WHAT IS A LEATHERNECK?: Western Illinois holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks,” in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine’s official seal, bulldog mascot and nickname.

ONCE A LEATHERNECK, ALWAYS A LEATHERNECK: Two members with the Football program know what it takes to serve as a Leatherneck. Sophomore fullback Mike Harmon is a 24-year old who spent four years and three months of active duty in the Marine Corps. The Peoria, Ill., native served three tours in Iraq in Infantry and was the Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year in 2008... Head strength and conditioning coach Chris Anderson served from 1997-2000 in the Corps. He joined the Leatherneck Athletic Department in May 2006.

07th DEFENSE BATTLE FLAG: The 2010 Western Illinois de-fense is known as the “107th” since it is the 107th defense to ever play football at Western Illinois University. Being as Western Illinois is the Leathernecks, the defense developed a “battle flag” that rep-resents them as a unit. The motto that was selected for the 107th is a Latin phrase that translates “It is Ours.”... The 107th Defense

is divided up by class from the Gener-als (seniors), the Colonels (juniors), the Majors (sophomores), the Cap-tains (redshirt-freshmen), down to the Lieutenants (freshman)... The 107th is different than any previous or future battle flag, just as this year’s defense is different from any past or future de-

fensive units. It will be proudly carried and defended into each and every battle this season.

SUCCESS IN THE 2000s: Despite a slow end to the end of the 2000s, Western Illinois posted 61 wins during the decade - the third-most wins by the Leathernecks in a 10-year span. 1903-09: 14-16-2 (.469); 1910-19: 28-28-3 (.500)1920-29: 33-33-10 (.469); 1930-39: 38-35-5 (.519)1940-49: 29-45-6 (.400); 1950-59: 68-18-6 (.772)1960-69: 45-41-2 (.523); 1970-79: 59-42-2 (.583)1980-89 ..................52-55-1 ... . .4861990-99 ..................71-45-1 ... . .6112000-09 ..................61-53-0 ... . .583

THREE SELECTED PRESEASON ALL-MVFC: Preseason All-Americans Kyle Glazier (Geneseo/Geneseo), Lito Senatus (Mi-ami, FL/Southwest) and Todd Speight (Bradenton, FL/Southeast) represented Western on the preseason squad. Glazier was one of four linebackers selected, Senatus was one of three wide receivers and Speight was the lone return specialist. Southern Illinois received 30 of the 36 first-place votes, totaling 312 points in the preseason poll. South Dakota State (2 first-place votes, 252 points), Illinois State (3 first-place votes, 249 points) and Northern Iowa (1 vote, 244 points) were a close second, third and fourth, respectively... Missouri State (164 points), North Da-kota State (151) and Youngstown State (130) were picked ahead of Western (70) with Indiana State (47) picked ninth.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE CONTACTS

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE SCHEDULE

STATISTICAL COMPARISON

SCOUTING THE JACKRABBITS

ALL-TIME SERIES: This is the eighth meeting between the two programs, but only the third as Missouri Valley Football Conference members... South Dakota State has won the past two games, ending Western Illinois’ three-game win streak in the series.

SCOUTING THE JACKRABBITS: South Dakota State can argu-ably stake claim as one of the best 0-4 teams in the country... After a bye week to start the season, SDSU traveled to Delaware (now #2), then lost to a nationally-ranked Illinois State team at home... The Jackrabbits held No. 8 Nebraska to 17 points, then most recently lost at nationally-ranked Northern Iowa... SDSU’s losing streak of five straight dates back to the opening round playoff loss last year at Montana. The Jackrabbits’ last win came in the regular season finale at Hanson Field, a 27-7 win over the Leathernecks... Preseason All-American running back Kyle Minett ranks fifth in the league and 19th nationally averaging 100 yards per game. A member of the Payton Award preseason Watch List, Minett ranks 48th in the country with 122 all-purpose yards per game... Derek Domino leads the Valley and ranks fifth averaging 12.3 tackles per game... Dean Priddy stands 10th nationally with his 42.3 yards per punt average.

