1. It has been said, "Not all learning takes place in the classroom."Compare and contrast knowledge gained from personal experiencewith knowledge gained from classroom instruction. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

In my opinion, we both need the knowledge that comes from school and from our

environment or experiences. There are things that we don’t learn from school that

we learn from the outside and vice versa. The things that we learn from school

are mostly concerned about our intellectual growth and the things that we learn

outside are more on moral, emotional and social growth. Both the knowledge we

gained from the two sources can be applicable in our daily life. The things we

learn from school can be applied in our experiences and the things we learn from

experiences can be applied in school.

If I will assess myself, I think most of my knowledge is from my experiences which

I didn’t learn in school. But then, I give prior to the things that I learn from my

subjects because it will affect my future career.

Knowledge is learned in different ways, some through books and education, and

others by experiences that we have had. Classroom knowledge is necessary to

our development as professional, and in order to have a career, as well as a well

paid job. But we also learn from past mistakes, and from the errors that we have

made throughout our lives. They are both very important for us to be able to gain

different kind of knowledge, and to choose just one would be unrealistic.

All the information we need to be able to function well in society, have a job, a

house, a car, and have the main necessities we need in life is found through

education. This education is found in the classroom, and here is where we learn to

get the knowledge we need to succeed. In the same way, knowledge is learned by

personal experiences. We are human being, and we learn to recognize when we

make a mistake. This has a great significance in our development to become

more mature as well as knowledgeable. We learn valuable lesson both in the

classrooms and by person experiences every single day.

In contrast, there are many lessons from which we don't learn by our own

mistakes, but rather in the schools. For instance, we cannot become a

professional, or work as one, without the training, and the education that we need

in order to learn the main factors of that profession. These cannot be learned by

experiences. We do not go, and work as a doctor. In order to learn how to save

people's lives we need to study in the classroom, and get the education we need

to be able to function well, and on an ethical manner. Otherwise no matter how

experienced at working with sick people we may be, we could not do our job right.

In addition, we would be putting people's lives in danger.

In conclusion, I agree that not all knowledge that we have is from school and not

all that we know is from our experiences. School and outside environment should

compliment each other for the total growth of an individual.

2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?Children should begin learning a foreign language as soon as they

start school.Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

Yes, I agree that children should start learning foreign language, specifically

English, as soon as possible. In this way, they will not have a hard time speaking

and learning the language when they grow up. Besides, they should really be

used to it because it is mostly the medium of instruction that they will use in

school. It is also important that children learn English because if they will need it

in their future career, it’s an advantage for them that they are already used to it.

But then, parents should guide their child and make them used in speaking both

English and Tagalog fluently so that the child knows his/her native language.

In my case, I sometimes wish that my parents should have taught me to speak

English when I was just a child because now I’m having a hard time, but just little

though, speaking the language especially I’m an English Major student so I should

be fluent in speaking the English language. But eventually, my aunt is an English

teacher so she taught me the basics of English like correct use of grammar andsentence construction. By that, I can say that it became my foundation that’s why

I’m not having that much difficulty in constructing sentence and speaking with

correct grammar.

Nowadays, many people believe that children should begin learning foreign

languages as soon as they start school. I strongly support this opinion on account

of these reasons.

First foreign languages are so important as they have never been before. The

world in which we live is becoming more international since the process called"globalization" started in the previous century. Learning several languages is

especially essential for people growing up in non-English speaking countries.

English is now influencing everyone's life. For instance, in contrast to the mid

twentieth-century, European university students are often taught in English and

have to read English literature. I am glad about this development. According to

me, it has many advantages. However, people cannot avoid learning foreign

languages today.

The younger the learner is, the easier this process is. Scientists are convinced

that children even do not have any problems when they learn several languages

at the same time. Although they may mix words of different languages at the

beginning, they finally manage the separation after much practice. Further, there

is evidence that a person never learns more than in the first years of his live.

Consequently, this is the best time for kids to learn something that they will need

for the rest of their lives.

To top it all off, it is necessary for us to learn the international language because

we will have a lot of benefits when we know and when we are used in speaking

the English language. It may be an advantage in our future course, future career,

or we can use it when we go to other countries eventually.

3. Some students like classes where teachers lecture (do all of the

taking) in class. Other students prefer classes where the studentsdo some of the talking. Which type of class do you prefer? Givespecific reasons and details ti support your choice.

For me, I prefer the combination of both the teachers and students will talk and

discuss in the class. In my opinion, it should not always be the teacher who will do

all the talking and the discussion, especially in high school or college level,

because it’s one way of teaching the students to develop self-confidence and to

assess if the student is good in communication and speaking skills. But then, the

teacher should assist the students, especially the high school ones, because theirspeaking skill and confidence is not fully-developed. Teachers should understand

that some will have a hard time explaining their report and some will just read

their report without explaining. Teachers should not make their students feel

embarrassed when they have reported in a wrong way because instead of

building up their confidence, they will just be ashamed and frustrated and might

not like to report again.

As an education student, I understand that our professors will assign us to do all

the discussion because they arepreparing us in our future job and career as a

teacher. Eventually, I hope I can enhance my speaking skills so that I will be ableto explain the topics clearly.

I think that such classes will promote more academic efficiency. Students can

discuss the related topics of the class. They can find a lot of different opinions on

particular subjects or themes. If somebody does not understand something he/she

can ask his/her classmates while talking. Moreover, such classes help students to

develop their communication skills. This is strikingly important if taking into

account the level of nowadays competition in the labour market. All the described

aspects undoubtly encrease the students academic efficiency.

All students can benefit from such classes. While talking about a particular subject

students can write down the conversation and than look through it to prepare for

the term paper or some other paper. This classes will give students an

opportunity to express their own standpoints; and therefore, students can easily

find out what others think of it. For example, in my university there were a lot of

classes where we were required to participate in the talkings. I remember that in

Page 5: assign - arianne cabañez

all theses classes I got the highest grade because I was one of the most active

participants of such classes. In addition, all students stated that the grades that

were received in such classes were higher than those of the other classes. That is

why these form of teaching is beneficial to all students.

In conclusion, there may be some advantages of classes where teachers do all of

the talking. But as my arguments were presented above, I consider classes wherethere are opportunities for students to talk on the related topics more useful. Such

classes can promote academic efficiency and all students can benefit from them.

If I have chance to choose which kind of classes to attend, I would definitely

choose classes where students can do some of the talking.
