During my recent visit to the Velankanni Shrine, I had an interesting experience.
I was in the queue for purchasing a water bottle to collect some „holy water‟ from
the historic pond area where Mother Mary had appeared to the poor lame boy
selling buttermilk. There were 2 little kids, a boy and his sister just ahead of me.
They were around 5 or 6 years of age and were from some poor family. When their
turn came, the girl gave Rs.20/- to the lady staff in the sales counter and said „Akka,
give us two bottles‟. The staff replied to the little girl saying that the cost of one
bottle was Rs.14 and hence she could have one bottle and take back the balance of
six rupees. The girl very causally told her „it is O.K., but please give us 2 bottles, we
have no money to pay for two bottles - Matha will bless you!” The staff replied, “I
can‟t do that, I will lose my job - they will send me back home.” To this, the little
boy said, “it is alright, but give us 2 bottles….” The staff was angry and shouted,
“Do you want me to lose my job?” At this point, I intervened from behind to make
sure that they could have 2 bottles without further altercation! I was overwhelmed
to see the joy of these children when they received 2 bottles as requested by them
persistently!
During the rest of my stay at the Shrine, this incident came to my mind again and
again. This incident taught me many lessons - but the most interesting lesson was
„the absolute confidence of the children that they will get two bottles for Rs.20
instead of Rs.28‟! They knew that Our Lady would give it to them - their trust and
unshakeable faith opened the door to obtaining what they were asking for! For
them, miracles are part of their firm trust in God and Mother Mary. For us, miracles
are jackpots and far from reality! All the Saints, especially our founder had such a
childlike trust in the Lord and in His Divine Mother! I left the Shrine wiser, learning
a bit more how to pray and knowing the true meaning of „Childlike Trust in the
Lord‟!

A warm Seasonal Greetings to All the Readers of TIME from Brindavana Montfort
Belagola.
“…The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it,
but bruises and sores and raw wounds…” (Is. 1: 5 – 6)
The above quotation from Isaiah describes the condition of Humanity which prompted the
Father to send His only Begotten Son as the physician for this sick and ailing mankind.
Jesus, the Physician prescribes Fasting, Prayer, Self denial and almsgiving as medicine.
Through Fasting, the body is brought under subjection to the soul. Through prayer, one‟s
life is brought under subjection to God and His will. Self denial strengthens the soul.
Through almsgiving, earthly possessions are brought under subjection to Charity. The
Season of Lent invites us to practise the medicines prescribed by Jesus the Physician for
the wholeness and Spiritual Healing.
We are happy to share with the readers the recent happenings in this part of our Province.
Twenty one CBSE students began their public exams on 3rd
March. The Class X students
(Hearing impaired) will begin their exams on 30th

gave hearing aids to many of them. These hearing

these children.

fact that each one is called to be a light at home, school and neighbourhood. No play was
recorded. Hence, these were very much appreciated by the parents and the invitees. The

2015 in Sampurna Montfort College started on an energetic and bustling note with just the
right balance of studies and fun. It began with a light trajectory of sports activities like
carom, basketball, throw ball
which carried on throughout the
month of February. All the staff
and students were divided into four
groups namely: Kesari Bath,
Gliders, Gluteus Maximus and
Arions each with their distinct and
humorous cheer and gusto. The Sports activities concluded with the final piece de
resistance: Sports day 2015, held on 21st February. The winners „Gluteus Maximus‟ won a
tough, though close fight against Kesari Bath who acquired second place. It was intriguing
to watch how focused and serious one can get holding a plastic cricket bat in hand. The
Sports day ended on an informal note on the basketball court with a quick, calculated
battle of chaotic thrill of a water balloon fight .
The blood donation camp was the next
event in the month of February
conducted by Victoria Hospital. Out of
the 50 students who volunteered, only
30 including the faculty, were able to
donate blood. The process began
around 10 am and went on till 1:30pm
that day.
The participants were given
refreshments by the hospital soon after they had donated blood. It was also nice to note the
motivational flyers on donating blood, inside the college premises so that people were
aware of what was going on in the college. Those who donated blood were given a
certificate too by the hospital.
Finally, we entered into the month of March with the Women‟s day celebration held in the
college on March 6th
. The male students and faculty carried out an adorably thoughtful
show for all the Montfort women, with a message board on which one could write
personal messages lauding the wonderful women in the college. There was lovely art work
displayed in front of one of the entrances to the lawn, games and competitions and of
course inspiring quotes by famous women all over the college. It ended on an
overwhelming note with a talk by Prof. Suryarekha, our senior faculty who was the guest
of honor for the day. A was a soulful performance by Anthony Aravind of 1st year MLCU
and a lighthearted play by the scarce, young men of first and second year BU and MLCU.

