Ashburton College News Individual Excellence in a Supportive Learning Environment Issue 22 11 July 2019 Now that the excitement of the College Ball has died down, Ashburton College settles back into work mode. My thanks to all those parents who supported their children, particularly with the end of term NCEA deadlines. Build Redevelopment Last week we had two meetings with the Ministry of Education regarding our new build. In particular, we are looking at the big picture Message From The Principal Events outline of the future Ashburton College. We are certain that features such as good acoustics, lighting and temperature control are a given for any new build. We are also clear that we need a variety of spaces such as some specialist rooms, some single cell classrooms, and some flexible spaces that can house a greater number of students. We also are aiming to create an indoor/outdoor flow for most of our classrooms. As part of this process we are seeking parental input into the desired nature of our rebuild such as, if it is raining and cold where do our students congregate? This survey will come out to all our parents and caregivers early in Term 3. We are also surveying our staff and students. Our last parent survey regarding uniforms provided much valuable feedback and we are hoping for a similar level of response regarding the new build. Term Three Events Speaking of events early in Term 3, on Thursday 25 July we will have our second Ako meetings. These are the three-way conversations between staff, learners and whānau. The bookings for these are made on-line. These meetings provide a chance for learners to revisit career aspirations, check on academic progress since Term 1 and consider course planning and options for 2020. On the evening of Friday 02 August the College Alumni is hosting a function for former students, staff and Board of Trustee members of Ashburton College. This event will run from 4:00pm to 7:00pm and will include an outline of the future for education, a chance for a guided tour of our campus, something to eat and drink, and most importantly, a chance to catch up with old classmates. Enrolment Zone To cope with our anticipated roll growth over the next ten years the Ministry of Education is requiring us to create an enrolment zone for Ashburton College. As part of this process we are required to consult with our community and we were requested to establish preferred boundaries for this zone. We have tried to use commonsense in establishing these boundaries. Our preferred zone includes the natural boundaries of the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers and also our boundary with Mt Hutt College (which already has a zone). Our other request is that our school zone was as close as possible to our Transport Entitlement Zone because it made no sense that there had previously been a significant difference between the two. Copies of this proposal are available on our website and at our College Office. We will also be consulting with our contributing and neighbouring schools, and there will be a link to the Ministry of Education for those who wish to provide feedback. Please stay warm over the break. Many thanks, Ross Preece Principal Information Ashburton College Alumni Information Parent/Caregiver/Student/ Ako Teacher Meetings Thursday 25 July, from 9:30am-7:30pm, at Ashburton College Note: College is closed for normal instruction on this day. Cheryl Hardy, teacher-in-charge, said the Year 13 students who came to assist had as much fun as the students they were supporting, and that it was a wonderful example of AshColl students providing a great opportunity for their peers and showing them empathy and support. Many thanks are extended to the EA Networks Centre for their generous support of the venture, and for setting up the venue. She also added that all of the students had to learn new routines for both trampoline and gymnastics, in their training for an hour a week and all this in only one month! A number of the competitors on the day were those who train for three-plus hours a day. Ashburton College had two students competing in the trampoline division - Jack Templeton in the Men’s A Grade and Mia Jessep in the Women’s A Grade. Both piked, twisted and back-dropped into some great scores! Trampoline Results Jack Templeton 1st in his division (Individual A Grade Boys), with an overall score of 28.366. Mia Jessep Against some very tough competitors, gained 4th overall (Individual A Grade Girls), with an overall score of 29.999. (Pictured left and right): Jack and Marlese with their certificates and medals. It has been a busy time for our gymnasts and trampoline exponents recently. After trampolinists Marlese Schoonderbeek and Jack Templeton competed on Sunday 16 June they were joined by four additional College students and competed again on Tuesday 18 June, at the above competition held at Olympia, Christchurch. (Pictured below, left to right): The team of Ellie Lawn, Marlese Schoonderbeek, Jack Templeton, Aaliyah Power, Mia Jessep, Laura Cameron. (Pictured