This year's race marks 10glorious years of the staging ofthis inspiring and remarkable
10km run through the heart ofcentral London, on a course that willbe partly used for the 2012 Olympicmarathons which will also passmany of London's truly world classhistoric landmarks.
Each year the number ofparticipating runners (includingOlympic, World and Europeanchampions) and charities increases.More importantly, the amounts ofmoney raised by participants andcharities taking part in the British 10kLondon Run also increases.
more money for charitiesIt is now estimated that the British10k London Run provides theplatform on which up to £3 millionis raised each year. This is especiallyheartening given that no charity ispenalised or fleeced by beingcharged more than members of thepublic to take part. It is worth
pointing out that there has not beena penny increase in the cost of entryto charities since the event was firststaged in 2001 despite increasedstaging costs. It is a also a sad factworth noting again that the onlyoposition to the creation andcontinual staging of The British 10kLondon Run continues to come fromfull and part time employees of theLondon Marathon Limited. Not onlyhave they failed to prevent the racefrom being staged but attempts toundermine it have also failed. It is inno one’s interest, including charities,to have one limited companymonopolising the sport in London.
10th Anniversary YearSporting politics aside, within this10th anniversary issue we look backat some of the remarkable events ofboth national and global signifcancewhich the British 10k London Runhas been part of. As for the future, with London's hosting of the 2012Olympic Games just around thecorner there is much to look
forward to over the next few years inthe continual establishment ofLondon's greatest 10km run. Thisyear we welcome for the first timethe mounted band of the Blues andRoyals to perform the openingceremony on Piccadilly.
Finally, one thing is for certain:neither Union Jack Sports Ltd northe British 10k London Run will beintimidated, bullied or underminedby anyone. Nor will the race be usedas a vehicle to penalise charitiestaking part as they all have aguarantee that there will be noincrease in the cost of their placesthrough to 2013, which covers boththe build up and legacy period ofLondon hosting the world’s largestsporting event.

Help for Heroes was launched in October2007 and has since raised over £40 millionto provide direct, practical support forwounded Servicemen and women.
Our message is simple, H4H does not seekto be critical or political, we simply want tohelp by asking everyone to do their bit toraise money. Once that money is raised wego to the experts in the Army, Royal Navyand Royal Air Force for guidance as to howbest to spend it. It is our intention to spendall we raise on the practical, direct supportof those wounded in the service of ourcountry since 9/11.
We don’t like to sit on money which hasbeen raised, we prefer to get it out to helpas soon as possible. The ethos is: Money In,Money Out and to date over £34 million has been spent on, or allocated to, facilitiesor services that will improve the lives ofthose who are wounded in the service ofthe country.
Our latest appeal, “The Launch pad to Life”fund has enabled H4H to grant £20 millionto help build four Recovery Centres wherethe wounded can live while they preparefor the next phase of their lives, whetherthat is in the Services or civilian life. Thecentres are planned for the garrisontowns of Colchester, Catterick, Tidworth and Edinburgh where aPathfinder Centre opened in the summer of 2009.
Good luck to everyone running in the racetoday, we hope you enjoy your run andyou’re not put off running for life! A bigthank you must go to everyone who haschosen to support H4H in their run. We appreciate everything you have all done on our behalf especially the long hours inthe gym training for the run, arranging themany imaginative and exciting events usedto raise money and of course completingthe run itself. We are hugely grateful to allof you and we hope you have enjoyed theexperience of raising money for our blokes,
the men and women of the armedforces.

Medical Advice
Guidelines forrunnersPreparations...As always, a sensible approachneeds to be taken to all distancerunning especially with regard totraining, which will be different foreach person. The first thing to do if you are nota club or experienced runner is tohave a medical with your GP toascertain if it is sensible for you totake part in the event and if giventhe all clear, to then start buildingup your exercise regime at leastsix months prior to the event.
Medical ConditionsIf you have a medical conditionand your Doctor still says that youcan compete in a long distancerun then it is sensible to inform therace organiser of your pre-existingcondition so that in the event ofyou becoming ill during the race, the medical team can be madeaware of your pre-existingcondition. If you have a ‘medicalert’ bracelet, then make sure youwear it for the race.
NutritionNutrition plays a part in fitness andcarbohydrate ‘loading’ canenhance running performance byallowing the competitor to run atoptimal pace for a longer periodbefore fatiguing. For the well-trained runner, this may beachieved by tapering exercise overthe final days before the race andensuring carbohydrate intakes of10-12 g/kg/day over the 36-48hours prior to the race. Sportsnutrition guidelines recommendthe runner consumes sufficientamounts of carbohydrates topromote restoration of muscleglycogen between trainingsessions.

The British Red Cross will be onhand to help you with any injuryor illness. Please find the nearestRed Cross first aider if you needsupport.
On race day, warming up isessential prior to the event so tryand keep warm outer clothing onuntil the last minute.
Don’t forget towarm up!
TOP TIP!
After the raceJust as important as warming up is warming down at the end of your run.The most dangerous period for any runner is the twenty minute period atthe end of the event, and it is essential that you do not just stop at the end,but keep moving around, a little jogging, then walk for enough time foryour body to adjust to the completion of the event. You must keep up yourfluid levels before, during and at the end of the event, and eat a power baror similar when you can at the end. Allow an hour or so before having alarge meal, it is better to eat a little and often for the first six hoursfollowing the event.
The Household Cavalry Museum is unlike any other military museum because it offers a unique ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at the work that goes into the ceremonial duties and operational role of The Household Cavalry.
A LIVING MUSEUM Located in one of the most historic buildings in the city of London, Horse Guards has guarded the main entrance to the Royal residences and has been home to The Household Cavalry for more than 300 years.
The story of The Household Cavalry is brought to life through the words, memories, and stunning collections
of those who have served in it’s ranks. Through modern interactive displays, hear first hand accounts of their preparation for the great ceremonial occasions and their modern day fighting role as an armoured reconnaissance regiment.

The end of 2007 brought with it the sad news of the death of Vic Navarra, aged 55. Vic’s involvement in the British 10K London Run began in 2002when he led a team of New York firefighters who ran the race to raise fundsfor the victims of the 9/11 attack. He then went on to become involved inmanaging the race start and the baggage storage facilities.
In 2001, after the attack on the World Trade Centre, Vic volunteered to helphis colleagues in the Fire Department with the rescue efforts at GroundZero. It was during this time that Vic was exposed to airborne toxins towhich he attributed the disease that finally claimed his life.