Every woman was greeted with a rose and a personalized

The School belongs to the Estates of the Catholic Diocese of Pondichery,
Hawthrone Estate and Honey Rock Estate and is situated in Craigmore, San
Jose Estate of Pondicherry Diocese. The Estate manager was a French Priest
and our Provincial at that time was French too. Being French, he had to
comply with the request of the French priest and send a Brother to be the
Headmaster of the School. I happened to be the victim.
On July 6, 1956, Bro. Baptist, Principal of Montfort School, Yercaud took me to
Craigmore and showed me the school. He also introduced me to Rev.Fr.Massot, the
manager of San Jose Estate and took me to Honey Rock Estate where 1 was to live as
Headmaster of the school, All the rooms in Honey Rock Estate Bungalow were occupied
by Brothers and hence Bro.Othon told me that I had to share a room with Mr.Faucheux
(Bro. Martin de Vectoue, one of the three Brothers who were the pioneers of the Indian
mission.) On 6th
night, 1 shared the room with Mr. Faucheux, and slept till 4 o' clock in the
morning when I heard Mr.Faucheux shouting "oho" very loudly. Though he was not the
Local Superior of the Community, he was acting like one. When he got up, he came to my
bed and asked me to go with him to the washroom for my ablutions in his presence. I
requested him that I would go after him. Reluctantly, he agreed. The same morning after
breakfast, I told Bro.Othon, the Local Superior that I would go to Craigmore School from
Montfort, Yercaud until a room was prepared for me in Honey Rock.
When I became the Headmaster of the school, the classes were conducted in two sheds.
The sheds were used to accommodate the cattle of San Jose Estate at night and hold
classes for the Estate children during the day. In the morning the cowherd would take the
cattle for grazing. The Headmaster and the two teachers were responsible for the cleaning
of the sheds. Every day, the sheds had to be washed. Till the floor was dry, classes were to
be held under trees. These two sheds were below the dispensary and the Convent of the

