About us• Our goal is to give students the edge in the

employment market to help them start a great career

• Our courses offer hands-on experience in world-class facilities and tuition from lecturers with years of industry experience

• We have links with national and international employers to help students find placements, internships and opportunities to study abroad

• We have a reputation for industry-relevant degree programmes, which is why we’re the number one university in the East Midlands for graduate employment (HESA 2015 – universities with a graduating class over 2,000)

• We have a greater staff to student ratio than most other universities, which means students will get more dedicated time with lecturers

A modern universitywith rich heritage• We achieved university status in 1992 and we

now have over 34,000 students (total student population)

• Teaching at our Derby site dates back to 1851, when it was a Diocesan Institution for Training

• Professor Kathryn Mitchell joined as Vice-Chancellor in 2015. She heads up a six strong

Executive Team – Hari Punchihewa, Deputy Chief Executive and Finance Director, Deputy-Vice Chancellors Professor Margaret Bruce, Professor Philip Plowden and Professor Rod Dubrow-Marshall, and June Hughes, Registrar

• Our Governing Council is chaired by Chris Hughes, and our Chancellor is the Duke of Devonshire

Academic excellenceOur courses embed a work-ready ethos in students, which is why 96.9% of Derby graduates are employed or in further study within six months (HESA, 2015).

• We’re one of the UK’s leading institutions for Education – rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for our teacher training

• The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 judged three-quarters of our research to be at

least ‘internationally significant’, with 5.4% deemed to be ‘world-leading’ and 24.5% ‘internationally excellent’

Serious about sport• Under the ‘Team Derby’ banner we provide

students, staff and members of the public with a world of sporting opportunity, fitness and activity

• Partnerships include Derby County Football Club, Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derbyshire Sport and Nuffield Health

• We are a founding partner of the Derbyshire Institute of Sport

• A new £10.8m Sports Centre opened in Summer 2015

• Team Derby were crowned the first ever champions of the National Badminton League in 2014–2015

• We provide scholarship and bursary opportunities to support talented individuals

Cultural champion• In 2009 we acquired Derby Theatre, which has a

long and rich history of delivering high quality drama

• Derby Theatre is a ‘Learning Theatre’, combining a professional programme with an exciting suite of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and an emerging talent programme aimed at

developing the next generation of artists

• In 2014 Derby Theatre was accepted into Arts Council England’s National Portfolio and will receive £500,000 per annum to support key strands of the Theatre’s programme of work from 2015 to 2018

• We’re also long-term supporters of the renowned Buxton Festival, and a key partner in FORMAT – the international photography festival held

in Derby every two years

Continuousimprovement• Our commitment to real world learning means

we are continually investing in some of the best university facilities in the UK. We’ve invested £150m in new facilities in the past ten years including:

• NHS-standard hospital ward• £10.8m sports centre• New £20m home for Derby Law School,

featuring a specialist law library, modern lecture facilities and court room

• £12m extension at Markeaton Street, which will provide an extra 4,200 square-metres for STEM subjects

• New engineering labs and photographic and music recording studios; industry standard kitchens and a fine dining restaurant; insectary, glass house and observation rooms; computer games suites; a commercial spa; a law court and forensic house

Environment• We’ve been awarded the EcoCampus Gold

award in recognition of our work towards environmental sustainability

• 88.13% of our waste was recycled last year

• 11.4% of our waste is turned into energy

• This year we sent no waste to landfill at all

• Energy consumption is 20.38% lower than last year

• Our carbon management programme aims to deliver a 27% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020

Regional impact• The total economic impact of the University of

Derby and its students is estimated at £560m

• In Buxton, the University of Derby and its students add an estimated £32m to the town’s economic output

• We’re backing the development of Infinity Park Derby, which will provide SMEs with innovation capabilities and support up to 8,000 jobs in the city

• We’re helping private sector businesses innovate, grow and create jobs through the £16m Invest to Grow programme

• Through the Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering (IISE) we support local engineering and advanced manufacturing businesses

Graduate success• Around 97% of our graduates are in work or

further study six months after graduation

• Our graduates can be found at leading businesses in the area including: Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Bombardier, East Midlands Airport, Derby County Football Club and Royal Derby Hospital

• Looking nationally and internationally, our graduates work at prestigious organisations such as BBC, Apple, LEGO, the National Theatre, the Natural History Museum and the Brit School

• Paul Cummins, the Derby graduate behind the Tower Poppies art installation, was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 2015 New Year Honours list

your needs, that can be studied full time or part time, including postgraduate and professional development courses to boost your career

• University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL) offers high quality courses that are valued

by industry. Many of our online courses are accredited by professional bodies. Our range of courses are designed with the busy professional in mind and are delivered in a structured and supported online learning environment. With more than ten years’ experience in online learning, thousands of students and a global reach, UDOL is one of the UK’s leading online learning providers

Our students are satisfiedIn the most recent National Student Survey (NSS), we increased our overall satisfaction rating to 88%.
