, he was the runner-up in the ‘Voice of Urban’ at the Urban Country Music Festival in Queensland. On the home front, Liam has won Country Music competitions throughout New Zealand. He was the 2014 Canterbury Regional Winner of the Solo/Duo section at the Smokefree Rockquest and, just this month, he won the Intermediate Section of the New Zealand Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year. Liam has recently released his debut album - ‘The Road Out’ which has reached number 5 on the New Zealand Independent Music Charts and number 10 on the New Zealand Album Charts. These students join the ten Summer 2014 Colours Award Recipients to form the full 2014 list of Colours Awards. Summer Recipients were: Tessa Stewart Morrison (Basketball), Jessie Banks (Cycling), Bailie Perriton (Motor Sport), Matthew Clough (Swimming), Hannah Wakelin (Performing Arts), Matthew Harford (Swimming), Caitlin Johnstone (Swimming), George Donaldson (Water Skiing), Hugh Donaldson (Water Skiing), Hannah Wright (Water Skiing). Cycling National DevelopmentSquad Selection – Jessie BanksYear 9 student Jessie Banks has ridden her way into the 2015 New Zealand National Under 17 Development Squad. This is a very fine result when considering Jessie is just thirteen years of age. At the beginning of December Jessie travels to Manawatu to take part in the Tour of Manawatu on 05 and 06 December, with two riding stages each day. Following this Jessie then goes into camp for four days. Through a programme of structured camps and events led by national coaches with expertise in coaching Under 17 riders, riders will gain core road cycling skills and techniques. Coaches will identify any gaps and teach riders how to strategically and tactically race, working on the fundamental skill sets required for future success in cycling. Away from the technical side, information is given in relation to Team Culture, Cycling 101 and Equipment, physical strength, power and endurance, foundation skills and techniques, sports science, time management/organisation and professionalism, and communication and emotional resilience.Following this camp Jessie will continue her training, working towards the Track Nationals in March.

A warm day in Timaru on Tuesday 21 October greeted College’s Junior Tennis Team as they vied for titles at the these Championships. Ashburton College entered two teams, one in each the boys’ and girls’ divisions. The girls proved to be triumphant against all of their opposition and eventually took the overall Junior Girls’ Title in the final against Waitaki Girls’ High School A. The boys had good qualifying rounds against their opponents but met their match against Timaru Boys’ High School. However they played good, entertaining tennis where they were forced to reach for their best game.

Petanque – An Impressive Start Written by Journalism Student Emily HickmanLabour weekend was full of excitement for Year 12 students Shannon Crequer and Emily Hickman, who travelled down to Dunedin to compete in the 2014 South Island Petanque Doubles Championships. The girls have formed the College’s first ever petanque team. After hearing about it in the school notices they decided to give it a go themselves. Shannon and Emily had only been training for one month when their coach Richard Browne suggested they enter into the prestigious South Island competition. Upon arriving it was clear that the girls were the youngest and most inexperienced players competing in the tournament but they didn’t let that affect them. On the Saturday Shannon and Emily had a convincing win, beating two very experienced men 13-3. They then went on to win their second game against two skilled women players from Christchurch (12-4). After losing the next four games, the girls were picking up skills from the opposition and even getting impromptu coaching from other players willing to help out. From their efforts on the first day Shannon and Emily had placed 16th. On the Sunday the Ashburton College duo were to face the number one seeds from Saturday, a very challenging Christchurch pair. Adjusting to the weather conditions, Shannon and Emily managed to pull out a very surprising, but convincing win, of 13-6. The girls couldn’t manage another win so, after three more close losses, they had a great final placing of 13th out of 22 teams. The next step for the Ashburton College Petanque team is hopefully to attend Youth Nationals which are being held in December.

Peter Smart Writing Competition Success This prestigious writing competition is open to all South Island Secondary Schools but is particularly focused on Canterbury schools. This year saw the return of the competition after a four year hiatus following the earthquakes. Faith Oxenbridge judged the prose section of the competition. Ashburton College placed very well: Senior Prose1st: Lauren Yeatman with her piece ‘Monday Night’, for which she

received a $50 prize.Junior Prose2nd equal: Danielle Morrison, with ‘Winter Morning’.
