When did you last go to the grocery store and have the checker bag your groceries without asking for money? Your mortgage company asks for money with unfailing regularity. Every month I get a collection of assorted bills but not one of them is from the church. Who withholds a percentage of every dollar you earn? Your Uncle does that. Your Heavenly Father does not. Myth #2: “There is no free lunch.” There is at the church. You can attend worship every week…there is no admission charge. If you are sick, the minister will visit you in the hospital. Free counseling is offered to those who need it. You can receive a printed bulletin each week and never is there a subscription notice “asking for money” as with other publications. What will you do when a loved one dies? The funeral home will certainly have to charge for its services; the church will not. We can make full use of the church and never pay one dime. No one will ever know whether you contribute or not. The church requires no membership fee, no annual dues. The truth: The truth is that the church asks for money less than any other organization I can think of. Yet, of them all, nothing is more important than the church. Ashland United Methodist Church will continue to provide ministry in Jesus’ name to everyone whether they contribute or not. ~Tresco E. Shannon

TWO MYTHS AND THE TRUTH Myth #1: “The church is always asking for money.”

This simply is not true; it is the world which is always asking for money. When did you last go to

the grocery store and have the checker bag your groceries without asking for money? Your mortgage company asks for money with unfailing regularity.

Every month I get a collection of assorted bills but not one of them is from the church. Who

withholds a percentage of every dollar you earn? Your Uncle does that. Your Heavenly Father does not.

Myth #2: “There is no free lunch.” There is at the church. You can attend worship every week…there is no admission charge. If you are sick, the minister will visit you in the hospital. Free counseling is offered to those who need

it. You can receive a printed bulletin each week and never is there a subscription notice “asking for money” as with other publications.

What will you do when a loved one dies? The funeral home will certainly have to charge for its services; the church will not.

We can make full use of the church and never pay one dime. No one will ever know whether you

contribute or not.

Welcome!

Please sign the friendship pad when it is passed to you and pass it to your neighbor.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Doxology Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Today’s Scripture Mark 10: 13-31

Pew Bible NT p. 46

People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.’” He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” They were greatly astounded and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.” Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

Meetings on “A Way Forward” The 2106 General Conference of the Methodist Church created the Commission on "A Way Forward" to examine and suggest possible revisions to the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and to explore options that help maintain and strengthen the unity of the church. The Council of Bishops will submit a report to the Special Session of the General Conference in 2019 that includes three plans for a way forward considered by the Commission. Church Council is presenting two informational meetings regarding "A Way Forward" on Sunday, October 21st at 2:00 and 5:00 in Ashland Hall. Herman Lightsey will provide a brief description of the three plans (Traditionalist, One Church, and the Connectional Conference Plans), the process for consideration of the plans at the 2019 General Conference, and how you can make your thoughts and concerns known regarding the plans. We anticipate the presentation will last approximately 30 minutes.