DID YOU KNOW: Western Illinois and South Dakota State are both affiliate members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference... The two programs are both members of The Summit League in other sports.

LEATHERNECKS IN THE POLLS: During Mark Hendrickson’s tenure as acting head coach, and now this year his first as the program’s head coach, the Leathernecks have been ranked in 11 polls since the start of the 2008 season... With this week’s 20th ranking in both national polls, Western returned to the Top 25 poll for the first time since November 17, 2008 (23rd). That season the Leathernecks peaked at No. 12 twice (both occurances under Coach Hendrickson), their highest ranking since 2003... The No. ranking indicates Western’s higher ranking that week between The Sports Network/Fathead.com and FCS Coaches ‘Top 25’ polls. 500 AND COUNTING: Leatherneck Football hit a milestone in the 56-14 win over Sam Houston State. That marked the 500th career win in Western Illinois his-tory... Now in the 107th year of the storied program, the Fighting Leathernecks own the highest winning percent-age of all the Division I pro-grams in the state of Illinois (.546, 502-413-36)... Head coach Mark Hendrickson receives the game ball from Vice President Dr. Garry Johnson (center) and Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine (right).

LEATHERNECK TEAM CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED: Four seniors were voted on by their teammates as captains for the 2010 sea-son... Quarterback Matt Barr (Belvidere/Belvidere) and linebacker Kyle Glazier (Geneseo/Geneseo) were repeat selections from 2009... Wide receiver Lito Senatus (Miami, FL/Southwest) and defensive lineman Mike Stieren (Springfield/Sacred Heart-Griffin) also represent the offense and defense, respectively.

SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS AGAINST FCS: The Leather-necks now own a 7-game winning streak in season-opening games against Football Championship Subdivision opponents. The last time Western dropped a season-opening game against a FCS pro-gram was 1993, a 29-16 loss to Montana State.2010: 45-0 vs. Valparaiso2009: 35-28 at Sam Houston State2007: 29-26 OT win vs. #20 South Dakota State2006: 31-6 vs. Morehead State2002: 64-7 vs. Drake2001: 17-13 vs. #3 Western Kentucky1997: 41-0 vs. #6 Eastern IllinoisSince 2000 the Leathernecks have defeated Division II Wayne State (35-3 in 2003) and lost to Football Bowl Subdivision teams Missouri (50-20 in 2000), Nebraska (56-17 in 2004), Toledo (62-14 in 2005) and Arkansas (28-24 in 2008).

RETURNING ALL-MVFC: Western Illinois returns several All-Mis-souri Valley Football Conference performers in 2010... Todd Spei-ght earned First Team accolades last year as a return specialist... Despite leading the Valley in tackles last year (and Western the past two seasons) Kyle Glazier was only a Second Team selec-tion in 2009 and Honorable Mention his sophomore year... Fullback Josh Gabelmann and wide receiver Lito Senatus were selected Honorable Mention... Senior defensive lineman Victor Visoky earned Second Team honors his freshman year, and was a Honor-able Mention selection in 2008.

DIFFERENCE IN WINNING/LOSING MVFC OPENER: Looking over the previous 11 years Mark Hendrickson has been at West-ern Illinois, winning the Missouri Valley Football Conference opener has been a telling sign of the season... When Western won its con-ference-opener (five times), the team would eventually win or share two titles, tie for third twice and finish no worse than fourth... When the Leathernecks lost their opener, the squad finished no better than tied for fourth (two occasions)... Western captured its 2010 conference opener in convincing fashion defeating Indiana State 40-7 on Homecoming.

PROTECT THE BALL: Western Illinois turned in another turnover-free game in the win at North Dakota State... The Leathernecks have committed just two offensive turnovers on the year (Indiana State)... The Leathernecks had a fumble recovery on the Bison’s first drive, and turned it into seven points... Western ranks first in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and fourth nationally in turnover margin (+8/1.6 pg). Last year Western finished at minus-12 in turnovers.

