Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology?

Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade.

Technology and social media are becoming a distraction and addiction to humans.

Although technology and social media have good points, the dependency with their use has attacked human interaction and the continuity of personal communication.

Human Communication

Page 4: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Social media has effected society. Many people do not know how to

communicate face-to-face due to social media.

Decrease in face-to-face interaction.

Wrong Ways of Communication

Page 6: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Communication over social media loses real meaning of a relationship you may have built with someone.

Paul Booth, Assistant Professor of Media and Cinema studies, states, "We may rely on the weak connections we're making on social media more than on the strong connections we're making face-to-face" (quoted in Keller 1).

Page 7: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

People tend to be more comfortable communicating through a screen.

Giving out personal information is a definite NO.

Page 8: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Due to social media and technology, society has become more social with each other, but only through a screen.

Booth also states, "studies have shown that people actually are becoming more social and more interactive with others, but the style of that communication has changed so that we're not meeting face-to-face as often as we used to" (quoted in Keller 1).

Impact of Media & Technology on Children

Page 10: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

According to an article called Children and Watching TV, “Children in the United States watch an average of three to four hours of television a day. By the time of high school graduation, they will have spent more time watching television than they have in the classroom (“Children and Watching TV” 1).

Too much time focused on television may cause unwanted weight gain, lower grades, and less reading and exercise.

Too much media attention can affect a child's attention span and ability to focus.

Impact of Media & Technology on Teenagers

Page 13: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Media technologies greatly consume teenagers. Teens have become so caught up in their online

appearance via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Page 14: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Many teens nowadays are mainly concerned about how many likes they can get on a Facebook post or an Instagram picture, & how many retweets or favorites they can get on a tweet on Twitter.

The “Selfie” Generation

Page 16: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Selfie- a picture taken of oneself, often shared through social media.

Though many take part in this trend, something as simple as a selfie may lead to depression and self-harm due to wanting to get that “perfect” selfie.

Poor self-esteem. Many will continue to take a selfie until they

get one that they like.

Page 17: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Example: In his article, Steven Woda states, “ Earlier

this year a teen from the UK became obsessed with taking the perfect selfie. He dropped out of school, lost thirty pounds, and didn’t leave the house for six months because he was devoting ten or more hours a day to taking pictures. Eventually, he attempted suicide by overdose” (Woda).

Communication Gone Wrong

Page 19: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Main forms of communication back in the day were through writing letters and sending them through the mail, talking in person, or actually talking on the telephone with another person.

Nowadays communication is mainly done through a phone or computer.

Parents

Page 22: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Parents are the number one reason children are the way they are when it comes to technology.

Though many parents have concerns about violation of privacy, inappropriate sexual behavior, cyber bullying, and identity theft/fraud, most parents don’t do anything about it.

Page 23: Ashley Neuman. Are you or have you ever been distracted by media or technology? Technology and social have rapidly grown within the past decade

Parents should◦ limit the amount of time their children have to

watch television and encourage them to

◦ watch the right shows for their age◦ get out and get involved with a hobby or a sport.
