Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival

Welcome to the

The History Of One Of The Most Unique Wine Festivals On The Central Coast Of California

Welcome to the Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festi-val…A unique, boutique wine festival right in the center of the Central Coast wine region.

17 years ago, this year, a group of community leaders decided that Atascadero needed an event to draw people into the area, to eat in our restaurants, shop in our stores and sleep in our hotels. In other words, they wanted an event that would be a catalyst for promoting Atascadero.

That initial group consisted of representatives of the City of Atascadero, the Chamber of Commerce, and local businesses. People like City Councilman Hal Carden, Com-munity Services Director Brady Cherry, former Chamber Executive Director Micki Ready and business representa-tives Sid Bowen, Jan Bewley and Anthony Farao. They were all involved and they knew it couldn’t be just another event; it had to be something exciting, new and different to Atas-cadero.

Several members of that committee were wine connois-seurs and they believed we could produce a wine festival showcasing our city and our beautiful lake, even though we didn’t have “winery one” in the Atascadero city limits. It was then and there that the Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival was born.

The committee thought that wine tasting would be a big draw, but they also wanted to represent other elements of the local community, so they partnered with artists from the Atascadero Art Association and included a fine art show at the event, along with food vendors from local restaurants and a popular local band. Inviting “local” talent was important to keeping the intended community flavor of the event.

Once the founders committed to the event, several oth-er community members joined that first year. Judy Hutton and I are two of those original members and we are still

serving on the committee today. That first year, in 1995, we probably had 25-30 winer-

ies, about 500 attendees and netted around $3,000. We were elated that we didn’t “go in the hole.” It was decided that year that some of the proceeds would benefit the city’s Charles Paddock Zoo since the event was located at the Atascadero Lake Park, which is the home of the Zoo.

Now, in our 17h year, we hope to donate more proceeds than ever. We have raised over $100,000 for the Zoo and other community projects in Atascadero since our begin-ning in 1995, and each year the event just gets better and better.

A couple of years ago we made some exciting changes. We expanded our event further into the park, so be sure to check the map in this program. You won’t want to miss visiting any of our outstanding wineries, artists, food, and commercial vendors.

The original goal set by the founders to draw people to the City of Atascadero continues to be the focus of the event. We have attendees from all around the state and the country, who have discovered our special “boutique” wine festival. I like to refer to it as being “a delightful gathering of friends of the vine, tasting the best wines offered on the Central Coast, displayed in a Norman Rockwell setting, in an old fashioned park, on the edge of a lake.” What more could you ask for?

This year the committee has put together another out-standing group of wineries, artists, commercial vendors, and culinary offerings, accompanied by the great music of the Mighty Croon Dogs.

We invite you to come out and see for yourself why Atascadero is “on the map” again for providing another memorable event.

Cheers, Barbie

Ryan Adams Born in 1971, Ryan Adams is a 5th generation SLO County native. His passion for art, as seen through pencil drawings, was evi-dent early on. After gradu-ating from Atascadero High School, Adams traveled north to study photogra-phy and painting at HSU. After 20 years of acrylic painting, Ryan has returned home to establish Gallery 41 located at 7010 Morro Road, Atascadero.

Sean Adams Sean Adams aka “The Tiki Man” has been creative in one way or another since childhood, always whit-tling, painting or working with clay. While visiting a friend he learned to carve with a chain saw and start-ed to make Tiki pieces. He usually starts with an idea

and lets the saw in his hands take over. The faces he carves on the tiki are always smiling and happy subjects.

George Asdel

George Asdel makes draw-ings, paintings, lino prints, cards, and poems express-ing the humor he sees in the world. He and his wife Kathie have had galleries in Newfoundland, Canada and Pismo Beach. He taught art at the Charles Paddock zoo. His art is at The Gal-lery at Marina Square, on the Embarcadero, Morro Bay, or georgeasdel.com

Curt Bentzinger Curt Bentzinger’s unique vision and artistic style has earned him the reputa-tion for being one of the most respected photogra-

phers in the Paso Robles community. His ability to capture the moment and highlight genuine beauty such as events, people, and nature, has brought the much needed modern twist to photography. Be-cause of his deep passion for photography the result is authentic and timeless photographs that show-case symbolic beauty.

