Cornerstone Christian SchoolsAthletic Department Mission Statement

Cornerstone Christian Schools will develop students spiritually, physically, and personally through participation in interscholastic athletics. Practices, games and related activities will exist in an environment of unprecedented excellence to develop Christian character, personal success skills and athletic excellence in each student-athlete.

Philosophy of Christian Interscholastic Athletics

“Do you not know that in a race all runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way to get the prize.” I Cor. 9:24

Over the course of a student-athlete’s career he may spend more time with coaches than any other authority figure, except his parents. This investment of time develops a unique relationship of coach-player, employer-employee and mentor-apprentice that cannot be neutral in its effect. The intentional and incidental values conveyed by a coach to his players, positive or negative, will have a life-lasting impact on each athlete. When this occurs within the context of a Christian athletic program committed to unprecedented excellence, the results can exponentially enhance the student’s preparation for a life that glorifies God.

Philosophy

We are instructed to strive to be the best, but to honor God in the process. Winning is a measure of successful preparation and performance, but complete victory is only achieved when Christ is glorified through each step of the process.

Interscholastic athletics are co-curricular, not an extracurricular. The Cornerstone athletic program will work in partnership with the philosophies, values and objectives of the school to create an environment that is an extension of the school rather than a free-standing entity.

Competitive athletics exist in a demanding physical, emotional, and personal environment where lessons in character, teamwork, managing adversity and personal excellence are learned. These lessons in “success skills” accompany those learned in the classroom to produce an individual prepared to excel upon graduation.

Success skills are best mastered when an athlete is systematically placed in more competitive environments. Maximizing these learning opportunities necessitates creating the most competitive program possible within the mission of the school.

Fan Code of Conduct

Cornerstone Christian is grateful for the support of its fans and appreciates your efforts to support the Warriors. As you cheer us on, remember to our opponents, their fans and the officials you not only represent CCS, but Christians in general. One of the quickest ways we can lose our witness is through the words we speak. Please keep the following in mind at all Cornerstone games:

Officials are humans who work a full day before arriving on campus. Respect their decisions and the difficult job they have.

Do not heckle or direct comments to specific players, coaches or officials.

Show respect to the opposing team and fans. Their athletes have worked as hard as ours and their fans love their athletes as much as we love ours.

Avoid the temptation to engage in a war of words with opposing fans.

Celebrate our success, not the opponent’s failure.

Show Christian class and character in both victory and defeat.

Fans that cannot follow these guidelines may be asked to leave the event.

Costs and Fees

Cornerstone does not charge a participation fee for secondary athletics. However, there are normally some costs associated with playing. The costs of these items are generally billed to the family’s RenWeb accounts. The most common are:

A. Items Students Keep

Items vary by sport. Some are required, others are optional and typically include:

Team T-shirt, hats Practice gear/travel gear (high school) Baseball gloves, shoes, tennis racquets, golf clubs Pictures End-of-season banquet

of the item.

7

Page 8: ATHLETES HANDBOOK - s3. Web viewCornerstone Christian. ... will have a life-lasting impact on each athlete. When this occurs within the context of a Christian athletic program committed

D. Fines for Ejections (High School)

TAPPS assesses member schools a fine of $50 for the first athlete ejected from a sport over the course of a season, $100 for the second and $150 for the third. Ejections during state semi-finals or finals begin at $150.Cornerstone Christian will bill ejected athletes $50 for each ejection prior to the state semi-finals or finals and $150 for each during a semi-final or final.

Tryouts Information regarding tryouts will be sent to all secondary families via email and to the students through daily

announcements. All students in good standing may try out for a team. At the time of tryouts students must be enrolled for the semester the sport begins. Athletes must attend tryouts. Vacations are not an excused absence. Failure to attend all tryouts may

result in being cut or placed on a sub-varsity team. Coaches will make arrangements for athletes still participating in the previous season, injured, or who have

unusual circumstances beyond the athlete’s control. Coaches will explain the tryout process and team selection criteria prior to beginning tryouts. The decisions of the coaching staff are final.

PracticeStudents and parents should be aware all Cornerstone athletic teams require a significant time commitment that may overlap with other school activities. In some cases this may necessitate the student choosing one or the other. Also, athletes are expected to practice and play games over vacation as the schedule requires. Athletes who find it difficult to make the necessary team commitment should reevaluate participation in that sport.

