1220 One day a lady came to Lady Ayesha, may Allah be

pleased with her, and asked her to show her the tomb of the

Prophet, praise and peace be upon him. Lady Ayesha showed

her the tomb whereupon the lady started to weep and

    continued weeping until she died.

1221 When the Meccans took Zaid, bn Ad!"athina out of the

#acred Precincts to martyr him, Abu #ufyan, bn $arb, said to

him, % ask you by Allah, don&t you wish that Muhammad was

with us right now so that he would be in your place and that it

would be his head that would be se'ered, and you were with

your family(%Zaid replied, %)y Allah, would not wish that

Muhammad would be in a place where e'en a thorn would prickhim, e'en if that was the condition of me being returned to my

    family*% Abu #ufyan said, % ha'e ne'er seen anyone who lo'ed

another in the way the +ompanions of Muhammad lo'e

    Muhammad*%

1222 bn Abbas tells us of the time a woman from Mecca

came to the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, in Medina.

pon her arri'al the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him,

asked her to pledge by Allah that she had not left her home on

account of her husband&s anger, or because she wanted a

change in her surroundings, and that the only reason for her

lea'ing was because of her lo'e of Allah and $is Messenger,

praise and peace be upon him.

1223 As bn A-!Zubair lay martyred, bn Omar stood o'er him

and prayed for his forgi'eness and said, %)y Allah, according to

what know of you, you were a person who fasted, prayed andlo'ed Allah and $is Messenger%, praise and peace be upon him.

Partition The signs of loving the

Prophet, praise and peace be upon him

now! that when someone claims that he lo'es a person, he will

'erily prefer that person to all others, he will also prefer what

they like, if it were otherwise then he would only be doing lip!ser'ice and his lo'e would not be sincere. /he following signs

will be apparent in those who truly lo'e the Prophet, praise and

    peace be upon him.

/he 0rst sign of lo'e for the Prophet, praise and peace be upon

him, is that /he person will follow his e1ample, apply hisprophetic way in words, deeds, obedience to his commands,

a'oidance of whate'er he prohibited and adopt his manner in

times of ease, hardship, 2oy and disappointment. Allah says,

3Say If you love Allah, follow me and Allah will love you4 5657.

/he ne1t sign is that the person will set aside his own desires

and appetite in preference to the law established and

encouraged by the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him.

Allah says, 3Those before them who had made their dwelling in

the abode (City of Medina), and because of their belief love

those who have emigrated to them; they do not nd any (envy)

in their chests for what they have been given and !refer them

above themselves, even though they themselves have a need4

    8969

/he ne1t sign is that a person&s anger of others is only for the

sake of seeking the pleasure of Allah.

1224 :udge Abu Ali Al $a0- told us, Abu Al $ussain As!#ayra0,

and Abu Al ;adhil bn hayroun, both told us, Abu Ali bn Zaid, that, Anas bn Malik was told by the Prophet,

praise and peace be upon him, 3My son, if you can refrain from

holding a grudge in your heart from morning to e'ening, then

do so4 $e then added, 3My son, that is part of my propheticway. Whosoe'er re'i'es my way has lo'ed me, and whosoe'er

lo'es me is with me in the ?arden4 @Atturmu-i BCDE

f a person possesses this 0ne Fuality, then he has perfect lo'e

for Allah and $is Messenger. f he is found to be slightly lacking

in this Fuality then his lo'e is imperfect, but not de'oid of it.

/he proof of this is found in the saying of the Prophet, praise

and peace be upon him, when a person faced punishment forimbibing. As the person was about to recei'e his punishment a

man cursed the oGender, whereupon the Prophet, praise and

peace be upon him, said, %"o not curse him. $e lo'es Allah and

    $is Messenger.% @Albukhari BCDHE

Another sign is that one mentions the Prophet, praise and peacebe upon him, in abundance whosoe'er lo'es something, it shall

    constantly recur upon his tongue.