French Grey Sisters from Pondicherry. Rev.Fr.Massot, the manager of San Jose Estate and
the correspondent of the School was a good and considerate man. 1 persuaded him in
course of time to build a building for the school. When he started the construction
Fr.Lafrenez, the manager of Balmade's Estate and the manager of High Field Estate
(Highfield belonged to Salem Diocese) wanted the verandah of the school on the back side
of the building and not facing the road. I was adamant that the verandah should face the
road. Finally, the French priests said that all of us would go together to Montfort
School,Yercaud, meet Bro.Eleazer and act according to his decision.
When we went to Montfort, Bro.Eleazer was chatting with His Grace Mathias, the
Archbishop of Madras - Mylapore. The priests were very happy to meet another French
person and that too an eminent Archbishop. We conveyed our problems to both of them
and the priests started speaking in French. The Archbishop didn't like that and told them,
"1 am afraid whether Brother Edwin (Abraham) understands what you say in French".
Even afterwards they continued to speak in French. The Archbishop supported my plan as
the verandah facing the road would be useful and beautiful. The priests agreed and the
verandah was built facing the road. Thus the school was shifted to the present site with the
building having 4 class rooms and good toilets.
Meanwhile Bro.Othon converted the bathroom of Mr. Faucheux's room as my room and
constructed two bathrooms dividing his room. Till a room was made ready for me, I was
walking 12 miles (19 KM) a day. I requested Bro.Eleazer for a bicycle and he sanctioned
one. Bro.Othon took charge of the maintenance of the bicycle. The bicycle carried me half
the distance and the other half, I had to push the bicycle up. 1 got tired of this way of
travel and hence 1 requested Bro. Eleazer to get me a motorcycle. He told me to buy a
motorcycle costing less than Rs.1000/- I managed to buy a second hand 5 horse power
NORTON bike with a side car. Thus I became the first Indian Brother to own and use a
two wheeler (motorbike). Bro.Othon saw to the maintenance of the bike. I got this vehicle
in the first week of February 1958. In the 2nd
week of April the same year, I joined
Bro.Antony Francisco to start the St. James School building and the Community in
Palakurichi. In the third week of May, 1958, Bro.Antony and I went to Yercaud for our
annual retreat. During the retreat, the Provincial and his Council decided the transfer of the
Brothers. Bro.Antony Francisco had to continue in Kolathur as Local Superior,
Bro.Montfort of the Cross was appointed Local Superior of Palakurichi and I was
appointed Local Superior of Little Flower, Pondur succeeding Bro.Gabriel Mary. The
Norton motorbike was given to Bro. Montfort of the Cross for his use.
Rev.Bro.Vitalis (Mathew Puthenpurackel) succeeded me in St.Joseph's Craigmore. After
him Bros.Samuel (M.P.John) Francise Xavier (Antony Raj) and Eric Davidswamy served
as Headmasters. Bro.Eric Davidswamy managed to transfer everything to Salem Diocese.

Introduction: For God so loved the world that He gave
His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him
should not perish but have everlasting life” Jn.3/16. God
has so ordained that His Son Jesus should suffer, shed
His blood and die a shameful death on the cross to save
the human race. Jesus, the Christ has borrowed our griefs
and sorrows and He was wounded for our transgressions
Is.53:4,5. His hands and feet were pierced, His garments
stripped off Ps.22:16,18; He was counted among the
criminals Ps:22:16, Is.53:9,12, Mk.15:27, Lk.23:32,33, Jn.19:18. He was forsaken by all,
forsaken even by the Father Ps22:1.
This Jesus had to shed His blood-innocent Mt.27:4, precious 1Pet.1:19, cleansing 1 Jn.1:7,
conquering Rev.12:11, redeeming Rom.3:24,25, sufficient but necessary and final
Heb.9:13,14,22-28
Christ‟s anguished sufferings: The Psalm 22, often quoted in the NT, is called “the Psalm
of the Cross” because it so precisely portrays Christ‟s anguished sufferings on the cross.
1. It is a cry of anguish and grief from a godly sufferer who has not been yet delivered
from trials and sufferings. In this sense all suffering believers can identify with the
words of this prayer.
2. The words of this Psalm express an experience-inspired by the Holy Spirit, the
Psalmist both predicts the sufferings of Jesus Christ in His crucifixion and points to
His subsequent vindication three days later.
Jesus uttered this dreadful cry on the cross - “…why have you forsaken me?” Ps.22:1
When as a result of His bearing our sins and diseases in His own body, and taking our
judgment, His heavenly Father withdrew His holy and intimate presence. (Is.53:4-6,8,
10-12, 2 Cor. 5:21)
Jesus was forsaken by God because He suffered in sinners‟ place, having become a curse
for us (Gal 3:13). By quoting this verse, Jesus was claiming the entire Psalm 22 as a
description of Himself.
“Why have you forsaken Me?” - The sufferings of Christ expressed herein points to the
climax of the sufferings of Christ for the lost world. His cry in Aramaic “My God, My
God, why have you forsaken me?” testifies that He experienced separation from God as
the substitute of sinners. Here the sorrow, grief and pain were at their worst. He was
wounded for our transgressions Is.53:5 and gave Himself “ransom for many” (Mt.20:28,
1 Tim.2:6). Him who had no sin, God make “to be sin for us” 2Cor.5:21. He died
forsaken that we might never be forsaken (Ps.22). Thus we are redeemed by the suffering
The sufferings and the Blood of Christ