NATIONALLY-RANKED OFFENSE: Western’s offense has been nothing short of impressive during the first half of the season. Head coach Mark Hendrickson, offensive coordinator Doug Ruse and the offense ranks among the national leaders (and leads the MVFC) in several categories...• 3rd in rushing offense (274.2 ypg)• 5th in total offense (463.6 ypg)• 6th in scoring offense (38.0 ppg)Bryce Flowers is third in the Valley and ranks 15th nationally aver-aging 106.8 yards on the ground while Caulton Ray is ninth in the MVFC and 34th nationally in rushing (89.8)... Matt Barr is 27th in total offense (236.4) and 25th in passing efficiency (136.13)

TOUCHDOWN WESTERN ILLINOIS: That phrase has been said often during the first five games of the 2010 season. Western has scored 27 touchdowns this season - 18 rushing and 9 passing... The 38.0 ppg (190 points) leads the conference and ranks sixth na-tionally. This year’s team already outscored last year’s squad after just four games, (154 points and 21 TDs in 11 games).

DEFENSE MATCHING THE OFFENSE: The Leatherneck defense is keeping pace with the offense’s national rankings... Western stands among the national rankings...• 5th in passing efficiency defense (93.81)• 4th in scoring defense (13.6 ppg)• 4th in turnover margin (+1.6)• 10th in pass defense (139.4 ypg)Senior linebacker Kyle Glazier enters the weekend tied for 43rd nationally in tackles (9.0 p/g) and 80th in tackles per game (1.1 p/g)... Senior defensive end Mike Stieren is tied for 44th nationally with 0.4 sacks per game.

HOME SWEET HOME: After going winless at Hanson Field last year, this year’s Leathernecks have been simply dominating at home in the first three games.• The offense is scoring 47 points per game at home while the de-fense is allowing 7.0 ppg... • The offense has scored in all 12 quarters at home; the defense has shutout the opposition in 10 of the 12 quarters...• The rushing game has tallied at least 300 yards in all three home games; the defense allowed 180 or fewer yards of total offense twice...• The offense had kept control of the ball at least 34 or more min-utes in two of the games...• The defense has recorded nine of the 10 takeaways at home.• And it has rained at some point during the day of every game. The Valparaiso and Indiana State games were played in a constant rain all game long.

BALANCED RUSHING ATTACK: Known for its rushing attack, Western Illinois kept that trend going in the season-opener against Valparaiso. Three running backs rushed for at least 80 yards - Bryce Flowers 121 (21 carries), Caulton Ray 86 (16 carries) and Lamor Hickman 80 (12 carries) in the win... The last time West-ern had three running backs each register at least 80 yards on the ground came against Quincy in September 2008.

Bryce Flowers rushed for a game-high 192 yards and two scores while Caulton Ray tallied 115 yards and two TDs... The previous time came when Herb Donaldson (273) and Dre Gibbs (126) rushed for more than 100 in the win at Missouri State in October 2008.

NEARLY DO IT AGAIN: Western nearly made it two consecutive games with two rushers clearing 100 yards... At North Dakota State, Caulton Ray finished with a game-high 106 yards on 18 carries (5.9 ypc) - includ-ing a season-high 36 yard run on his first carry of the game... Bryce Flowers tallied 95 yards on 16 carries (5.9 ypc)... Both runners extended their streak of rushing for a touchdown in every game this season.

ELITE 5,000 CLUB: In addition to his rewriting of the passing record books, senior Matt Barr joined another elite group... Following the win over Sam Houston State, he surpassed 5,000 yards of total offense... Barr (5,300) became the fifth Leatherneck ever to reach the 5,000 pla-teau joining Paul Singer (7,816), Russ Michna (6,713), Steve LaFalce (6,683) and Jeff Hecklinski (5,728).

BARR EARNS MVFC, NATIONAL AWARD: Senior quarterback Matt Barr, who played only three quarters in the win over Sam Houston State, was named Missouri Valley Football Conference ‘Offensive Player of the Week’ and ‘Na-tional FCS Offensive Player of the Week’ by the College Football Performance Awards... Barr set a Western Illinois re-cord with 125 rushing yards by a quarter-back – breaking his own mark set against South Dakota State in the 2007 season opener... Barr rushed just seven times in the win, including a career-long 69-yard touchdown run... He completed 12-of-26 passes for 221 yards and matched a personal-best with three TD passes, also done last year in the win at Sam Houston to kick off the 2009 campaign... Both of Barr’s weekly MVFC awards came fol-lowing a win over Sam Houston State (2009).

