January 2015 Newsletter

4-H builds self-esteem, and helps youth to realize that their opinion counts and that they can make a

difference. -4-H Volunteer

Greetings from Washington DC!

Three of our team members- Jackie, Katie, and Laurel- went to the National 4-H Healthy Living Summit at the 4-H National Conference Center in Maryland. They presented a session on stress management to over 100 people from across the nation. The session received great reviews from all who attended. To show some California home-state spirit, ambassadors provided attendees with yellow California 4-H stress balls which were enjoyed by all. While attending the conference, the State Ambassadors met other 4-Hers from all over the nation, learning how 4-H operates and the different ways that other states incorporate Healthy Living in their state 4-H program. Jackie, Laurel and Katie also had an opportunity to meet one of the National 4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors from

California, Ru, who taught them about meditation. While in Maryland, they toured DC Cupcakes bakery and Georgetown Cupcake where they had the opportunity to meet the store owner, Sophie, pictured below. While in Washington D.C., the ambassadors also had the chance to go on a night tour, which was very cold. They saw multiple famous monuments including the Lincoln Memorial and White House. Overall, this was a great experience representing the UC ANR 4-H YDP and attending the National 4-H Healthy Living Summit. If you are interested in having the State Ambassador team present at your next event, please go to the California 4-H State Ambassador page to request them: http://4h.ucanr.edu/files/225727.pdf The State Ambassador team has been very busy presenting workshops this past month and planning aspects of upcoming events including State Leadership Conference and California Focus. Keep your eyes open for updates on state conferences and we hope to see you there!

Thanks,

California 4-H Foundation Updates

Recognizing the “Best of the Best” Through Statewide Scholarships and Awards

Are you looking for a meaningful way to directly invest in a young person’s future? Consider creating a named Golden Clover Award ($525 annual investment) or a Higher Education Scholarship ($1,000 annual investment). Not only will you have the satisfaction of helping a youth who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and citizenship skills, but you will have the ability to give back to 4-H for years to come while receiving recognition for your tremendous generosity and commitment. Recognition opportunities include naming the award or scholarship after your family or business name, an announcement in our statewide newsletters and your named scholarship or award listed on our website with a short bio about you or the family member you are honoring along with a picture or company logo.

Thanks to our generous donors, higher education scholarships are available to graduating high school and collegiate-age 4-H members to help fund educational expenses such as tuition and room and board. The Golden Clover Awards recognize outstanding achievements of members, volunteers, program staff, and groups within the 4-H Youth Development Program.

The California 4-H Foundation and the State 4-H Office work together to raise funds for and to administer the annual 4-H awards and scholarships. Information will be available on the website on April 1st at http://4h.ucanr.edu/Resources/Members/Scholarships_-_Awards/Scholarships_-_Awards/ The deadline to apply is June 1, 2016. Please contact Paula Allison, Foundation Executive Director, at [email protected] to learn more about creating a named award or scholarship through an annual donation or an endowment. “I had a wonderful experience at Cal Poly and grew more as a person than I thought possible. The 4-H scholarship I

received helped me to reach my educational goals as well as a personal goal to graduate from college debt-free.

Thank you so much for your support.” -Jason Colombini, 2013 Mabel Jacks Scholarship Recipient

PROGRAM UPDATES

Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.

Evaluation

Get updates, tips, articles, and more on our social media sites! It’s a good way to stay informed on what’s happening with 4-H in California.

Communications

Thank you to everyone who has completed their Spark Score surveys. You are constantly growing and changing, and you may not answer questions the same from one point in time to the next! By doing the surveys once or twice a year, we can see how youth in 4-H are developing and changing. These surveys are our way to find out about you and how the UC ANR 4-H Youth Development Program is doing overall!

The Public Value of 4-H

We want help telling your 4-H story! In August 2013, six “public values” were developed to tell our communities what 4-H does for our young people and what our young people do for their communities. Here are the public values: 4-H increases personal responsibility that positively contributes to communities. 4-H increases the economic sustainability, growth, and prosperity, of California's global economy. 4-H increases civic engagement to strengthen communities. 4-H improves public health and safety. 4-H ensures a safe, sustainable, and secure food supply. 4-H reduces public costs to society.

If you’d like to share a personal or program story related to any of public values, please contact the 4-H Evaluation Coordinator, Kendra Lewis, at [email protected].