Players are required to attend all regularly scheduled practices. Failure to attend practice or arriving late/leaving early is grounds to limit playing time or suspend an athlete. Athletes who take on other activities that require them to consistently miss practices or games may be demoted or

removed from the team. Three or more unexcused absences may result in removal from the team. Students will not be penalized if arriving late from a verified tutorial session.

Practice Times

Seventh and eighth grade practices generally begin at 7:00 am and finish at 8:20. Sixth grade practice during their athletic period. High school practices being at approximately 3:00 and finish by 5:45 Teams in the state play-off may have additional practice time. Practice is limited to one hour-per-day during finals.

Fall Pre-season Practice

High school fall sport begin the first Monday of August. Middle school fall sports begin the Monday of the week prior to classes beginning.

Three-Day Weekends

Practices and competition normally will be scheduled.

Thanksgiving

Practice or games may be scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Teams with a play-off game on Thanksgiving weekend may practice on Wednesday and Thursday as well.

Christmas Vacation

No practice or games will be held for five consecutive days including December 24-26. Coaches will make parents aware of the Christmas practice schedule at the beginning of the season.

Easter

No games or practices will be scheduled from Good Friday through Easter Sunday.

Spring Break

Due to the different school calendars of district members, it is likely games and practices will be necessary during spring break. Parents will be informed of the team’s spring break schedule during the preseason team meeting.

Out-of-Season Practice (high school)

Per TAPPS by-laws, Coaches may only work with out-of-season athletes during athletic period during the school year.

Summer Practices

During the summer CCS coaches may spend a combined total of 15 hours-per-week with an athlete. This includes all strength, conditioning and agility training as well as all sport-specific practices, meetings etc. Summer league games and associated travel do not count against the 15 hour limit.

Participation in Contest

Team Sports

Sub varsity – The goal of sub varsity teams is to develop athletes for varsity. To that end, every attempt should be made to play each athlete in all competition.

At the varsity level playing time is solely is at the discretion of the coaching staff.

Individual Sports

Coaches of sports with limited entries should inform the team at the beginning of the season how athletes will be ranked for participation and should provide regularly scheduled challenge matches or similar format for athletes to improve their standing.

Participation in Overlapping Sports/Activities

CCS Multiple Sport Participation

Athletes may participate in an individual sport and a team sport during the same season under the following conditions:

o Approval of both coaches.o Team events take priority over individual events.

Individual sports are: cross country, track, tennis and golf. All others are team sports. Athletes may only participate in one team sport per season.

Club Sport Participation

Athletes may simultaneously participate on club teams under the following conditions:

CCS teams have priority over the club team. Practices or games missed because of club events are considered unexcused and are subject to disciplinary action

up to dismissal from the team. Failure to participate in all portions of a CCS practice due to club concerns is unacceptable and subject to

disciplinary action. Missed practice or games due to club events may prevent an athlete from lettering.

Concurrent Participation in Athletics and other School Activities

Athletes who wish to concurrently participate in other school activities should request a meeting between the coach, the director of the second activity and the athlete to work out a calendar in advance for the overlapping time. All three parties must agree to the plan before proceeding.

10

Page 11: ATHLETES HANDBOOK - s3. Web viewCornerstone Christian. ... will have a life-lasting impact on each athlete. When this occurs within the context of a Christian athletic program committed

While CCS encourages students to be involved in a broad range of activities, sometimes there are simply too many conflicts to make concurrent participation possible. Students who wish to have a significant role in athletics and other school activities concurrently need to realistically consider their ability to be in two places at once, maintain their grades and provide their best efforts to all those counting on them.

Summer Teams

Cornerstone Christian normally has teams from multiple sports participate in summer leagues. Although these are not school sponsored teams, CCS has made our facilities available when possible for practice and games. Please be aware of the following regarding summer league teams:

Participation in summer league is not a requirement to make the CCS’s team the following year. CCS coaches are not under contract or paid by CCS to coach these teams. CCS has no control over the fees or schedules of these leagues. CCS carries no insurance on athletes participating in summer leagues.

Failure to Complete the Season

Students who make a team are making a commitment to the team and coach until the end of the season.

Students are expected to attend all practices and games until the team has completed its season. Students may not begin a subsequent sport until the conclusion of the current one.

o The current season coach can allow an athlete to participate in the next sport at his discretion. Students who do not fulfill their commitment, with the exception of illness or injury, will not be allowed to

participate in any sport for the following two seasons. o Coaches can choose to release an athlete who is in good standing, but rarely plays.