BARR IN THE TOP 0: Senior quarterback Matt Barr added his name again to the Western Illinois ‘Top 10’ passing record book early in the 2010 season. In the Valparaiso game, Barr reached 10th place in passing yards all-time. After his performance against Indiana State he stands sixth place all-time, and he continues to climb closer to fifth with 4,497 yards (needing 201 yards)... His 25 completions and 286 yards at Purdue were both the second-highest totals of his career... Barr matched a career-high throwing three touchdown passes against Sam Houston State... He also ranks among the ‘Top 10’ in: completions (346/5th), attempts (635/6th), percentage (.545/7th), yards per game (149.9/8th) and touchdowns (26/T-7th)... GAME Valparaiso.............................0Western Illinois ..................45 MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois turned in an impressive per-formance on both sides of the ball as the Fighting Leathernecks snapped a 10-game losing streak following their 45-0 win over Valparaiso. Battling rainy conditions all night, Western in the process ended a six-game losing streak at home in resounding fashion. The offense did not commit a turnover, rolling up 569 yards of offense in 87 plays while Valparaiso fumbled five times losing three. Western’s defense limited the Crusaders to 131 yards of total offense. Quarterback Matt Barr, making his first appearance since game four of last year, and the offense took over on their own 34 after the defense forced Valpo to punt on its opening series. Caulton Ray, making his Western debut, rushed six times in the 11-play drive capping it with a 3-yard touchdown run. Western got the ball back and drove down to the Valpo 19 before the drive stalled. Senior Charlie Jouett nailed a 36-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead with 2:14 left in the first. Western missed an opportunity later in the quarter on a missed 33-yard field goal, but the defense responded three plays later. Mike Stieren recovered the first of three Valpo fumbles, putting the offense at the 15. Two plays later Barr found Josh Gabel-mann on an 8-yard TD pass for a 17-0 lead heading into the locker room. Western took over early in the third quarter on its 32. Barr found Terriun Crump for five yards. On the next play, Barr executed the flea-flicker and found a wide-open Lito Senatus for a 63-yard touchdown. Freshman Bryce Flowers started the fourth quarter breaking through on a 31-yard touchdown. Brandon Kreczmer recovered another Valpo fumble, setting up the offense on the 18. Gabel-mann capped off the four-play drive scoring from four yards out. Flowers added a 16-yard TD run on the next drive for the final margin. Even though the rain lasted most of the night, according to Coach Hendrickson that did not change the game plan. “Our game plan didn’t change because of the weather. Had we played in the downpour from earlier we would have, but we stuck to it and I was very proud with the way we executed with the conditions the way they were,” said Hendrickson. “I was im-pressed for the offense to take 87 snaps and have perfect ball security. On the defensive side it was great for the defense to take the ball away from them three times. We got in 87 plays for 567 yards and in those conditions that’s very impressive.” The victory also marked the first for coach Hendrickson, begin-ning his first year as the program’s head coach after serving as acting head coach during parts of the last two years. “I have been a Leatherneck for a long time and every Leath-erneck win feels good and this one is no exception. We have a lot of young men who are very excited and we are excited for them to get this win,” said Hendrickson, in his 12th year with Western. GAME NOTES: Flowers and Ray both made their Western debut as the duo joined Western in January in time for spring practice... Drew Helt caught three passes for 38 yards. Last year

he caught just one pass for 31 yards... Jouett’s first quarter field goal marked Western’s first made FG in eight games, dating back to the Southern Illinois game last year... The 45 points were the most since Western’s last home win - a 48-45 overtime win over Illinois State in November 2008... It marked the third shutout in 16 games under coach Mark Hendrickson. The other two, 68-0 versus Quincy and 56-0 against Indiana State, came in the 2008 season... Western recorded eight tackles for a loss in all, while Valpo recorded seven pass break-ups... Todd Speight tied the career record for kickoff returns (69 also by Reggie Gray) when he returned the opening kick of the second half... Senatus moved into eighth place among the career reception leaders with 88... Valparaiso was forced to punt nine times... The Leathernecks led in time of possession 34:24 to 25:36... Western was 0-for-2 on fourth down attempts, 4-10 at the Valpo 35 and 4-9 from the 37.