of Christ (1 Pet.1:19). The Scripture plainly sets forth Christ‟s sacrificial death as that
which procured the believers‟ redemption, i.e. release from bondage to sin (Eph.1:7,
Heb.9:14). The blood of Jesus Christ is central to the NT concept of redemption (1 Cor.
10:16, Eph. 2:13, 1 Pet.1:2, Rev.7:14, 12:11). On the cross Christ shed His innocent
blood in order to remove our sins and reconcile us with God (Heb.5:8, Rom.5:19,
Phil.2:8, Lev.16)
What Jesus‟ Blood Accomplishes: By His blood, Christ has accomplished the
following:
1. His blood forgives the sins of all who repent and believe.
2. His blood ransoms all believers from the powers of Satan and evil (Acts.20:28,
Eph.1:7, 1 Pet.1:18-19, Rev.5:9, 12:11)
3. His blood justifies all who believe in Him (Rom.3:24-25)
4. His blood cleanses believers‟ consciences that they might serve God without
guilt in full assurances of faith (Heb.9:4, 10:22, 13:18)
5. His blood sanctifies the people of God (Heb.13:12, 1 Jn.1:7-10)
6. His blood opens the way for believers to come directly before God through Him
in order to find grace, mercy, help and salvation (Heb.7:25, 10:19, Eph.2:13,18)
7. His blood is a guarantee of all the promises of the New Covenant (Heb.10:29,
13:20, Mt.26:28, 1 Cor.11:25)
8. The saving, reconciling and purifying power of the blood of Christ is
continually appropriated to believers as they come to God through Him
(Heb.7:25, 10:22, 1 Jn.1:7)
Conclusion: The suffering and dying Jesus invites us His disciples, to share His sufferings
in a small way. His earnest appeal is that we give up all our own very selves and take up
our crosses and follow Him (Mt.16:24). Lent is a time, a holy season during which a
Christian purifies himself/herself giving glory to God, praying and working for his/her
brothers and sisters. As far as possible a Christian gives up certain permitted joy and in a
small way follows the suffering Christ and listens to His Word and meditates.
We, the consecrated among the people of God, are expected to be ever grateful to God for
His redeeming power and for the rich Charisms we have inherited through our Institute
and through our Father Montfort. This leads us to live our present with joy and happiness
and with passion. This makes us hope for and face the future with greater joy in the Spirit
of the risen Lord.
Let us make our „Communities, Institutions and the Church, homes and Schools of
Communion‟. May the power and glory of our risen Savior fill us all and all our homes
with His power, love, glory and Spirit!

I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a
neighboring town of Venice, Italy, the city of lights and
water.
As we enjoyed our coffee, a man entered and sat at an
empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his
order saying, “Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the
wall.”
We heard this order with rather interest and observed that he
was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two.
When he left, the waiter put a piece of paper on the wall saying “A Cup of Coffee”.
While we were still there, two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on
the table and one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This
time also, the waiter did the same; he put a piece of paper on the wall saying, “A Cup of
Coffee”.
It was something unique and perplexing for us. We finished our coffee, paid the bill and
left.
After a few days, we had a chance to go to this coffee shop again. While we were enjoying
our coffee, a man poorly dressed entered. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and
said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.”
The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man had
his coffee and left without paying.
We were amazed to watch all this, as the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and
threw it in the trash bin.
Now it was no surprise for us – the matter was very clear. The great respect for the needy
shown by the inhabitants of this town made our eyes well up in tears.
Ponder upon the need of what this man wanted. He enters the coffee shop without having
to lower his self-esteem… he has no need to ask for a free cup of coffee… without asking
or knowing about the one who is giving this cup of coffee to him… he only looked at the
wall, placed an order for himself, enjoyed his coffee and left.
A truly beautiful thought. Probably the most beautiful wall you may ever see anywhere!
It‟s this that makes us human..... Live to do something good each day selflessly, it will
surely make your heart smile.
Coffee on the Wall
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed. - Is.53:5