Students who remain on the team past the first competition are considered committed for the season.

Athletic Period

Athletic period is held during first period for seventh and eighth grades, fourth period for sixth grade and eighth period for high school athletes. It is designed to prepare our athletes for their upcoming season and improve their general athleticism. Athletes who are not in-season will report to athletic period daily. Typical activities include:

Resistance training for explosiveness and muscular endurance Speed and agility training Plyometrics Skill work with the coaches of the athlete’s next sport

Students receive academic credit for athletic period. As such, daily grades are given for participation and being properly dressed. Several times during the semester athletes will be tested on standardized strength, agility and cardiovascular fitness assessments. A final will also be given each semester.

11

Page 12: ATHLETES HANDBOOK - s3. Web viewCornerstone Christian. ... will have a life-lasting impact on each athlete. When this occurs within the context of a Christian athletic program committed

Athletic period is for athletes only. Students who are not planning to participate on an athletic team must register for the appropriate physical education class.

Academic Work and Athletic Participation

School Attendance and Athletic Participation

Students who missed school with an unexcused absence may not practice or play that day. Students who miss class for a school-sponsored event may participate that day. Students may miss portions of up to four periods of a school day for excused reasons and participate. Missed class time on Friday does not affect weekend participation.

Early Dismissal Times

The athletic department will submit early dismissal rosters to the secondary office for approval. Students may not be released prior to the time set by the athletic department. Should the contest be cancelled or the game time change the students must return to class. Athletes who are academically ineligible may not be dismissed early to travel with the team.

Missed School Work

Assignments due the day an athlete will miss class must be turned in prior to leaving campus. Work turned in after the student returns to class will be considered late.

If a student will not be on-campus at all during school hours, work may be turned in the next day. The student is responsible to make arrangements with his or her teacher(s) to cover material and assignments

missed during the time the student was absent.

Athletic Academic Eligibility

Eligibility Standards

Eligibility checks begin each semester on Monday of the fourth week of classes and continue weekly until the end of the term.

Student athletes are eligible unless they have two or more classes below a 70%. Students with two or more grades below 70% may practice, but not participate in games until cleared by a

subsequent eligibility check.

Athletic Study Hall

Students with one or more classes under 70% are required to attend athletic study hall during their athletic period until a subsequent eligibility check shows all grades passing.

Seventh and eighth grade athletes can practice from 7:00-7:45 and then report to study hall during first period athletics.

Sixth grade athletes have study hall during their athletic period. High school students report to study hall at the start of athletic period and may go to practice when released.

Semester Grades

Students who fail one class first semester are ineligible for the first two weeks of second semester classes. During this time they must attend athletic study hall in order to practice. They may return to competition if they are passing all classes on Monday of the third week of classes.

Students who fail two or more classes first semester are ineligible to compete until the first grade check of the second semester. During this time they must attend athletic study hall in order to practice. They may return to competition if they are passing all classes at the first eligibility check.

Other Eligibility Rules

If a student is ineligible for more than three weeks in a season the athlete may be removed from the team. Eligibility status carries over from one sport to the next as seasons change. Ineligible athletes may not miss class to travel with the team. Students, parents, and coaches are not allowed to pressure, coerce, or in any other way attempt to influence

teachers to change grades or compromise their academic integrity. Attempts to do so may result in disciplinary action by the athletic director or school principal.

The principal and athletic director together may review and rule on truly unusual eligibility circumstances.

Sports Medicine

Cornerstone Christian is blessed to have a full-time and part-time licensed athletic trainer to meet the sports medicine needs of our student-athletes. This is extremely rare among private schools in Texas. Athletic trainers are sports medicine professionals who meet the following minimum criteria to be licensed in the State of Texas:

Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in sports medicine Have at least 1,500 hours of clinical experience before sitting for the state exam Passed the practical and written exams by the state board

The sports medicine staff at CCS works closely with our team doctors. They are experts in preventing and treating athletic injuries and can perform physical therapy at CCS under the direction of a physician.

Injuries

Athlete should make the sports medicine staff aware of any injuries as soon as possible. If needed, the sports medicine staff can coordinate doctor’s appointments. Cornerstone Christian strongly recommends the use of doctors specializing in sports medicine whenever

possible. Athletes whose injuries required a doctor’s attention cannot return to practice or competition without a

doctor’s note. Athletes should make the athletic training staff and their coach aware if they are asthmatic, allergic to bee

stings, diabetic, and the like. If needed, athletes should provide the sports medicine staff with an extra inhaler, glucose, etc.

