Purpose of AssessmentTo determine what a student knows based on instruction. To identify what deficits a student may have.To decide how to group students based on data. To evaluate what you believe contributed to the success of your students, and why some students struggled.

AssessmentsThere are four broad Types of Assessments:ScreeningDiagnosticProgress MonitoringSummative

ScreeningData: Criterion data, used to determine if student can read fluently on grade level. Targeted to determine if further assessment is needed to locate student weaknesses.Usually brief in nature and given to groups or individuals.Examples: Word Identification Fluency-WIF, Oral Reading Fluency ORF.

DiagnosticData: Standardized Norm referenced or Informal.Assessment is designed to provide specific data and target specific areas where students may need additional support. Examples: Informal Reading Inventory, Diagnostic Assessment of Reading, Qualitative Reading Inventory.

Progress MonitoringData: Informal data is used to determine student performance academic growth. Administered periodically to determine if the intervention program is working or if student is making appropriate growth.Examples: Running records, Anecdotal notes, Timed reading tests, Performance Based Rubrics.

Outcome Measures (Summative Assessments)Data: Norm-referenced, standardized rather than informal, to assess how student compares to their peers.Used at the end of program: year, course, or unit.Used to determine the level of achievement or proficiency of student progress.Used to determine if the district, school, or subgroup is making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Examples: Florida Standard Assessment (FSA) , Florida Standard Alternate Assessment (FSAA).
