ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL PHYSICISTS OF INDIA (AMPI)
The Association of Medical Physicists of India was founded in 1976 with the objective of encouraging the application of
physics in medicine. It provides a forum for medical physicists in the form of annual conferences/ workshops/ symposia/
seminars (at national and international levels) and publication of a quarterly journal (Journal of Medical Physics, JMP) for
the exchange of ideas and dissemination of knowledge and experience in the field of Medical Physics. The Association
collaborates with similar organizations in the world to raise the quality of medical physics in India. Currently, it has more
than 1400 active members comprising of radiation/ medical physicists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, engineers and
technologists. The wide spectrum of membership reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of the medical physics and the
association. In 2008, AMPI constituted its autonomous scientific and educational wing, the College of Medical Physics of
India (CMPI), to initiate the evaluation and certification programme for the qualified medical physicists. The college has
also been entrusted to formulate the policy of accreditation of education and training centres in the country. Now, the
association has four wings namely, the Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees, the College and the Journal. AMPI is
affiliated to International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and is constituent member of IOMP regional chapter,

MEMORANDUM
Sub: Revision in the qualification of Teachers in the Discipline of Radiological Physics/ Medical
Physics & faculty positions for Radiological/ Medical Physicists for MD (Radiotherapy, Radio-
diagnosis, Nuclear Medicine), DNB and MSc Programs.
(A) Role of Radiological / Medical Physicists in Medicine
Medical Radiation Physics is an important discipline of science which contributes significantly
in diagnosis of different types of diseases by Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear medicine
procedures well in treatment of cancer and other benign diseases by means of radiation therapy.
Recent advances in the technology of medical radiation imaging and therapeutic devices/
techniques have increased the involvement of medical radiation physicists by many folds. In
addition, Medical Radiation Physicists play important role in teaching and training of medical
practitioner as well as allied radiation workers.
Education and training program of Radiological/Medical Physicists in India started in the Year
1961. Currently, about 1000 medical physicists having Post M.Sc. Diploma in Radiological
Physics/ M.Sc. Degree in Medical Physics and appropriate clinical training are working in the
various medical institutions (about 340 including 25 Regional Cancer Centers) in the country as
qualified professionals who have also been registered by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board
(AERB) as qualified radiation professionals. Among these about 50 radiological/ medical
physicists are having Ph.D. Degree and designated as teaching faculty as per the norms of
Medical Council of India (MCI). Majority of the medical physicists are working in the
Department of Radiation Oncology and they are involved in radiotherapy treatment planning,
medical dosimetry, quality assurance and radiation safety of cancer patients.
(B) AMPI: An Old and Well Recognized Professional Body of Medical Physicists
Association of Medical Physicists of India (AMPI) [www.ampi.org.in] is the professional body
of Radiological/ Medical physics with more than 1000 active medical physicists as its life
members who are involved in professional services and teaching in the three different
disciplines of medicine (radiation oncology, nuclear medicine and radio-diagnosis) in the
country. The Radiological/ Medical Physics profession is also recognized by Atomic Energy
Regulatory Board (AERB) and MCI. AMPI has also established its college (College of Medical
Physics of India, CMPI) in 2009 as its education, training, accreditation and certification wing
analogous to Medical Physics College of Canada, Europe, USA, UK and Australia. Since its