Physicals

All student-athletes are required to have current a physical on file with the Sports Medicine Department prior to being allowed to participate in practices or competitions or athletic period.

Cornerstone offers on-site physicals every year in May for all CCS athletes. The cost for 2017 is $25.

Insurance

CCS carries secondary insurance on all athletes In order to be eligible for coverage, the athlete and parent must complete an injury report on any injury

requiring medical attention. School-related summer camps and summer athletic leagues are not covered by the school’s insurance. Insurance questions should be directed to Jeannette Rainey, Head Athletic Trainer at 979-8303.

Letterman jackets are considered a part of the school uniform.

Athletic Uniform Stewardship

Athletes may not check out a uniform until the previous season’s has been turned in or paid for.

All athletic gear must be signed for by the athlete on athletic department check-out sheets. Athletes are responsible for the care of their uniforms. Athletes are required to pay for lost, stolen or excessively damaged uniforms at replacement cost. Uniforms should be washed separately in cold water. All uniforms should be hung to dry. Heat from dryers ruins silk screening! Uniforms are to be checked in after school on the Monday after the team’s last competition. After two weeks athletes will be charged a $25 late fee. After 30 days, they will be billed for any

outstanding gear.

All-District and All-State Honors for Varsity Players

CCS coaches nominate our athletes for all-district honors at their end-of-season district meeting. However, they cannot vote for our players. The all-district team is not released until the last district team is eliminated from the state play-offs.

First-team all-district players are nominated for all-state honors at the all-state meeting by a representative of our district. This is normally the coach of the district champion.

Players who do not letter as a result of disciplinary action will not be nominated for first-team all-district recognition.

Page 19: ATHLETES HANDBOOK - s3. Web viewCornerstone Christian. ... will have a life-lasting impact on each athlete. When this occurs within the context of a Christian athletic program committed

Music with lyrics appropriate for a Christian school and consistent with a Christian walk may be played in locker rooms, weight rooms and at practice.

Coaches have the final word on what is appropriate or inappropriate. Individuals or teams that consistently play inappropriate music will lose music privileges. Game day music in athletic venues will be provided by the athletic department.

Athlete Behavior, Bullying, Hazing

Cornerstone athletes have the privilege of serving as ambassadors not only for their school, but Christ as well. As such:

Athletes are expected to adhere to the letter and spirit of all school student conduct policies and any team rules on and off-campus. Failure to do so may result is discipline by either the athletic department or secondary office.

Bullying and hazing are in opposition to Christian brotherhood, CCS values and in some circumstance state law. Any such acts will not be tolerated by Cornerstone and are grounds for discipline up to removal from the school.

Parental Responsibilities

Participation in athletics at CCS is truly a family affair. In order for our athletes to have the best experience possible it is necessary for our parents to take an active role in their child’s athletic endeavors.

Pray for your child’s coach. Make sure your athlete is on time to all events. Make sure your athlete has all necessary uniforms and equipment. Encourage your athlete to maintain good communication with his or her coach. Follow the procedures outlined in the grievance section should a problem arise between the coach and your

athlete. Look for ways to assist the coach or team parent.

Parents may “suspend” a student for family discipline reason.

Considered an excused absence. May impact athlete’s ability to letter or qualify for team awards

19

Team Parent-Athlete MeetingThere will be a mandatory meeting for all parents and athletes at the beginning of each season.

Communication with ParentsEmail and announcements posted on the CCS athletic department homepage are the primary ways coaches and the athletic department communicates with parents.

Please make sure you have an active account. Contact Cori Baker in the athletic office at 979-8303 if you have any questions.

Service Hours at Home Games Parents are needed to assist with admissions, concessions, filming, statistics and other functions associated with

hosting home contests. All are eligible for service hours. The athletic events coordinator will contact you through email needed. All volunteers must have completed the school background check.

Grievance Procedures Over the course of a season misunderstandings or disagreements may arise between an athlete and a coach. Should this occur the biblical principle of conflict management established in Matthew Chapter 18 will be used to resolve the problem.

It is important to note that when a conflict does arise it is between the athlete and the coach, not the parents and the coach, or the parents and the athletic director. As such, the following protocol will be followed for conflict resolution:

The athlete meets with the coach. The parents and athlete meet with the coach. The parents, athlete, and coach meet with the athletic director.

20