Another sign is yearning to meet the Prophet, praise and peace

be upon him. I'ery lo'er yearns to be with their belo'ed.

1226 When the tribe of Ash&arites approached Medina, they

were heard chanting, %/omorrow, we will meet those we lo'e,

    Muhammad and his +ompanions*%

1227 And what )ilal did say before.

122 >Ammar did say the same thing before being martyred.

122! and the story of halid bn Ma=daan that we ha'e

    mentioned.

Another sign is that as well as the remembrance of the Prophet,

praise and peace be upon him, someone who lo'es him will befound praising and respecting him whene'er he is mentioned

and display humility, and lower himself when he hears his

    name.

saac At!/u2ibi, told us that after the passing of the Prophet,

praise and peace be upon him, whene'er the +ompanions

heard his name they became humble, their skin trembled and

they wept. As for the other followers of the Prophet, praise andpeace be upon him, some e1perienced the same out of lo'e and

yearning for him, whereas others did so out of respect and

    esteem.

Another sign is the lo'e e1pressed for the Prophet, praise and

peace be upon him, and the People of his $ouse, and his

    +ompanions. /he Imigrants JMuha2irunK and the $elpers

JAnsarK alike for his sake. A person with this sign will be found

hostile to those who hate them.

1230 egarding Al $asan and Al $ussain, may Allah be

pleased with them, the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him,

    said, 3O Allah, lo'e them, so please lo'e them.4 @Atturmu-i

1231 Al!$asan said that the Prophet, praise and peace be

upon him, also said, %O Allah, lo'e him, so lo'e the one who

    lo'es him.% @Albukhari 7, Muslim 7E

1232 Of his two grandsons, the Prophet, praise and peace be

upon him, also said, 3Whosoe'er lo'es them, lo'es me and

    Whose'er lo'es me, lo'es Allah. Whosoe'er hates them hates

    me and whosoe'er hates me hates Allah4 @bn Ma2ah 75E

1233 /he Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, said, 3O

Allah, Allah, my +ompanions. "o not make them targets after

me* Whosoe'er lo'es them lo'es them because they lo'e me,

and whosoe'er hates them it is through their hatred of me.

Whosoe'er harms them, harms me. Whosoe'er does something

to hurt me does it is as if it is hurtful to Allah. Whosoe'er does

something that appears to be hurtful to Allah is about to be

    sei-ed. 4 @Atturmu-i 5DB, AhmedJDCNKE

1234 /he Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, said

referring to Lady ;atima, may Allah be pleased with her, 3#he is

    a part of me, whosoe'er hates her, hates me.4 @Albukhari 5C7,

123" /he Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, told Lady

Ayesha 3lo'e Osama bn Zaid because do lo'e him.4

    @Atturmu-i 5D7DE

1236 /he Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, spoke of

the $elpers JAnsarK saying, 3/he sign of certain faith is lo'e for

the Ansar, whereas the sign of hypocrisy is hatred for them.4

    @Albukhari 7C, Muslim CE

1237 bn Omar tells us that the Prophet, praise and peace be

upon him, said, 3Whosoe'er lo'es the Arabs lo'es them

    5/67

because he lo'es me. Whereas whosoe'er hates them, hates

them because of their hatred for me.4

/he fact is when someone lo'es another, he lo'es e'erything

that person lo'es, and this was indeed the case with the+ompanions.

123 When Anas saw the Prophet, praise and peace be upon

him, eating a piece of pumpkin, he said, 3;rom that day lo'ed

    pumpkins4 @Albukhari H9, Muslim H7E

    123! Al $asan bn >Ali, went with >Abd Allah bn >Abbas and

    >Abd Allah bn :afar to #alma and asked her to prepare some

food the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, used to like.