GAME 2Western Illinois ..................2Purdue ................................3 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Western Illinois battled to the end, but came up short in a 31-21 loss at Purdue. The Fighting Leather-necks fell to 1-1 on the year while Purdue improved to 1-1. Western jumped on the board first, thanks to an opportunistic defense. Mike Stieren tipped Robert Marve’s pass and Tyler West recorded his first career interception to set up the Leathernecks on the Purdue 42. Matt Barr hit Lito Senatus down the middle, all the way to the Purdue one. On the next play Caulton Ray was stopped at the line but his second effort found an open gap into the endzone. Charlie Jouett’s extra point gave the Leathernecks a 7-0 lead at the 11 minute mark. Purdue responded with an eight-play drive, capped by Marve’s 25-yard pass to Justin Siller, to tie the game. Western missed on two opportunities during the second quarter in Purdue territory. Jouett narrowly missed a 37-yard field goal left of the upright. Later in the quarter facing 4th-and-1 on the 28 Barr missed on a pass to Drew Helt. That was an 11-play drive. Purdue marched down the field using a 15-play drive to take the lead. Dan Dierking punched it in from a yard out with 18 second left in the half. On the ensuing kickoff Todd Speight fumbled and Purdue took over on the Leathernecks’ 21. Following a 2-yard completion, Carson Wiggs nailed a 36-yard field goal for a 10-point halftime lead. Late in the third quarter Western looked to have stopped Purdue on a three-and-out. However, on the punt Western was flagged for roughing the kicker. The Boilermakers took advantage and marched down the field. Dierking scored from five yards out with 3:11 remain-ing making it 24-7. In the fourth quarter Western broke the scoring drought. Bryce Flowers rushed for a 14-yard touchdown with 4:31 remaining, cutting the deficit to 24-14. The play covered 55 yards in nine plays. Purdue broke off a 40-yard touchdown run when Al-Terek Mc-Burse looked to have been brought down but shook off two tackles for the TD. Western responded with an 82-yard drive on nine plays capped by Barr’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Charles Chestnut. Barr completed 25-of-38 passes for 286 yards and a touchdown. His completions and yards were both the second-highest total of his career. Terriun Crump (52 yards), and Speight (50) each caught five passes. Justin Morgan made four catches. Junior transfer Ryan Davis recorded a season-high eight tack-les while Mike Garoppolo set a career-high with eight stops. Kyle Glazier added seven tackles, including two for a loss. “We’ve got a good football team, we just need to execute bet-ter and not make costly mistakes. Overall we played very well. The offense had some great execution and great drives,” said head coach Mark Hendrickson. “I thought we out-played Purdue in the fourth quarter. Matt Barr made some great plays and our receivers came up with key catches late in the game. It was very impressive to see our team never quit on either side of the ball. There is really one drive we’d like to have back defensively, the one at the end of the first half. Our defense was very good overall.” All-American lineman Ryan Kerrigan recorded a game-high 12 stops, including four for a loss. Dierking rushed for 102 yards on 14 carries and scored twice. GAME NOTES: Dwight Harris recorded his first career tackle for loss late in the first quarter… Speight’s first quarter kickoff re-

turn was the 70th of his career, and he took sole possession of the Western all-time record. His fumble late in the first half was the first turnover committed by Western this season, a span of nearly six quarters… Morgan and Speight both set career-highs in receptions and yards. Crump matched his career-high of five catches… Atten-dance was 47,301 for Purdue’s home-opener.

