There have been numerous times when God has reached out to us and we did not respond because we were too consumed by other interests. Cable and satellite television has just about removed the guesswork from television reception but, even still, there are differences in clarity between channels. This is another parable of life – the transmission of the picture is powerful and clear at the tower; the problem lies in our ability to receive it. All of God’s efforts to communicate with us have encountered the same difficulties. The transmission of his grace and mercy and love is powerful and clear at the source, but we are often unable to receive it because of our own weakness or indifference. The message of love may come in much clearer to my neighbor down the street if his heart is tuned right and mine is not. The transmission is there all right. Everything we do at church is intended to sharpen the focus of God’s will upon our lives. Be sure to tune in. --Tresco E. Shannon

You Can’t Win Them All

The first caller was not very convincing and I took it to be a joke. After a number of other calls with the same message, I began to take note. Apparently I had lost $225 because I was not listening to a certain radio station that Sunday afternoon. That’s the breaks of the game. My luck, I call it. At the very moment they were calling my name to award $225 to me, I was intently following on television the closing moments of a football game from Texas Stadium. It is not the first time, and probably not the last, when I have been distracted and missed an unexpected blessing.

Almighty God, who art rich in mercy to all those who call upon thee; hear us, we beseech thee, as we confess our sins before thee. We confess that we are not worthy to be called thy children; yet do thou in mercy keep us as thine own. Grant us true repentance, and forgive us all our sins; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Matthew 6: 19-25 NT p. 6

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
