“HAVE YOU LEFT YOUR FIRST LOVE?” Revelation 2:1-7

The church at Ephesus is a good example of many Baptist churches today. It had a great start and was known for its genuine love for God, for the saints, and for the lost. Over about 30 years it changed dramatically—so much so that Jesus said, “you have left your first love.” (Can we really love the Son and not the saints and...not the sinner?) Consider (1) the CONDITION of the church and (2) the CORREC-TION for the church.

I. The CONDITION OF THE CHURCH (vv.2-4,6) A. They were LIVELY IN THEIR CHRISTIAN DEEDS (v.2a “I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance”) B. They were LABLED FOR THEIR CHRISTIAN DISCIPLINE (v. 2b “and that you cannot tolerate evil men…”) C. They were LOYAL IN THEIR CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE (v. 2c “...and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles and they are not, and you found them to be false.”) D. They were LONG ON THEIR CHRISTIAN DETERMINATION (v. 3 “you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake and have not grown weary.”) E. They were LACKING IN CHRISTIAN LOVE (v.4 “But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”) IT IS FOCUSED. 1. Christian love is focused on the SAVIOR. (Matthew 22:37) 2. Christian love is focused on the SAINTS (John 13:34-35) 3. Christian love is focused on the SINNER (Matthew 11:19) II. The CORRECTION FOR THE CHURCH (v. 5) A. They were instructed to REMEMBER (v. 5a “Therefore remem- ber from where you have fallen...”) B. They were instructed to REPENT (v. 5b “and repent…”) OF WHAT SHOULD THE CHURCH REPENT? 1. Repent of PRAYERLESSNESS 2. Repent of FAITHLESSNESS 3. Repent of POWERLESSNESS 4. Repent of SELFISHNESS 5. Repent of SINFULNESS C. They were instructed to RETURN (v. 5c “and do the deeds you did at first…”) - Return to: 1. The Great Confession (Matthew 16:16) 2. The Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-38) 3. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20)

Jesus said to the church at Ephesus, “repent or else I am coming to you and WILL REMOVE YOUR LAMPSTAND (church) OUT OF ITS PLACE” (v. 5d).

The more news I watch and the more reports I hear from Pas-tors in the churches, the harder it is to find encouragement. How-ever, there is much encouragement to receive from God’s word and God’s work in the world. Whether the small world I live in (essentially one town, two counties and one state) or the whole world of which I’m a part. God’s Word is a phenomenal source of encouragement. I remember reading about Joshua’s encouragement from the Lord in 1:5,9 when he was faced with the insurmountable task of leading thousands of people into the promised land. The Lord said, “No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you: I will not fail you or forsake you” (v. 5). What a thought! What power! What a prom-ise! All he had to do was “be strong and courageous!” The Lord said to him...and says to us in our “little worlds,” “Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (v. 9). So, no matter what the latest breaking news may be I have a great source of encouragement. Just as certainly as God has been with those servants who have gone on before us, He will be with us… “all the days of our lives.” And He will be with those servants who follow us. Be of courage! The work goes on!...and on!...and on!...until Jesus comes when we’ll all be gathered home.

Encouragingly Yours, Russell Cook

I have often seen the meaning of my name, MARSHA, defined as something like “brave hearted one.” I didn’t start out in life feeling very brave, though. There proba-bly weren’t too many little girls any more shy than I was until I was about 16 or 17. But, I had parents who encouraged me repeatedly beyond my shyness, one experi-ence after another, one year after another. With lots of prayer and encouragement and just plain working on it, I began to learn how to live life more bravely.

In retrospect, I realize now my parents were shining examples to follow. Daddy served three years overseas in the Air Force during WWII, while Mother bravely left her Kansas farm home for business college and then lived as a single woman in Kansas City and Washington, D.C. She returned home to help run the family farm when her dad had cancer. After they married and had two young girls, they bravely moved our little family from oil field to oil field for five years, until they settled down to farm in Arkansas. There they bravely tackled the constant hardships of farming, eventually losing a home in a fire and then a farm to bankruptcy.

Their final acts of bravery are the most poignant of all to me, as I watched them live out the ends of their lives in my home and in a nursing home, both succumbing to the ravages of Alzheimer’s. Daddy bravely accepted the inevitable that they could no longer live alone, hard as that was for him. One day, as I watched Mother attempt to walk down the hallway of the nursing home following hip surgery, her head held high as her gown flapped around her thin little legs, I came to tears. The nursing staff was clapping, saying, “Come on, Bonnie, you can do it! You can do it!” Somehow that message penetrated her challenged brain and she held her head even higher, as she triumphantly made it to the end of the hallway. I stood there watching, thinking, “I have a very brave mother…” Until that moment, I had never attached that adjective to her, but I suddenly realized she had spent most of her life teaching me to be braver than I thought I was. By precept and by example. At that shining moment in her life, one of her final times to walk, I loved her more than I think I ever had before…

Thank you, Mother and Daddy, for letting your love lights of bravery shine for me… Marsha Cook, Director