below, left to right): Executing their individual routines are Aaliyah Power, Laura Cameron and Ellie Lawn. Among some of the strong regulations required, to avoid points’ deductions, are the requirements to stay in the red box area on the mat and ensure landing on both feet at the same time, plus front and back somersaults performed with toes pointed and arms reaching for the sky. Rebecca said that both Mia and Jack were a pleasure to watch. After the trampoline section they then both had to switch their minds over to the gymnastics side. Artistic Gymnastics College’s six students, ranging from Year 9 to Year 11, competed in this competition on the floor, beam (rings for boys), bar and vault. The hour of competition was then full of casts, handstands, back-walkovers, saltos, flatbacks, arabesques, back hip circles and more. (Pictured left): Mia Jessep gaining height in her trampoline routine. Artistic Gymnastics Results Jack Templeton – winner: Individual Men’s Open C Grade, with an overall score of 36.65 Individual Women’s Level 2 Novice Mia Jessep placed 3rd on vault, and an overall score of 35.40. Aaliyah Power 3rd on floor, and an overall score of 35.80. Laura Cameron received some personal bests, and gained an overall score of 34.50. Individual Women’s Level 3 Novice Marlese Schoonderbeek 3rd on vault, and overall score of 33.50. Ellie Lawn gained some amazing personal best scores, and an overall score of 34.60. Both Marlese and Ellie had a challenging bar routine as it included a skill that they have never attempted before. They both supported each other when they had to do the double hip circle, which made them a great team. Rebecca said that watching the College students strut their stuff, have fun, do their best, as well as encouraging each other, is always a pleasure to be part of. For some, this was their first ever time competing in this type of event, yet all can’t wait till next year to do it all again and represent Ashburton College. Each of these competitors, even with trampoline and gymnastics mainly being an individual sport, bonded as a team on and off the floor. They did themselves, Ashburton College and their Dynamic Coaches proud! Rebecca said she can’t wait to see them, and hopefully others, from Ashburton College compete next year and flip towards personal bests. 2019 Top School Award for Gymnastics – AshColl at Number Three News just came through on Friday 29 June from School Sport Canterbury of these awards, with Ashburton College very excited to have been named in the top three. Burnside High School, who haven’t won this for a number of years, was named as the top school, followed by Christchurch Girls’ High School in second and Ashburton College in third place. Champions’ badges and certificates will be delivered to schools by the start of Term Three. This outcome is a real credit to Dynamic Gymnastics Sports Club, Ashburton, the students and their Coach Nicci Glanville. Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Artistic Gymnastics and Trampoline Competition Great Results for College Students in the Smokefree Rockquest Regional Finals Two Ashburton College bands travelled down to Timaru on Saturday 22 June to compete in the Smokefree Rockquest regional finals, held at Mountainview High School. (Pictured below): Ocean Waitokia of Empoly8 receiving the band’s second place award. On Sunday 16 June ICE Trampoline Rangiora, Canterbury’s only dedicated Trampoline Club, held the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Trampoline Competition. Apparently this is the first time that ICE has included a College level competition, having previously held these only for Primary and Intermediate levels. With this opportunity now available it is hoped that next year more College students can be involved as it is a perfect sport for students not involved in other sports, or who trampoline as a recreational sport. Gold Medal Winning Performances At this competition Marlese Schoonderbeek and Jack Templeton represented Ashburton College and did themselves, Ashburton College and their coach proud. With five judges evaluating, each judging different areas of difficulty, including execution, flight and staying within the bounce area, Marlese and Jack tucked, twisted and somersaulted into first place, earning them each a Gold Medal. Marlese’s mother, Rebecca, said that this competition is open to anyone who wishes to compete in trampoline and represent their school, with the minimum requirement being able to learn the Blue Badge routine. Both Marlese and Jack competed in the A Grade, which is at Yellow Badge level. Marlese has competed at other trampoline competitions for her club, Dynamic Gymnastics Sports, but this was Jack’s first trampoline competition, also via Dynamic Gymnastics Sports. Nicci Glanville of the Dynamic Gymnastics Sports Club, Ashburton, is the competitors’ coach. Gold Medal Results at Canterbury Secondary Schools’ ICE Trampoline Competition Liam Pram also took out the Best Musicianship Award (pictured above) receiving his award.