Deborah Kyle Hintergardt

Deborah Kyle Hintergardt is a Colorist: an artist who is notable by the way in which she uses color. Her colors are bright and refreshing and her subjects are fun and lively. She says, “For me, painting is intuitive not academic. From subject matter, to color choices, to composition, it’s all about how I feel, what makes me happy, what emotions I want to project.”

Greg Mac DougallLocal woodworker Greg MacDougall lives in north-ern San Luis Obispo Coun-ty where he operates a studio from his home on the historical Santa Mar-garita Ranch. The zoo and the wine festival

Creig P. SherburneAtascadero News

The Atascadero Wine Festival began 17 years ago with the intent of making the world a better place in not one, but three significant ways.

First, chairwoman Barbie Butz said, it was to raise some money for the Charles Paddock Zoo — in recent memory, that money has gone to the flamingo and meercat exhibits, plus other construction — and other community organiza-tions.

What that means, Butz said, is the money being spread around is not exclusive to the zoo. Last year’s festival raised money for the zoo, certainly, but also the Lake Park’s band-stand and the library’s new location, among other things.

“Everyone in Atascadero aught to be touched by it,” Butz said. “But we always benefit the zoo in some way.”

The next significant thing the festival does to make the world a better place is setting up one of the largest wine pairings — pairing people with wine, that is — in North County.

This year, 66 wineries are pouring uncountable tastes

while eleven local restaurants will feed hundreds of people as they explore the products of many local artists. And it’s all taking place in one of the nicest places in all of North County.

Seriously, it’s a great place. Stop reading this story right now and look up. You’re probably looking at a glowing can-opy of leaves shading the park. Or maybe you’ll see a gor-geous blue sky, dotted with a few summer clouds.

There are probably children playing in the sand and swinging on the swings. There are probably people doing laps in the lake on paddleboats. The zoo is open and you could meander over to it and check out the fossa. And at least one runner will do a circuit of the area while you’re taking it all in.

And the location is part of why the event has lasted so long. But the other part, according to Butz, is the good people of Atascadero who keep coming year after year, en-abling the organization to donate more than $125,000 to North County needs.

“Last year we raised enough to give $10,000 to the zoo,” Butz said. “It’s a big job, but no job is ever too big if you have the right people.”

LEFT: The bronze tiger guarding the entrance to the zoo may soon double as the flamingo exhibit, if all goes ac-cording to plan. TOP RIGHT: A meercat does its best impression of a bronze tiger in an exhibit that would not exist at all if not for the help of the Atascadero Wine Fest. Deborah Kyle Hintergardt will display some of her artwork at the Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival, which is something she enjoys doing.

“I enjoy the intimate, rather laid-back character of the Atascadero Wine Festival,” Hintergardt said. “It is well run and the artist feels welcomed and appreciated there. The lakeside setting is beautiful and the afternoon breezes are lovely. This will be the first time I’ve shown my work during the evening hours, but feel it will probably make it seem even more enjoyable and laid back.”

The wine festival’s atmosphere is similar to that of the town, which was an attraction to bring Hintergardt here from the Los Angeles area.

“My husband graduated from Cal Poly and always wanted to move back to the area. I prefer living in an ag-riculturally oriented area, so Atascadero was a perfect fit for us. We live in town, but can have horses and a garden. The Central Coast is a wonderful place to live ... and, yes, a beautiful place to paint.”

Painting in the Atascadero area is a sort of realization of a childhood dream for Hintergardt, particularly with the number of horses in the area available for the horse-crazy artist to capture in color.

“My mother was very artistic and painted in oil, acrylic, and watercolor,” Hintergardt said. “I would sit and watch her. Together we watched painting classes on the TV and took a few classes together. When I had my first child, I was going to be a stay-at-home mom and thought I’d have all kinds of free time on my hands, so my mother took me to the local art store and bought me an easel, acrylic paints, canvases and brushes. Before leaving town she gave me a

few lessons and then left me on my own. Needless to say, I seemed to have no free time, but about 10 years later, after my last-born went to kindergarten, I pulled my paints out of storage and just went for it all on my own. I had a blast. Around that time I started to long for the country life I ex-perienced as a child. Painting gave me a way to escape the hustle and bustle of L.A. life.”

