Reasons To Be A Multi-Sport Athlete
1. Sport Skills Transfer
All athletic movements transfer—quickness, running, jumping, agility, throwing, etc. For
instance, jumping for a basketball is similar and builds the same muscles needed to push off
the blocks and have a good kick in swimming. (Around 70% of NFL Draft picks were former
multi-sport athletes)
2. Multi-Sport Athletes Have Higher Sport IQs
They develop a feel for any game they play. They are more creative and less mechanical in
their approach. Being a bench player on the basketball team is a different experience than
being a starting pitcher on the baseball team. It's an opportunity to broaden their experiences,
socially and developmentally.
3. Fewer Overuse Injuries
Growing bodies can become overstressed by repetition and that stress can lead to injuries. A
lack of rest and recovery time in year-round sports exacerbates the problem. Studies show
that playing multiple sports leads to better muscle, motor and skill development. It promotes
general athleticism, balance, speed and agility.
4. Multi-Sport Athletes Suffer Less Burnout
Athletes maintain their passion by taking breaks and time off. Kids who spend too much time
focusing on one sport risk tiring of the sport all together. Specializing raises expectations and
pressure on young athletes. Having a variety of experiences keeps things interesting, the
monotony of a single sport goes away, and so does that pressure.
5. Multi-Sport Athletes Learn to Compete
Each sport is different and requires different levels of focus and resiliency. It's an opportunity
to become a better competitor and all-around athlete, the kind that coaches value because they
are flexible, multi-dimensional, exposed to many situations and coachable. If they learn to
compete early, it will transfer into other areas later on.
6. Exposure To Different Kids
Exposing kids to different sports allows them to share teammate experiences and make
memories with a diverse group of peers. It helps them expand their social circle and their
opportunities for interaction.
7. Not Putting All Your Eggs In One Basket
Playing only one sport limits your options. An injury, a bad experience or a reduced role on a
team can bring an abrupt end to an athletic career. Such a small number of high school
athletes move on to play a sport in college; even fewer earn an athletic scholarship. If the goal
is to play as long as possible, it makes sense to play as many sports as possible. Just ask
Derek Jeter, who played baseball and basketball in high school, or Robert Griffin III, who
played football, baseball and ran track.
• ACADEMICS− We will stress upholding the high academic standards of this great school.
• CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT− Our program will focus on developing young men through character education.
• LEADERSHIP TRAINING− Developing leaders and providing opportunities to lead.
• COMMUNITY SERVICE− Giving back to the community.
• THE VIKING WAY− We will be “The Class of Fort Bend ISD”
• ACADEMICS− Coaches will check grades each week for every student in football.
− Students with 75 or below in any class will be given a form with the class and the current grade.
− Coaches will contact teacher to tell them to expect the student to approach them regarding their grade.
− The student is required to talk with teacher about their grade AND attend tutorials during that week.
− The teacher acknowledges on form that student has communicated with them and attended tutorials.
− The students are required to keep this sheet and return to coach at the end of the week. If the student
has turned in the sheet with verification from the teacher that he did communicate about his grade and
attend tutorials, then he will be cleared.
− Grades will be checked again before the start of the next week.
− Our goal is to provide support to the teacher, to stress the importance of academics to our student
athletes and teach to them to be responsible for their grades.
• CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT− Our program will focus on developing young men through character education.