GAME 3Sam Houston State ............4Western Illinois ..................56 MACOMB, Ill. - Senior quarterback Matt Barr did it with his feet and through the air, leading Western Illinois to a convincing 56-14 victory over Sam Houston State at Hanson Field. With the win, the Fighting Leathernecks recorded their 500th career victory in 107 years of the program’s existence improving to 500-413-36 all-time. For the third consecutive game, Western struck first. Staging an 89-yard drive later in the first quarter, Bryce Flowers ripped off a 41-yard run then Barr found Todd Speight for 24 yards to set up 1st-and-goal. Two plays later Flowers scored from a yard out. Charlie Jouett hit the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Punter Chris Fuchs pinned the Bearkats down on their own six midway through the second quarter. Victor Visoky forced a fumble on Ryan Wilson, and Dwight Harris recovered on the one yard line. Caulton Ray punched it in on the next play. Once again, the quick-strike Western offense needed just one play. Barr kept the ball himself, broke through the line and raced 69 yards for a touchdown. That marked the longest run of his career giving Western a 21-7 lead. Flanders moved quickly down the field again, using runs of 18 and 31 yards to score his second TD of the quarter cutting Western’s lead to seven points again. The Leathernecks covered 82 yards on eight plays in their next drive. Barr found Lito Senatus on a 9-yard touchdown pass before halftime as Western took a 28-14 lead into the locker room. Flanders rushed for 153 yards in the half, but the Leathernecks defense kept him and the Bearkats offense in check during final 30 minutes. Western took the ball to start and Barr would eventually hit Justin Morgan for a 13-yard touchdown. Following a 3-and-out, Speight took a reverse, used his downfield blocking and scored from 24 yards out. Then right before the third quarter ended Barr hit Terriun Crump down the left sidelines for another 1-play, 43-yard scoring strike, capping the 21-point quarter. The Leathernecks rounded out the scoring when Wil Lunt found Aaron Muhammad on a 16-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. “The coaching staff and myself couldn’t be more proud of the team than we are at this moment. We have prepared very well through practice and three game weeks, and as a result we’ve played three good ball games. We’ve left each game with more momentum than we had the week before. That’s not easy to do and I give the credit to the players,” said head coach Mark Hendrickson. “At halftime we felt like we did after the first two games. We were playing well, but the goal was to take it up one more notch. The players challenged themselves to do that and I’m proud to say the results showed in the second half.” Barr, who played only three quarters, set a Western Illinois re-cord with 125 rushing yards by a quarterback - breaking his own mark set against South Dakota State in the 2007 season open-er. Barr rushed seven times, including his career-long 69-yard touchdown run. He completed 12-of-26 passes for 221 yards and matched a personal-best with three TD passes, also done last year in the win at Sam Houston to kick off the 2009 campaign. No Leatherneck had more than three catches, as Barr and Lunt found nine different receivers in the win. In fact, Muhammad and Morgan both caught their first TD pass as a Leatherneck. Kyle Glazier paced the defense making 10 tackles, including a sack. Sam Power added a career-high nine stops and Brandon

Kreczmer made seven tackles. Western forced two turnovers, the fumble deep in SHSU territory then in the second half Ryan Wal-dron recorded his first career interception returning it 50 yards. GAME NOTES: Fuchs averaged 41.6 yards on seven punts, including a season-high 49-yarder. He put five of his seven punts inside the 20-yard line... Western made 10 tackles for a loss and re-corded three sacks... Chris Boone broke up two passes... Drew Helt caught two passes for 59 yards. He now has seven receptions this season, matching his three-year career total... The Leathernecks scored 35 unanswered points to finish out the game... Western fin-ishes the regular season 2-1 against non-conference teams.

