Company Introduction Athenee Importers, founded in 1974 by Anthony and Giota Englisis, is one of the largest importers from Greece and Cyprus into the United States of wine, spirits, beers and water. The Athenee portfolio is currently represented in over 30 states throughout the country. We believe that the future of Greek wines lies in the hands of small producers. They possess the passion and drive to produce wines of ex-ceptional quality and unique character. In almost two decades, the Greek wine industry has undergone radical change. In the late 1970’s and 80’s, the Greek wine industry was controlled by the large wineries that were geared towards making wine for the masses. As a result, very little attention was paid to quality and the reputation of Greek wines were tarnished. Upon Greece’s admission in to the European Union (EU), fund-ing was allocated to rebuilding Greece’s wineries and vineyards. A combination of private and EU funds has resulted in a silent yet dramatic overhaul in the modern Greek wine market. Today, the majority of winemakers are Greek in origin and have trained at the finest Universities throughout the world, including UC Davis. A prime example can be seen in the picture to your right. Domain Spiropoulos’ winery is state of the art and boasts carefully trained and pruned vineyards. It is one of the few wineries that is certi-fied to grow grapes organically for its wines as well. To the right is a picture of the Gentilini Winery, from Cephalonia. In 1997, the Englisis’ daughter, Andrea, joined the Athenee team. Her passion and love for wine can be

seen in the Athenee Importers company website and in the pursuit of introducing Greek wines into the mainstream market. Ms. Englisis returns to Greece each year at harvest to lend a hand and to learn more about the art of winemaking. Her focus within the company is to educate sales staffs and make Greek wines more ap-proachable in the US market. In 2007, Ms. Englisis received her Diploma in Wine Studies from the WSET. Ms. Englisis is the only person within the Greek wine community to obtain such a prestigious degree. In the summer of 1999, Mr. Anthony Englisis passed away while on vacation in Greece. Since that time, the mother and daughter team has further strengthened Athenee Importers and are confidently leading the company to greater heights in the new millennium. Their focus on boutique wineries that produce quality wines

at reasonable prices is their first and foremost goal. They believe that the wines excellent values and ap-proachability will be the leading force behind the success of Greek wines in the United States. Athenee Importers currently represents over twenty wineries, distilleries and breweries from Greece and Cyprus . Our goal is to continue expanding our portfolio while maintaining our policy of representing wineries that are not willing to sacrifice quality for quantity. With this mindset, Athenee Importers be-lieves that it will remain one of the strongest importers for products from Southern Europe for decades to come.

Guide to Greek Grape Varieties

White Grape Varieties Assyrtiko (Ah-seer-tee-ko): One of Greece’s finest grapes. Assyrtiko is the main grape in the Santorini appellation. This grape variety is unique because it flourishes in the extremely poor, phylloxera-free vol-canic soil of Santorini. Assyrtiko is able to achieve ripeness while maintaining high acidity in a hot grow-ing climate. In Santorini, wines have a subtle bouquet of honeysuckle and citrus on the nose with intense minerality and acidity on the palate. Assyrtiko also grows on the mainland, but with different results.Assyrtiko wines from other parts of Greece exhibit more floral notes as well as breadth on the palate. Wines made from Assyrtiko have excellent staying power and make excellent accompaniments to fish dishes and cuisines that are otherwise hard to pair with wine, such as Indian and Sushi. Athiri (A-th-ee-ri): Planted throughout Southern Greece, the Cyclades and Dodecanese Islands. Athiri vines are vigorous and productive. Wines made from this grape can be high in alcohol but low in acidity. When grown at higher altitudes, the wines give an elegant minerality and floral notes. The grapes charac-teristics include a melon aroma and a creamy texture on the palate. Athiri is often used to round out the severe and angular characteristics of Assyrtiko. On the island of Rhodes, it is used to make the appellation white wine. Malagouzia: An extremely aromatic and rich grape variety that is planted in Northern Greece in areas such as Macedonia and Thessaly. Malagouzia is harvested in early August in order to preserve the intense aromatic qualities of the variety. Wines made from this grape variety possess a unique aromatic bouquet that is filled with peach, pear and citrus aromas, yet are typically low in acidity (around 11.5%). Malagouzia is enjoying a renaissance and an increase in popularity as more well made wines are entering the marketplace. Muscat Blanc: One of the oldest and finest varieties in the Muscat family. It is grown throughout Greece and is used mainly for the production of world-class dessert wines, such as in the appellation of Samos. The grapes have a long maturity period and are harvested in mid to late September. Muscat Blanc pro-duces dry wines as well that have a lower acidity than their sweet counterparts, but both enjoy complex aromas of rose petals, fruit and bergamot flavors. Robola: A grape variety that is predominantly planted on the Ionian islands of Cephalonia and Zakynthos. Robola prefers dry and rocky soils that are somewhat mountainous and limestone in composition. In order to maintain acidity and alcohol, the grape is picked in mid-August to early September. Wines produced from the Robola grape are aromatic with delicate citrus and mineral aromas. Acidity is balanced and crisp and medium bodied. Robola-based wines are approachable to many palates. Savatiano: Greece’s most widely planted grape variety that is found throughout most of central Greece. It is a high yielding variety that is naturally low in acidity but when cultivated in cooler climates on infertile soil has excellent aromatics and acidity. When made as a single variety wine, Savatiano is an excellent accompaniment to foods because it is easy to drink and not overly complex. This grape is usually blended with Roditis, which has good acidity, to make a wine that is easy to drink but with better structure. Sava-tiano is also one of the two permitted grape varieties for the production of Retsina. Pink Skinned Grape Varieties Moschofilero (Mo-sko-fee-le-ro): A pink-skinned grape that produces dry and aromatic white wines that have moderate acidity, In excellent years, Moschofilero has the ability to produce wines with alcohol lev-els of 12.5%. Wines produced from this grape are aromatic with a delicate, perfumed bouquet with bal-anced acidity. Moschofilero-based wines are very approachable and can accompany many different types of food and can be served as an aperitif. Moschofilero also produces an aromatic and delicate rose as well as a sparkling wine.

