OVERVIEWWhatisanAthleticTrainer?AccordingtotheNationalAthleticTrainers’Association(NATA),athletictrainers(ATs)arehighlyqualified,multi-skilledhealthcareprofessionalswhocollaboratewithphysicianstoprovidepreventativeservices,emergencycare,clinicaldiagnosis,therapeuticinterventionandrehabilitationofinjuriesandmedicalconditions.Athletictrainersworkunderthedirectionofaphysicianasprescribedbystatelicensurestatutes.
WhatisAthleticTraining?AthletictrainingisrecognizedasanalliedhealthcareprofessionbytheAmericanMedicalAssociation(AMA),HealthResourcesServicesAdministration(HRSA),andtheDepartmentofHealthandHumanServices(HHS).Therearefivedomainsinthefieldofathletictraining:Injury/IllnessPrevention&WellnessPromotion;Examination,Assessment&Diagnosis;Immediate&EmergencyCare;TherapeuticInterventionandHealthcareAdministration&ProfessionalResponsibility.ATshelppreventinjuriesbyincorporatingpre-participationscreenings,fieldinspectionsandpreventativetaping/bracingtechniquesintotheirclinicalpractice.Wheninjuriesorillnessesoccur,ATshavearesponsibilitytoevaluatethesituationandappropriatelytreatand/orrefertheindividual.ATsincorporatetherapeuticinterventionsintotheirclinicalpracticetohelpreturnpatientstoactivitiesofdailylifeandsportparticipationasapplicable.Inadditiontotheseskills,athletictrainersshouldalsohavetheknowledgeandabilityofadministrativeresponsibilitiestomaintainrecordsanddailyoperationsoftheirfacilities.Sinceathletictrainingisanever-evolvingfield,ATsneedtostayuptodateoncurrentissuesandbiannuallyreportcontinuingeducation.
NorthParkUniversity’sAthleticTrainingProgramTheNorthParkUniversityAthleticTrainingProgram(ATP)isaccreditedbytheCAATE(CommissiononAccreditationofAthleticTrainingEducation).TheATPisdesignedtopreparestudentsforclinicalpracticeandsuccessfulchallengeoftheBoardofCertification(BOC)exam.Theprogramiscohortbasedandspansthreeacademicyears.Moredetailsaboutthecurriculumwillbeprovidedlaterinthishandbook.WhileenrolledintheATP,studentswillhavetheopportunitytoprovidehealthcaretopatientsunderthesupervisionoftheirpreceptorsinavarietyofclinicalsettingsandshouldtreatthisresponsibilitywiththerespectitdeserves.
PurposeoftheStudentHandbookTheATStudentHandbookisdesignedtoinformstudentsofthegeneralguidelinesunderwhichtheATPatNorthParkUniversitywilloperateandshouldbeconsultedasaguide.However,itisimpossibletodiscusseverypossiblesituationthatmaybeencounteredinthefieldofathletictraining.
Eachstudentisresponsibleforlearningandabidingbyallofthepoliciesandproceduresinthishandbook.Inaddition,studentsareresponsibleforknowingandabidingbytheNPUATServicesPolicy&ProcedureManual.Duringplacementatanoff-campussite,studentsshouldknowandabidebythatfacility’spolicyandproceduremanual.Ifthereisnomanualattheoff-campussite,thestudentshouldfollowtheNorthParkStudentHandbookandATServicesPolicyandProcedureManualasapplicable.StudentswhodonotmeetthestandardsoftheATPatNorthParkUniversitywillnotmatriculate.

TheAthleticTrainingProgrampreparesstudentstosuccessfullychallengetheBoardofCertificationexamination.Thefour-yearcurriculumblendsdynamicdidacticandclinicalexperienceswithanemphasisonlearningovertime.Theprogram’slearningenvironmenthasastrongincorporationofeducationaltechnologiesandfocusesonreal-lifeapplicationthroughhands-onexperiences.UponleavingNorthPark,graduateswillcontinuetoseekgreaterunderstandingofathletictrainingasadisciplineandwillbegiventhetoolstobecomelifelonglearnersandscholarscapableofcontributingtotheevolutionofthefieldandtosocietalhealth.

