!At The Throttle!
Continuing our Disney adventure with our
niece and nephew, Grace and Michael, It was
a given that we would ride the Walt Disney
Railroad as it is a fact that any railroad buff
MUST ride the trains at Walt Disney World!
Walt Disney was an avid railroad fanatic who
built a miniature steam railroad, The Car-
ollwood Pacific Railroad in the backyard of
his private home.
The Walt Disney Railroad was the major at-
traction for me. (Perhaps not so much for
Gayle, Grace and Michael…)
It’s a narrow gauge railroad in the Magic
Kingdom and operates on a mile and one half
loop that circles the Park. It is one of the
busiest steam powered railroads as it trans-
ports 3.7 million passengers each year.
The locomotives used at Disney World were
procured from the United Railways of the
Yucatan Peninsula in 1969. Here they found
five (5) locomotives of which four (4) would
be restored and become the mode of power
for the Walt Disney Railroad. The fifth loco-
motive was in such poor shape that it was
sold and most likely scrapped.
Boilers were constructed and made to look
much older than they actually were. The new
boilers were then fitted out with diamond
smokestacks, square headlights, boiler jack-
ets, crosshead pumps and were finished off
with bright paint schemes and lots of brass.
Each morning before the Park opens; the en-
gines are fired up in the engine house and are
made ready for the day’s activities. As the
engines leave the engine house, they take the
spur to the main track that circles the Magic
Kingdom.
The locomotives were originally built be-
tween 1916 and 1928. Each engine and ten-
der carries 1,837 US gallons of water and
664US gallons of fuel oil. The tender is
topped off with water every 3 or 4 trips
around the circuit from the water tower. The
water tower is located near the Fantasy Land
Train Station.
Recently, all of the engines underwent an ex-
tensive overhaul which included a thorough
cleaning and repair.
The “Walter E. Disney” is a 4-6-0, “10
Wheeler” with drive wheels of 44” in diame-
ter, a boiler pressure of 16lbs, and a top
speed of 50mph.
The “Lillie Belle” is a 2-6-0, “Mogul” and is
used mainly for park opening ceremonies.
Top speed is 45mph.

The “Roger E. Broggie” is a 4-6-0. It’s named after the
man who acquired the locomotives for Walt and who
helped build Disney’s Carrolwood Pacific Railroad.
The “Roy O. Disney” is named after Walt’s older brother
and business partner; and who, after Walt’s death, came
out of retirement to oversee the construction and comple-
tion of Walt Disney World. This engine is a 4-4-0
“American Engine” with the same operating characteris-
tics with a top speed of 55mph.
The train ride never gets old and the scenery changes with
every trip. I guess that’s what adds to the Magic of the
Kingdom!
Our next meeting is, Sunday, August 23rd, at the Holiday
Inn in Itasca. The address is 860 Irving Park Road, Itasca,
IL 60143. Ph: 630-773-2340. Dinner is at 5:30pm. The
meeting will begin at approximately 6:45pm.
We will have a joint presentation on the Denver Conven-
tion by the Dafoe’s and the Lienau’s as well as a report on
the LGB Convention from Bill Schwartz.

CUC 203 (Lab) Update
Lou Van Winkle, Ray Holich and Butch Hu-
vaera volunteered to help clean up Walter
Radke’s layout on Saturday July 11th. They
got three loops running but there is still work
to do before Walter would judge the layout
ready for an open house.
Walter came through angioplasty successfully
but his doctor suggested limits on his physical
activity. Because of this it is uncertain when
the next session of CUC 203 will be held.
Thanks so much to Lou, Ray and Butch for
stepping in while I was on vacation.
Steve
They just are fun, are they not? Well I found
another way to have them entertain me in my
darkest hours of this cold and wet summer.
The items I needed were just in front of me so
that is my excuse for not seeing them sooner.
First I had some stove pipes about 6 inches in
diamenter, putting them together made a pipe
about six feet high. Squirrels cannot climb
stove pipe, too slick. I then anchored the pipe
with a seven foot rebar driven into the ground.
Now the pipe had some movement and could
not be climbed. Taking a metal pie pan I drove
5, 8 penny nailes thru the bottom in a ring so
the pie pan could be placed on top of the stove
pipe without falling off.
After placing the pie pan on the stove pipe
with bird seed came the most critical part of
the project. I had to find a lawn chair, a small
table, a bottle of wine, some cheese and crack-
ers and place them about 10 to 12 feet from the
stove pipe feeder and wait. It didn’t take long
and the show was on. Up they would go and
then down they came.

The Santa Fe and Western is a loose depiction
of the double-track mainline of the Santa Fe
RR in Araizona and New Mexico. Because
the layout includes over five-feet of vertical
elevation, we could create an 80 foot stream
with five waterfalls. Some of the garden's fea-
tures include a scratch-built model of the Fred
Harvey hotel and Santa Fe Station in Las Ve-
gas, New Mexico; an eight-foot version of the
Canyon Diablo bridge, located 30 miles east of
Flagstaff, Arizona, and an eight-track storage
shed modeled after the Santa Fe's old engine
terminal building in Barstow, California. The
garden consists of 120 cubic-yards of soil;
over 20 tons of rock, and 13 pallets of retain-
ing wall block.