GAME 4Indiana State ........................7Western Illinois ..................40 MACOMB, Ill. – Bryce Flowers and Caulton Ray each gained 100 yards on the ground as Western Illinois rushed for a season-high 384 yards in a 40-7 Missouri Valley Football Conference win over Indiana State. The Leathernecks captured a rainy Homecoming victory in the conference opener for both teams. The rain did not let up all game, and Western decided to grind out the win rushing 71 times (six off the program record). Flowers rushed for 192 yards on 26 carries and Ray added 115 yards on 29 attempts, both season-high yards and attempts for both backs. Each recorded two rushing TDs. Ray opened the scoring with a 1-yard TD run midway through the first quarter. Flowers broke through on a 32-yard run early in the second. This time Western converted the extra point for a 13-0 lead. The Sycamores (1-2, 0-1) dropped back to punt from their own 22. Ryan Waldron broke through and got a hand on the punt, and thanks to a penalty Western took over on the 14. Ray needed one play to score his second TD of the game and a 20-0 lead heading into the locker room. Western held Indiana State to a 3-and-out to start the second half, and the Leathernecks used a season-long scoring drive to take control of the game. Josh Gabelmann’s 1-yard plunge capped a 17-play drive (all rushes) that covered more than seven minutes and staked Western to a 27-0 lead. ISU used Brock Lough on five consecutive rushes, the last from a yard out, to get on the scoreboard. Flowers added a 14-yard TD run then later in the fourth quarter Lamor Hickman added a 5-yard score for the final margin. As good as the offense was rushing the ball, Western’s defense continues to dominate at home. Opponents have scored in only two of the 12 quarters played at Hanson Field this year (7.0 ppg allowed at home), and the defense forced four turnovers. “I’m very proud of the Leatherneck football players in the locker room right now. I’m proud of the way they performed to win the first con-ference ball game with the conditions we had… Our players executed very well in all three areas of the game today,” said head coach Mark Hendrickson. “It’s a very satisfying win because these young men have done outstanding things so far and our staff would say we’re four-for-four in playing good games. We have yet to play a poor quarter. We’re very proud of the way the players have performed, especially after this contest because this was a conference game. Our players wanted to start 1-0 in conference after the three non-conference games.” The last time Western had two runners gain 100-yards each was October 2008, a span of 22 games. Quarterback Matt Barr actually gained more yards rushing (48 yards on seven carries) than he did passing (19 on 4-of-11 passing). Senior linebacker Kyle Glazier shared game-high honors with 11 tackles, and he recovered a fumble. Brandon Kreczmer added eight tackles, recovered a fumble and came up with his first career intercep-tion. Keith Enderlein finished with six tackles. Chris Fuchs paced the special teams averaging 37 yards on six punts. He kicked a season-long 52-yarder and placed three inside the 10-yard line. Darrius Gates led the Sycamores with 51 rushing yards on 12 carries. ISU had 121 yards on the ground and 52 through the air by Ronnie Fouch on 6-of-17 passing. Aaron Archie led the Sycamore defense with 11 tackles. Ben Obaseki and Nate Brown added 10 tackles each. GAME NOTES: Ray and Flowers have rushed for a touchdown in every game this year… The offense committed their first turnover of the season when Barr threw an interception. Western also fumbled but Indiana State could not convert points on either turnover… WIU held the

edge in time of possession, 34:42 to 25:18… Due to the wet weather, Charlie Jouett missed his first extra point attempt. That was Western’s first missed extra point since the Missouri State game in 2008 – the last time the Leathernecks had two 100-yard rushers… It has rained in all three home games this season… Barr’s 19 passing yards matched his career-low (19 vs. Northern Iowa in 2007)… Gabelmann led the receivers with two receptions… Western converted 10-of-18 on third down while holding ISU to 3-of-14… The fourth down conversion by the Sycamores was the first allowed by Western this year… Twenty of the 23 first downs gained by Western came on the ground.