Guide to Greek Grape Varieties

Pink Skinned Varieties (Continued) Roditis: The grape is widely planted throughout Southern and Central Greece. Roditis is a pink skinned variety that is presently made into a dry white wine. Since the vine is vigorous, care must be taken to de-crease yields, otherwise the resulting wine lacks aromatic qualities . When grown at an altitude above 450 meters, the resulting wines posses ripe melon flavors and an intense structure on the palate It is commonly used as a blending agent with Savatiano or Moschofilero to increase a wine’s acidity level. Red Grape Varieties Amoryano (A-more-yah-no): A rare, red grape grown in the Aegean islands and Crete. It is also called Mandilaria and Kountoura Mavri. Brisk intense aromas with a spicy and dark warm red color characterize the reds. Agiorgitiko (Ai-your-yee-tee-ko): One of the most important Greek red varieties in terms of international recognition and palatability. The grape as seen as “polydynamic”-meaning that it has the ability to pro-duce a wide variety of wines. Wines range from rose to Beaujolais-styled to with aging potential. Agior-gitiko is at its best when planted on hillsides at a high elevation with high vine density. Characteristics typical of this grape include black berry and black cherry aromas on the nose as well as an appealing earthiness, good tannins and medium to full body. Limnio: An ancient variety originally from the island of Limnos. Limnio vines are commonly found throughout Northern Greece. The grape thrives in poor dry rocky soils and harvested in mid-to late Sep-tember. Limnio wines are known for their high alcohol content and light to medium body. On the nose, sage, laurel and pepper are present. Wines made exclusively from Limnio are rare. It is very common to see Cabernet Sauvignon blended into the wine in order to increase body and add complexity. It is also common to see smaller amounts of Limnio blended into other varieties in order to add complexity to the wines. Mandilaria: One of the most deeply colored varieties in Greece. Its birthplace is the Aegean, but is in-creasingly being planted elsewhere in Greece to add color to red wines. Mandilaria is low in acidity, light in the palate and lacks intense aromas and flavors. It produces the red wines of the Cyclade islands and is also known as Amoryano. Mavrodaphne: A grape cultivated in the Northern Peloponnese, specifically around the area of Patras. The Patras appellation calls for a sweet wine that is made solely from the Mavrodaphne grape. When vini-fied dry, Mavrodaphne is blended into wines made with Cabernet Sauvignon or Agiorgitiko to add aromat-ics and texture on the palate. Refusco: Although this is an Italian grape variety, Refusco has been brought to Greece and is the main component in the Mercouri Estate’s red wine. This grape is grown at the winery’s estate in Ilias, in the Western Peloponnese. Refusco makes wines with lively acidity, ruby red color and medium body. These wines can last upwards of ten years during exceptional vintages. However, it is quite common to blend in up to 15% dry Mavrodaphne to add character and complexity to the overall wine. Xinomavro (Zi-no-mav-ro): The dominant grape variety of Northern Greece, Xinomavro is the grape of Naoussa. Xinomavro ripens in late September to early October. The vines are sensitive to drought and susceptible to oidium. The name “Xinomavro” refers to its high acidity and color. This variety is capable of producing wines in a variety of styles. Xinomavro thrives on hillside vineyards where the soil composi-tion is a mixture of sand, loam and limestone. Oak aging is essential to Xinomavro wines, as it softens them and makes them more drinkable. Typically, wines made from Xinomavro after at their best at least five years after they are bottled.