1240 Omar once saw the Prophet, praise and peace be upon

him, wearing a pair of yellow colored sandals, so he too wore a

pair of the same color. @Albukhari 8D87, Muslim 77DCE

Another sign is hatred of anyone who hates Allah and $is

Messenger, praise and peace be upon him. #uch people are

those who show hostility towards Allah and $is Messenger,

praise and peace be upon him. )elie'ers ha'ing this sign a'oidall those who oppose the prophetic way, and are in opposition

to those who introduce inno'ations into the prophetic way Jthat

are against the spirit of slamK and 0nd the law he established

burdensome. Allah says, 3"ou shall nd no nation believing in

Allah and the #ast $ay loving anyone that o!!oses Allah and

    %is Messenger4 8D6.

$is +ompanions killed their lo'ed ones to please him. And theyfought against their fathers and sons.

1241 Abd Allah bn Abd Allah bn bay said to the prophet 3f

you want, bring to you his head Jhe means his father=sK

1242 Another sign is found in those who lo'e the uran which

the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, brought, by which

the Prophet and they were guided. When asked about the

Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, Lady Ayesha, may Allahbe pleased with her, said, %$is character was that of the uran.%

  • 7/25/2019 Ashifa quadi iyad for muhammed pbuh

    6/67

Part of the lo'e of the uran is listening to its recitation, acting

according to it, understanding it, keeping within its bounds and

the lo'e of Prophet Muhammad&s way.

#ahl, bn Abdullah spoke of this sign saying, %/he sign of lo'ingAllah is lo'e of the uran. /he sign of lo'ing the uran is the

lo'e of the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him. /he sign of

lo'ing the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, is lo'e of his

prophetic way. /he sign of lo'ing the prophetic way is the lo'e

of the $ereafter. /he sign of lo'ing the $ereafter is hatred for

this world. /he sign of hatred for this world is that you do not

amass any of it e1cept for pro'isions and what you need to

arri'e safely with in the $ereafter.%

bn Masood said, %o one needs to ask himself about anything

other than the uran, if he lo'es the uran then he lo'es Allah

and $is Messenger% praise and peace be upon him.

Another sign of lo'e for the Prophet, praise and peace be upon

him, is to ha'e mercy on his nation by ad'ising them well,

stri'ing for the betterment of their interest and remo'ing

anything that is harmful from them in the same way that theProphet, praise and peace be upon him, was 3gentle and

    merciful to the believers&967D.

Another sign of perfect lo'e is found in whosoe'er restricts

himself through self!denial, preferring po'erty to the attractions

    of the world.

1244 /he Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, told Abu

#a&id Al hudri, 3Po'erty for those of you who lo'e me QowsFuicker than a Qood from a mountain&s peak to its base4

124" A man came to the Prophet, praise and peace be upon

him, and said, %O Messenger of Allah, lo'e you.% /he Prophet,

praise and peace be upon him, warned, 3)e careful of what you

say4 /he man repeated his lo'e for him thrice, whereupon the

Prophet, praise and peace be upon him told him, 3f you lo'eme prepare yourself Fuickly for po'erty4 @Atturmu-i 58HE

Partition The realit# and meaning of

    loving the Prophet

/here are multiple opinions about what constitutes the lo'e ofAllah and $is Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, and there

are numerous narrati'es about it, howe'er the reality is that it

is not the dissimilarity of the narrati'es but the diGerence in

    conditions.

#ufyan said, and perhaps he was thinking of the words of Allah

that say, 3If you love Allah, follow me4 5657 %Lo'e consists of

following the Messenger of Allah% praise and peace be upon

    him.