inception, the CMPI of AMPI is regularly conducting medical physics competency certification
examination and teaching courses.
AMPI is holding its annual conferences every year and so far 35 conferences have been
successfully organized. A number of eminent radiological/ medical physicists, radiation
oncologists, radiologists and radiation professionals from India and abroad are participating in
the AMPI annual conferences. AMPI is also conducting workshops, seminars/ symposia where
medical radiation professionals of all categories participate. It holds CME / workshops for
medical personnel on radiological safety also. In addition, AMPI is conducting radiation safety
related training and certification programs in collaboration with Radiological Physics &
Advisory Division of BARC and about six such courses are conducted every year since 2006.
AMPI is affiliated to International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP) and Indian National
Science Academy (INSA).
(C) Humble Request
1. Request to consider Radiological / Medical Physics similar to that of Anatomy, Physiology,
Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Microbiology in the “Teachers-Eligibility-Qualification
regulations-2012”.
2. Essential academic qualifications for Radiological physics should be revised in the MCI booklet
entitled “Teachers-Eligibility-Qualification regulations-2012” as per MCI minutes dated 10th
March 2007, MCI letter dated 10th
April 2008 & Notification of MCI in the Gazette of India
dated 23rd
March 2010 (copies attached).
3. Under the Radiological Physics column of “Teachers-Eligibility-Qualification regulations-
2012”, academic qualification in position 4, for Tutor / Demonstrator / Resident / Registrar for
recruitment is MBBS. This statement should be revised as per the decision taken by the MCI
above (point no.2)
4. In the academic qualification column, for Professor, Associate Professor, the PhD in
Radiological Physics/Medical Physics/Physics should be considered instead of PhD
(Physics/Chem./Biophysics).
5. Proposed qualifications & promotional criteria for teachers in Radiological Physics should be
implemented as per AMPI letter (dated 13th September 2014) to MCI. (copy attached).
a. Qualified Radiological / Medical Physicists (as per Atomic Energy Regulatory Board
Norms) have either Post Graduate Degree in Medical Physics or Post M.Sc. (Physics)
Diploma in Radiological Physics along with requisite training / clinical experience and
hence they deserve academic position starting from the designation of Assistant
Professor.
6. Request to include Radiological Physics/ Medical Physics faculty for MD (Radiotherapy, Radio-
diagnosis, Nuclear Medicine), DNB and MSc programs. Recognition to these courses by MCI
shall be given by considering Radiological / Medical Physics as one of the teaching faculties.
a. Syllabus of MD (Radiotherapy), MD (Radiology) and MD (Nuclear Medicine) contains
significant components of Physics / Radiological Physics / Medical Physics. While
delivering lecturers on the different elements of the syllabus of these MD courses, it
AMPI: Annual Report 2014-15
Notice for 39th
Annual General Body Meeting (Bangalore) & Annual Report 2014-15 Page 27 / 43
requires significant knowledge of topic concerned and hence Radiological / Medical
Physics faculty is required in such teaching courses.
7. Faculty of Radiological / Medical Physics should be included as Examiner in MD
(Radiotherapy, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine), DNB and MSc programs.
a. Teaching faculty of Radiological / Medical Physics are directly involved as Co-guides
for Medical Post Graduates who are undergoing MD research thesis in Radiotherapy &
Oncology, Nuclear Medicine and Radio-diagnosis in different medical institutes and
also for the thesis work of DNB Post Graduates.
8. Since NCHRH Bill 2009 has different departments, Radiological/ Medical Physics should be
incorporated in the department of Medicine where a separate sub-category of Radiological/
Medical Physics should be created covering all the four radiological disciplines (Radiation
Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Radio-diagnosis and Applied Medical Physics).
We request your esteemed office to consider our above proposed matters.
Thanking you madam,
Yours faithfully,

2. Mr Dayanand Sharma raised the question of status of Medical Physicist in medical colleges as well as in
other institutes though physicists are doing lots of academic work; the profession is not well recognized.
In this regard President replied that AMPI has discussed the matters in detail in the various EC meetings
and AERB officials and is actively contributing to enhance the status of medical physicist by organizing
conferences, workshop and formation of CMPI. He also informed that he has requested a group of senior
and interested active members geographically located to Delhi to coordinate with MCI, but
unfortunately nothing concrete could be made out.

3. Mr. Dayananda raised his concern for the introduction of dosimetrist post in AERB safety code. He also
said that in the AERB Safety Code the Chief Radiation Oncologist and Chief Radiotherapy
Technologists is recognized but there is no mention of Chief Medical physicist. Many members
suggested approaching AERB to correct this anomaly and also include the post of faculty in safety code.
Dr P K Dash Sharma agreed with these concerns and expressed his personal opinion about the position
of AERB. He clarified that the AERB safety code was circulated to eminent physicists and Oncologists
however AERB did not receive any such suggestion regarding the non-inclusion of Chief Medical
Physicist. He said that it must be a typographical mistake in AERB safety code. He suggested AMPI to
approach AERB to correct this anomaly. He said that the provision of faculty cannot be implemented in
safety code as it is not under AERB jurisdiction. He also said that the AERB’s role in the medical
physics course is limited and can only ensure that the Radiation Safety syllabus is included in the
syllabus. He clarified that the regulation of courses is under the purview of UGC.
President replied that AERB should include faculty positions in the safety code and the request for the
same to be made at the earliest.
4. Dr. Kaliyappan Perumal said that there is no council for medical physics at par with other professions
like nursing, pharmacy, physicians etc. Dr. S.D. Sharma suggested that AMPI should approach and
health ministry for formation of council. President suggested forming a committee with two nominees
per chapter and the committee will be reporting directly to the president. President requested secretary to
draft a letter and send it to all chapters for their representation.
5. Mr. Bibek Mishra raised the issue of discrepancy in qualification of Medical physics faculty in MCI
regulation. President replied that this issue was discussed in EC meeting and amendments will be done
in the letter addressed to MCI. Mr. Suresh Chaudhari, Mr.Ritu Raj Upreti and Mr. Vinod Pandey said
that it was resolved in the EC meeting that this issue will be discussed in GBM and decision will be
taken with the opinion of members in GBM. Mr. Dayananad Sharma, Dr. P.K. Dash Sharma, Dr.
Kaliyappan, Dr.Lalit Aggarwal and many other members felt that the recommendation of PhD for
Assistant Professor is not appropriate as the avenues for perusing the PhD are limited. Vice president
recommended a division (or standing) vote. As per the direction of president voting was conducted to
decide whether MCI letter sent by EC 2013 -2015 should be recalled or not. The recall of letter was
unanimously approved by all AMPI members without any opposition. Hence a decision was taken by
president with approval of GBM that the PhD for Tutor and Assistant professor should be exempted and
a new letter to MCI will be sent with the appropriate corrections recommended by GBM. President
requested to make the appropriate corrections in the letter and send it to MCI at earliest.
The meeting concluded with vote of thanks to the chair.