The Rock River Pass RR is built on an The
Rock River Pass Railroad consists of about
650 feet of track in seven loops with a siding.
Digitrax DCC powers the two main loops,
each main loop is 175 feet long, and the small
loops are DC. The area between the Rock Gar-
den and the patio area narrows to about four
feet, hence the Pass.
The primary theme of the Rock River Pass RR
is the Circus. The town of Rock River is at the
East end of the layout. The Circus is located
inside a loop just west of the town. The build-
ings in the town are made from Jig Stone
molded concrete blocks. We have added build-
ing made from the Stoneworks style form
building.
A farm with scratch built farmhouse with a Jig
Stone fireplace and a barn made of cedar deck-
ing cut to size. Several bird house buildings.
Just like in the movie several Big Fish in the
Rock River. Plus an area of Southwest influ-
ence buildings. New this year are two adobe
style cement building modeled after the Piko
buildings.
We use a Dallee Trolley stop circuit for our
Town loop. It stops for a few seconds at the
front of the loop. I installed DCC bitswitch
loop controls on each main loop to allow two
trains to run on each loop without running into
each other. If the trailing train gets too close to
the train in front it will stop until there is a safe
clearance and then start back up automatically.
We added a loop, about 65 feet, of hand laid G
Scale track which has been re-purposed into
Standard Gauge. Running on this loop is a
1930's Pre-War American Flyer Standard
Gauge train. You have to see this to believe it!

logging town.
The McTagooie and Tortuga Railroad is a
1:20.3 scale, narrow gauge logging railroad set
in the early 1900's. This above ground line in-
cludes 300 ft. of aluminum code 250 track, a

We welcome you to our home and Garden
Railroad. As you enter the “G & R Railroad”,
you will be greeted by “Smokey” our carved
black bear from Colorado. Just to Smokey’s
right, you encounter our whimsical Disney and
Circus village, outfitted with many of our
friends and features from Disney World as
well a Ferris wheel and Circus Tent. Mickey
would be proud! As you continue through the
layout you will see a number of different vil-
lages and period settings surrounded by ponds
and waterfalls.
The railroad was started in 1999 as a small
loop around the choke cherry tree (Now the
Crow’s Nest). Then we had the pleasure of
meeting Bill Valkner and needless to say, our
Garden Railroad expanded! Thanks to Bill’s
inspiration, creativity, expertise and deep
friendship, our yard was transformed into a
Garden Railroaders dream come true.
The yard and water features were constructed
using approximately 180 tons of rock and
moves over 40,000 gallons of water per hour.
These water features provide an interesting
backdrop to the settings throughout the yard.
You’ll also note that there are over 3000 annu-
als with a vast array of perennials that create
this colorful garden.
The railroad operates with nine miles of scale
track, twelve (12) running G-Scale model
trains. The Santa Fe Chief Passenger train (a
special section of the Super Chief) circles the
perimeter of the back yard, while a long
freight train makes its way over bridges cross-
ing the large waterfall moving towards a mas-
sive boulder fountain. As the train continues
its trek, it moves through a tunnel directly be-
hind the Fairy Castle. Some of the other areas
include farm houses, barns, and even a saw
mill, just to name a few. As you continue, you
won’t want to miss the Indian Village, com-
plete with Teepees, cowboys, and a working
geyser.
Our latest addition to the layout is the Big Boy
loop with the Coaling Tower and the Hudson
pulling the “20th Century Ltd.” There is also a
coal mine, diamond mine (for Gayle) as this
! Havin’ Fun & Runnin’ Trains & Runnin’ Trains & Havin’ Fun ! 8

few.

The Wisconsin Central Withee Twig Line
has been a work-in-progress for ten years and
has reached its current state only after owner-
ship was frightened by an impending Open
House. The layout is a 100 foot loop on an
elevated part of the back yard retained by dis-
carded METRA ties stacked about three high.
The track loop was moved from our previous
house to its current location and laid out in ap-
proximately it’s original shape. Composite
lumber stakes were driven by members of a
CAGRS-U team such that the tops of the
stakes followed a pre-defined track elevation
plan. One stake every foot (approximately).
Strips of composite were laid along the tops of
the stakes and the ten-foot sections of code
350 rail secured to the strips by screwing the
plastic ties to the strips. The track structure
was next back-filled with dirt to create the de-
sired profiles along the track.
The prototype of the WCWT is a central-
Wisconsin village named Withee. Our rail-
road models features of Withee that might
have been there at the turn of the century, the
century before last that is. Withee was a stop
on the Wisconsin Central of that era. Beth’s
Mom grew up in Withee and Beth has took the
train as a child from New Richmond WI to

Power and control signals are applied to the
brass-silver rail through a Digitrax DCC sys-
tem. We have installed two of the several
planned DCC-controlled turnouts. The in-
stalled turnouts define the ends of the town
siding.
Building construction is in its early stages be-

I have a couple of trains I want to sell that I
hardly used. One is a Aristo-Craft C-16 2-8-0
D&RGW ART-80102 in original box and only
ran about twice maybe three times. The other
is a Bachmann Spectrum 2-6-0 Mogul
D&RGW Item Number 81498 in the original
box and ran about six to eight times. Both units
are in very good condition. I don't know if any
of the members would be interested. I would
like to get $200 for the C-16 and $300 for the
2-6-0.