#cholars ha'e said6 %Lo'e of the Messenger, praise and peace

be upon him, is to belie'e in his 'ictory, to protect and obey his

prophetic way, and being fearful of opposition to it.%

And others said %Lo'e is the constant remembrance of the

    belo'ed.%

And another one said %t is about preferring the belo'ed.%

And some said %Lo'e is the heart that follows the will of its

master, he lo'es what he lo'es and hates what he hates.%

And some said %Lo'e is the harmonious inclination of the heart

    to the belo'ed.%

Most of these opinions indicate to the fruits of lo'e rather than

the reality of lo'e. /he reality of lo'e is the inclination to whatone 0nds agreeable and harmonious either by the pleasure of

its perfection, such as the lo'e of beautiful appearances,

melodic tones, delicious food and be'erages, all of which one

inclines naturally to because they are agreeable. And 0nding

pleasure in the perfection of noble inner Fualities which is

e1perienced by the intellect as well as the heart, such as the

lo'e for scholars of slam, people with upright natures whose

li'es and deeds are e1emplary. t is natural for a person toincline to a passionate form of lo'e for such things almost to the

  • 7/25/2019 Ashifa quadi iyad for muhammed pbuh

    8/67

e1treme. A person can lo'e something on account of 0nding it

agreeable to him by reason of recei'ing its bene0t and

blessings. t is a natural disposition to lo'e what one 0nds to be

    good.

Once these three approaches ha'e been understood, relate

these three causes to the lo'e of the Prophet, praise and peace

be upon him, and disco'er that these three characteristics

inspiring lo'e are also applicable to him.

/he beauties of his physic, e1ternal appearance and his perfect

character ha'e already been discussed so there is no necessity

    to mention them again.

We ha'e already mentioned the bene0ts and blessings the

nation of Prophet Muhammad, praise and peace be upon him,

recei'es. And we ha'e also mentioned the attributes of Allah

with which he was blessed and through which mankind bene0ts

such as the compassion he has for his nation, his mercy

towards us, his guidance, tenderness towards us and his

struggle to sa'e us from the ;ire. Allah described $is Prophet,

praise and peace be upon him, saying, 3'e have not sent youece!t as a mercy to all the worlds4 67HC, and 3 *ro!het,

'e have sent you as a witness, a bearer of glad tidings, and to

bear warning; a caller to Allah by %is !ermission and as a light

shedding lam!4 5568!B. And, 3It is %e who has raised among

the illiterate, a Messenger from themselves, to recite to them

%is verses, to !urify them and to teach them the +oo and the

    'isdom4 B6. Also, 3and guides them to a Straight *ath& 867B.

/here cannot be any goodness worthier or of greater

importance than the goodness found in the Prophet, praise and

peace be upon him, for belie'ers. /here is no other fa'or that

could be more uni'ersally bene0cial and of greater ad'antage

than his blessing to all Muslims because he is our path to

guidance. $e is the one who rescues us from the error of our

blindness. $e is the one who calls us to success and honor* $e

is our path to our Lord and our intercessor. $e is the one who

will speak on our behalf and bear witness for us and bring us,

Allah willing, to the I'erlasting Life with its happiness*

t should now be clear to you dear reader, that the lo'e of the

Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, is obligatory on accountof the authentic Fuotations we ha'e brought to you in which we

related the nature of his o'erQowing goodness and uni'ersal

beauty. f a person can lo'e a person on account of his

generosity towards him once or twice during his life, or that he

sa'es him from danger or harm e'en once, then what of a

person who gi'es him unending happiness and protects him for

    the e'erlasting punishment of $ell( /hat person deser'es

    greater lo'e*

A king is lo'ed when his conduct is good and a ruler is lo'ed

when his conduct is upright. I'en if a knowledgeable person or

a person of noble character li'es far away he will be lo'ed on

this account. )ut when someone possess all the perfection of

these Fualities, that person is more entitled to be lo'ed and

    more deser'ing of attachment*

1246 mam Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, described theProphet, praise and peace be upon him, saying, %Whosoe'er

+ommentators say that if people are sincerely true to Allah and

$is Messenger, praise and peace be upon him, then they are

    sincere Muslims secretly and openly.

