DESCRIPTION
The AskU community is densely populated with city slickers, but we wanted to remind the country bumpkins that we haven’t forgotten about you! We asked you to share your thoughts on different areas of rural health in Australia. We love your opinions (as always!) and wanted to know how that looked against health statistics. Generally, we can see that AskU Aficionados think that city dwellers are more likely to engage in unhealthy habits however, our research tells a different story….. In regards to poor health behaviours, the AskU community believed that the incidence of smoking, alcohol abuse and obesity is more prevalent in larger cities. However, this is not the case. Taking a look at smoking alone, ABS findings show that the rate of smoking increased with remoteness. In 2010, smoking rates were 28.9% in remote/ very remote areas, 20.7% in outer regional areas, 19.9% in inner regional areas and 16.8% in major cities.TRANSCRIPT
