Ashburton College News Individual Excellence in a Supportive Learning Environment Issue 31 29 October 2020 Red Carpet Evening Last Thursday we had our annual Red Carpet Evening. This is a highlight of our musical year, where our top performers are invited to present to their whānau and our community. As we all appreciate, there have been few opportunities for any kind of performance that involves even a limited audience this year. It was a great night. I would like to thank all our performers and, most importantly, the Music Department staff, itinerant music teachers and the student’s own music teachers. Without them, such an evening would not be possible. Te Whare Manaaki As part of our consideration of our College campus we have undertaken a rebranding exercise with our Student Learning Support Unit. This facility, a welcome part of our College, has always been known as the SLSU. After due consultation, we have decided that a more relevant name is ‘Te Whare Manaaki’. My thanks go to our students and their parents/caregivers for their input into this decision. As part of our new build the students will, in the future, enjoy a purpose-built facility, however the name Te Whare Manaaki will be retained within the new facility. College Charter and Strategic Document Review We have undertaken a recent review of our College Charter and strategic documents. These are obviously key documents for Ashburton College as we look towards the future. At its simplest form there are two future trends that we are preparing our students for. The first of these is that the world of work and employment is likely to be very different for a significant portion of our population. Soft skills such as collaboration, creativity and oral communication will become increasingly important. We are working towards a changed future. This year, the widespread use of Zoom technology was a clear example of how quickly future changes may arrive. The second recognition is that our Mid Canterbury and global communities are becoming increasingly diverse. In the future, to be good global citizens, people will need to be more culturally responsive and accepting of diversity. In both cases we are planning for a different future. College Roll Our roll continues to grow. Our number of students means that we are able to offer a full and wide range of academic and vocational courses. This trend is, in part, recognition that the employment prospects in Mid Canterbury are healthy and that housing is affordable in comparison with other regions. Part of the rationale for our new build is recognition by Ministry of Education that this trend will continue, and will mirror the growth in many of our local primary schools. Final Assemblies This term is always frantic with many scheduled events, deadlines and recognitions. We always enjoy the final assemblies, especially our Year 13 Graduation. We look forward to having you join us for this celebration on 5 November 2020 at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. The schools’ event attracted over 150 riders from forty six schools, and incorporated the South Island Schools’ Championship. This year was the second National Schools’ Track Championships, following the inaugural event in Cambridge last year. Racing was held over two days and was run in an Omnium-style (multiple race event) points system, where points were allocated on finishing positions in each race, across the events of Scratch, Points and Keirin (where cyclists sprint for victory following a speed-controlled start behind a pacer). Results Maddi, competing in the Under 17 Girls’ age group, raced hard and was competitive in all of her races, finishing very creditably in 4th place in the South Island competition and 6th place in the National competition overall. Players can enter as individuals without a qualifying standard but teams are required to qualify, achieved through being in the top five in their district. Isaac and Brooke both entered in the individual competition also, in the Under 19 Boys and Under 17 Girls respectively. Results Isaac placed 25th in the B2 Grade, and Brooke 9th in the Under 17 Girls grade. There were ten teams in each of the team’s grades Isaac and Brooke were involved in. The boys’ team finished last, including losing a top player to injury, which meant each player had to play up a level. The girls’ team placed 6th from the ten teams. This was Isaac’s first time at the event in the team’s event, having previously entered as an individual only, while Brooke played in both the individual and team competition last year. Both loved the tournament saying it was good experience, and fun. (Pictured below, left and right): Brooke and Isaac in action on the courts. Last of the 2020 House Sports Competitions The build-up to revealing the winning House for 2020 draws closer, as the final count ticks down to the final whole-College Assembly scheduled for Tuesday 03 November. House Netball After the long lay-off from House Competitions due to the COVID restrictions, House Netball was the first to take place towards the end of Term Three, played in three levels – Year 9/10, Year 11/12 and Year 13. The first round took place on Thursday 17 September, for Year 11/12 players, with Blue House emerging winners over Orange House (11-4), and Red House over Green House (6-3). On Friday 18 September the Year 9/10 teams, repeated the Year 11/12 draw and took the court, with wins to Red and Blue Houses. Year 13 players then had their rounds on Tuesday 22 September, with Green emerging winners over Red, and Blue over Orange. Finals Outcomes from play on Tuesday 22 September and Thursday 24 September Year 13 Blue House took the honours over Green House (6-1). Year 11/12 Brought a narrow 5-4 win to Red House, over Blue House. Year 9/10 In a repeat of the Year 11/12 final the score was 5-4 to Red House, over Blue House. House Volleyball The Volleyball matches – Junior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys - were played from Tuesday 13–Thursday 15 October, with finals day drawing good crowd numbers around the Chessboard and strong House support. In line with Term Four protocols, House points and results now remain under wraps until announcement day. Acknowledgement A huge acknowledgement goes to Jayne Cornelius for her work, with the College Sports Committee, in co-ordinating these events throughout the year, and rearranging them as was required during this year. (Pictured left): The Girls’ Final takes place simultaneously on the second court, with Principal Ross Preece officiating as referee. Flagpole Legacy Project by 2020 Student Executive ‘The Year 13’s Legacy Project For 2020 is up’ was the announcement! Each of the four flagpoles (pictured below), sited on the Chessboard in front of the library, now fluttering in the various wind directions, represent a House at AshColl – Blue, Green, Orange and Red. The flags will be adjusted to the height of whoever is in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place at the time. A massive shout-out is given to Ashburton Contracting Limited (ACL) for installing the poles, and to Head Boy Henry Chapman for organising this project. This year’s Student Executive has issued a challenge for 2021 when a competition will be held to design each House’s unique House Flag. New Zealand Squash Junior Nationals Another sporting event to be held in the recent school holiday period, from 01-06 October in Christchurch, were the above Championships. Two Ashburton College students, Year 13 Isaac Bazley and Year 11 student Brooke Cornish-Madden, who both play for the Ashburton Squash Club within the Midland Region (Ashburton to Oamaru) were selected and involved as part of the Midlands Junior team comprised of five females and five males).