After growing up on the family farm in the Midwest, she left to go to school for music, receiving a couple of degrees in vocal performance. She then lived in Rhode Island for three years before marrying and settling in Los Angeles for the next 13 years. In 2004, she was able to move north, settling in Atascadero in the middle of her favorite subject matter.

“I love to paint animals,” Hintergardt said. “Of course, I’m still painting horses. My own are often my subjects. I love old barns and abandoned buildings. There is some-thing special about an old building that has served some-one well over the years. Rural landscapes are my focus right now, and here on the Central Coast there is a plethora of subjects.”

She considers herself a colorist and is noted for the in-tense, bright colors she uses in her work.

“I love intense color,” Hintergardt said. “In life I don’t like to blend in; I guess the same goes for my art. Certain colors and color combinations evoke a strong emotional response in me. Color represents life, fun, commitment, and vivac-ity. For me, painting is intuitive, not academic. Thinking too much always seems to get me into trouble. From subject matter, to color choices, to composition, it’s all about how I feel, what makes me happy, what emotions I want to proj-ect.”

The Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival is set for Satur-day, June 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Atascadero Lake Park.

One local winery that will be on hand on Saturday, June 23 at the Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival is Ancient Peaks Winery in Santa Margarita.

The winery is owned by Doug Filipponi, Rob Rossi and Carl Wittstrom and their families. The wines are made by winemaker Mike Sinor.

Grapes were fi rst planted on Santa Margarita Ranch by Franciscan missionaries in 1780.

As Sinor describes the vineyard’s rich history, as well as its unique soil properties in detail — the land boasts shale, sedimentary, ancient sea bed, volcanic and granitic — it’s obvious that the vintner loves his job.

In 1994, Sinor worked the harvest at Robert Mondavi-owned Byron Winery in the Santa Maria Valley, eventually rising to assistant winemaker. A few trips to France and a couple years later, he went on to fi nd acclaim as winemaker at Domaine Alfred in the Edna Valley.

The passionate vintner has been crafting award-winning wine at Ancient Peaks since the winery’s fi rst, 2005 vintage.

Margarita Vineyard, which spans over 966 acres, is lo-

cated on the expansive 14,000-acre Santa Margarita Ranch property owned by the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms.

“We have great soil and weather, but you can only go so far on that,” Sinor said. “In order to bring that to frui-tion, you have to have good people and that’s defi nitely our sense of priorities.”

Ancient Peaks owners said they consider themselves honored to be stewards of the area’s rich winegrowing leg-acy, which began hundreds of years ago with Franciscan missionaries.

The vineyard is an outlier, as the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles appellation, located in the Santa Lucia Mountain range just 14 miles from the ocean.

Overlooking the rows and rows of vines from Oyster Ridge — perhaps the most photogenic spot of the morn-ing — it’s hard to imagine that eons ago, much of the land was underwater.

Sinor says that history adds complexity and depth to his wine.

“When the vines grow in a soil that’s high in calcium, [with] a high level of porosity — the water goes right through it — the blocks tend to have a bit smaller canopies, smaller berries and the fruits are more intense,” he said.

The sprawling, oak-studded vineyard boasts 16 wine

grape varietals, from cabernet sauvignon to rousanne, muscat blanc and grenache noir.

“We really design around the diversity of blocks and soil and being able to make a diversity of wine,” Sinor said.

The vineyard is SIP Certified and each block is micro-managed for optimal flavor — fitting, as the winemaker is a self-proclaimed “fanatic” when it comes to his craft. The hard work keeps paying off for Ancient Peaks.

Among other sparkling accomplishments, Wine Enthu-siast Magazine recently placed three Ancient Peaks wines — the ‘07 Oyster Ridge, ‘06 Zinfandel and ‘08 Merlot — in the 90- to 93-point range. When it comes to success, Sinor said it’s simple.

“It’s not something you just phone in — you need to be in tune with [the process] and be in touch with it — and not just with the blocks, but with sub-parts of the blocks,” he said. “The attention [Ancient Peaks Winery] has gathered really comes down to the attention we put in. We’re farm-ers first and foremost, and from there, we go on to make the wines.”
