What is Faith?

“YOU’RE NOT GOING TO tell us you believe in angels?” someone inquired, in a class that I was teaching. I then told the class to write one line naming something significant they had experienced in the last two weeks.

One said, “I had a difficult task to perform, but somehow I found the courage to do it.” Another

volunteered, “I wasn’t sure I was going to make it through the week with mid-term exams and all, but I did!” A third said, “Over the weekend I had a flash of insight that helped me decide what to do next year.”

“That’s interesting,” I commented. “It appears that we all have lost our memories. We have

forgotten what God said to our forebears. It’s in the Twenty-third chapter of Exodus, if you want to look it up. God said, “I am sending you an angel to enlighten you, to guard you on the way, to lead you to the place I have prepared for you. Be attentive to your angels; listen for your angel’s

voice!’ What we need to have is faith,” They didn’t understand what faith is.

Then I told them a tale about a man who was a confessed smuggler. Every day he crossed the border with his donkey loaded with hay. The border guards knew he was smuggling and searched him and his donkey but found nothing. The man became wealthy. At thirty he retired and threw a

party for the border guards. They asked him, “What have you been smuggling?” He responded, “Donkeys!”

Someone’s hand shot up and they said, “Faith is seeing!”

“Yes,” I responded. “If you don’t expect to see angels, you don’t see them. If people do not believe in God, it is because anything that might be perceived to point to the activity of God is

either ignored, filtered out or said to point to something else.

“Faith is seeing!”

Ashland United Methodist Church An Order for the Worship of God

Second Sunday of Easter April 28, 2019 11:00 A.M. The Chiming of the Hour

The Lighting of Altar Candles Call to Worship “Only Believe” Paul Rader

*The Hymn of Praise “Easter People, Raise Your Voices” UMH p. 304

*Invocation The Prayer of Confession (to be prayed by all)

O God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against thee and are not worthy to be called thy children. We have forsaken thy way, and walked in the light of our own eyes. We have not loved thee with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not had the mind of Christ. We have grieved the Holy Spirit. We have been conformed to this world which passeth away. We have not endured as seeing him who Is invisible. Forgive us, we beseech thee, most merciful Father, and renew us again in the strength of thy grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Prayer for Pardon and The Lord’s Prayer The Anthem Minister: O Lord, open thou our lips. People: And our mouths shall show forth thy praise. Minister: Praise ye the Lord. People: The Lord’s name be praised. *The Psalter “Psalm 150” UMH p. 862

Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

John 20: 19-31 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Update on Book Fair Donations

Ashland is once again seeking to raise funds to buy each child at Seven Oaks a book at the book fair. The cost of a voucher for one child is $6.00. The cost to sponsor a class is $100. To date, we have collected $2,430. This is 68% of the goal of $3,600. Payments should be made to Ashland church, marked “book fair”. We hope to conclude the fundraising by the end of April. Excess funds will be given to the teachers to buy books for their individual class libraries. Thanks for helping with this worthwhile project.