GAME 5Western Illinois ..................28#3 North Dakota State .....6 FARGO, N.D. – In what shaped up as a battle of nationally-ranked defenses, Western Illinois scored early and would go on to a 28-16 win at 13th-ranked North Dakota State in the Fargodome. The Fighting Leathernecks improved to 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and 4-1 overall. NDSU came into the game ranked fourth nationally in scoring defense while Western was sixth, but by halftime Western had already scored more points than the Bison had allowed in a game all year. North Dakota State (3-2, 0-2) took the opening kickoff and raced 41 yards to midfield. Brock Jensen hit Warren Holloway for 32 yards to get inside the redzone, however, on the next play Mike Sigers fumbled and Dwight Harris recovered. Caulton Ray broke off his longest run of the year, 36 yards, to get inside Bison territory. On 3rd-and-12, Matt Barr hit Lito Senatus for a first down. Bryce Flowers rushed inside the five, then Barr hit Senatus for a 6-yard touchdown. Charlie Jouett hit the extra point. The Bison took the kickoff and drove inside the 5-yard line. On 3rd-and-goal, Jansen looked for Holloway again, but Kieron James broke up the pass in the corner of the endzone. NDSU settled for a 21-yard field goal by Ryan Jastram. Western took advantage of two penalties, including one in the en-dzone on pass interference to set up 1st-and-goal. Ray plunged over the top for a 1-yard score and 14-3 lead early in the second quarter. With his TD run, Ray extended his streak of rushing for a TD in every game this season. The Leathernecks held NDSU to a 3-and-out, then took over on their own 21. A 10-play scoring drive was capped when Flowers broke a couple of tackles, ran out of a shoe, and scored from 18 yards out. The freshman running back joined Ray in scoring a rushing TD in ev-ery game this year, and Jouett’s extra point gave Western a 21-3 lead midway through the second quarter. Right before half, Western got into Bison territory but had to punt. NDSU used a 30-yard run by Jensen to get to the WIU 30, and the redshirt-freshman quarterback was tackled with four seconds left. After spiking the ball to stop the clock, Jastram nailed a career-long 47-yarder cutting the Leathernecks’ lead to 21-6 heading into the locker room. Western went 3-and-out on its first drive of the second half. On NDSU’s first play, D.J. McNorton broke out of a pile for a 40-yard run. Mike Stieren and Brandon Kreczmer sacked Jensen on a 15-yard loss during the next snap, but on the following play Jensen found Holloway on a 47-yard completion to the six. McNorton got it down to the one, but the offense was stopped on the next two plays. On 4th-and-inches Jensen took it himself for the touchdown. Barr and the offense responded with a momentum-changing score. The senior quarterback connected with Terriun Crump on a 39-yard reception into Bison territory. Flowers took a run down to the two, then three plays later Barr hit a wide-open Senatus on a 1-yard TD reception. Jouett made it 28-13 as the 10-play drive took nearly five minutes. The Bison used another big gain to get into Western’s side, this time a 42-yard run by Jensen. But the defense held NDSU and Jastram hit a 40-yard field goal, his third of the game setting a personal-high. On 4th-and-5 and five and a half minutes left in the game NDSU went for it and got another big play from the wide receiver Holloway. Jensen found him down the right sidelines for a 42-yard gain. But the defense stepped up. Two incomplete passes set up third down. Alex Martinez stopped Jensen on third down then Stieren sacked Jensen to give the offense the ball on downs. North Dakota State got the ball back and was inside the redzone, but the Leatherneck defense held on four straight plays. Western was able to run out the clock and seal the win.

Ray finished with 106 yards on 18 carries and scored a TD. Barr completed 17-of-24 passes for 175 yards and the two TDs. Crump set a personal-high with 75 receiving yards on five receptions while Senatus tied a career-high with his two touchdown catches. The offense converted 7-of-13 on third down while Western’s defense held the Bison to just 3-of-13. Kreczmer paced the defense with 10 tackles, including two for a loss. Kyle Glazier added seven stops and Stieren had 1.5 sacks. GAME NOTES: Western won the toss and elected to deferred to the second half… The Leathernecks have scored first in all five games this season… Barr’s first completion of the game went for 22 yards to Senatus. He had only 19 passing yards (4-of-11) during the rainy win the previous week against Indiana State… The Bison used two timeouts during their FG drive in the first quarter… NDSU had allowed a season-high 16 points on two occasions heading into the game. Western had 21 points at halftime… The road team has won all four games in the series… This was head coach Mark Hendrickson’s second win against a ranked FCS opponent (2-4 all-time)… Western has scored 20 or more points in 13 of the 20 career games Hendrickson has coached.