124 /he :udge and slamic 2urist Abu AlWalid, told us Abu"auod told us that /he Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be

upon him, stressed three times, 3/he religion is acti'e ad'ice4

    $is +ompanions asked, %/o whom, O Messenger of Allah(% $e

replied, 3/o Allah and $is )ook, $is Messenger and Muslim

leaders, and the ordinary man4 @Abu "auod 9, Muslim 88E

An imam commented that this is an obligation.

mam Abu #ulayman Al )usti said, %Ad'ice is a word used todesignate the desire for the ob2ect of what is good. t is not

possible to e1plain it with 2ust a single word capable of

containing all its meanings. Linguistically, it is based on sincere

    care.%

Abu )akr, Abi saac&s son e1plained, %Ad'ice is deli'ering the

outcome of the ad'ice of something that is righteous and

    harmonious.%

Ad'ice in reference to Allah and for $is #ake is to deli'er 0rm

belief in $is Oneness, describing Allah in the way in which Allah

describes $imself, and disconnecting Allah from $is attributes

as described in the dictionary of human beha'ior. t is the desire

for what Allah lo'es, a'oidance of what Allah hates and

    sincerity in worshipping Allah.

Ad'ice in reference to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peacebe upon him, is the deli'ery of the aRrmation of his prophet

hood and obedience to him in whate'er he commands or

    forbids.

Ad'ice in reference to the )ook of Allah is to deli'er belief in it,

act in accordance to it, it=s 0ne recitation, humility on account

of it, and esteem for it. t is also its understanding and seeking

2urisprudence therein as well as protecting it from the

misinterpretation of e1tremists and the assault of heretics.

  • 7/25/2019 Ashifa quadi iyad for muhammed pbuh

Abu )akr said, %t is to support, help and protect the Prophet,

praise and peace be upon him, in both life and after death. t is

to re'i'e his prophetic way by seeking, protecting and

spreading it and adopting his noble characteristics and

    manners.

Of the obligations of the heart, Ahmad, Muhammad&s son said

that it is one of the obligations of the heart to deli'er ad'ice for

the sake of the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon

    him.

"uring the life time of the Prophet, praise and peace be upon

him, the deli'ery of the ad'ice of his +ompanions was to help

him, protect him, oppose his enemies, obey him and spend their

li'es and property stri'ing to ser'e him, and this can be noticed

in these words of Allah, 3Among the believers there are men

who have been true to their covenant with Allah4 5565. 3"ou

shall believe in Allah and %is Messenger and struggle for %is

'ay with your !ossessions and yourselves% B7677.

/he deli'ery of ad'ice of Muslims for the sake of the Prophet,

praise and peace be upon him, after his death is to ensure thathis esteem is maintained, to show respect and great lo'e for

him. #tri'e to learn from his prophetic way, understand his

    2urisprudence, lo'e his family and +ompanions. A'oid

whatsoe'er he disliked and hate whate'er de'iates from his

prophetic way and being watchful for its occurrence. t is to

ha'e mercy for his nation, the seeking of knowledge of his

character, his life and ethics, and being steadfast in its

application. ;rom this one reali-es that the deli'ery of ad'ice isone of the fruits of lo'e of the Prophet, praise and peace be

upon him, as well as being amongst its signs.

124! mam Abu&l asim Al ushayri said that Amr bn Al

heroism and known as As #aGar, was seen in a 'ision and

the Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and 'enerate him and

grant him peace, so that might come to his assistance and

help him. t was because of this that Allah forga'e me.%

/o Muslims the deli'ery of ad'ice is to obey their mams when

they order with truth. t is also to help them, remind them of the

truth in the best manner, draw their attention to matters they

o'erlook and also to the aGairs of Muslims of which they are

unaware. One should neither attack them nor cause them

trouble, or bring about dissension amongst the people, or

    alienate them from the people.

Ad'ice for the sake of the ordinary Muslim is to deli'er it for

their best interest and guide them to it. t is to assist them in

matters of their religion and this world not only by speech but

through action. t is to warn those who are heedless, inform the

ignorant, and gi'e to the needy. t is the concealment of their