PROGRAMOBJECTIVES
1. Thegraduatewillhavetheabilitytoperformon-field/clinicalassessmentsandevaluatetheresultstodeterminediagnosesconsistentwithanentry-levelathletictrainer.
2. Thegraduatewillhavetheabilitytodevelop,monitor,andmodifyrehabilitationprogramsconsistentwithanentry-levelathletictrainer.
3. Thegraduatewillhavetheabilitytodevelopandoperateanathletictrainingprogramcompletewithbudgeting,policies&procedures,andhumanresourcemanagementconsistentwithanentry-levelathletictrainer.
4. Thegraduatewillhavetheabilitytocommunicateeffectivelytocoaches,parents,patients,student-athletes,andothermedicalpersonnelinwaysconsistentwithanentry-levelathletictrainer.
5. ThegraduatewillpromoteprofessionalconductoftheathletictrainingprofessionincompliancewiththecodeofethicssetforthbytheNATA,theBOCStandardsofProfessionalPractice,andapplicablestatepracticeacts.
6. Thegraduatewillappreciatetheimportanceofcontinuedlearningandhavetheabilitytoidentifyresourcesthatwillfacilitateadditionalscholarship.

MEMBERSOFTHEATHLETICTRAININGPROGRAM
MedicalDirector:TheMedicalDirectorwillprovidecompetentdirectionand/orguidancetoensurethatthemedicalcomponentsofthecurriculummeetcurrentandacceptablestandards.TheMedicalDirectorisalsowillingtobeinvolvedinthedevelopmentofthecurriculumandintheeducationofstudentsenrolledintheATP.She/hemayormaynotbepresentintheathletictrainingfacilityonaweeklybasis,butwillbeinvolvedintheplannedformalinstructionoftheprogram,throughlecture,discussionorotherdidacticmeans.AnotherprimaryresponsibilityoftheMedicalDirectoristoserveasthechiefsupervisingphysicianforNorthParkUniversity’sAthleticTrainingServicesasitsstaffprovideshealthcareservicestothestudent-athletesthatparticipatewithintheDepartmentofAthletics.TheMedicalDirectorhasthefinalauthorityindecidingthemanagementofcasesforNorthParkstudent-athletes.TheMedicalDirectorwillalsobeinvolvedwithdevelopingandapprovingthepolicyandproceduresthatserveastheframeworkofNPU’sAthleticTrainingServices.
TeamPhysicians:TheTeamPhysiciansareclinicalpractitionersprovidingservicestothestudent-athletes.TheyhaveasincereinterestintheprofessionalpreparationofthestudentenrolledintheATPandarewillingtoshareknowledgethroughon-goinginformaldiscussions,clinics,andothereducationalservices.TeamPhysicianswilllectureasapart-timevolunteerclassroominstructorthroughouttheacademicyeartostudentsenrolledintheprogram.TheTeamPhysician(s)willalsobepresentintheathletictrainingfacilitiesonaweeklybasis.
ProgramDirector:TheProgramDirectoroftheATPisresponsiblefortheeducationaldevelopmentofthestudentsandcurriculum.ItistheresponsibilityoftheProgramDirectortoensurethatallCAATEaccreditationrequirementsaremet.
TheprimaryresponsibilityoftheProgramDirectorliesinadministrativedutiesandclassroominstruction.AsanAthleticTrainer,theProgramDirectormayalsohavesecondaryresponsibilitiesinprovidingathletictrainingservicesandservingasapreceptor.
ClinicalEducationCoordinator:TheClinicalEducationCoordinatorisresponsibleforoverseeingtheclinicaleducationofATstudentsincludingtheeducation&managementofpreceptors,recruitmentofnewclinicalsites,andplacement&scheduling.AsapartofAthleticTrainingServicesatNPU,theClinicalEducationCoordinatormayalsohaveoutlinedresponsibilitiesintheathletictrainingfacilitiesandserveasapreceptorinadditiontohis/herroleinclassroominstruction.

HeadAthleticTrainer:TheHeadAthleticTrainerisresponsibleforthesupervisionofthemembersofAthleticTrainingServicesinmattersrelatingtothehealthcareofNorthParkstudent-athletes.ItistheresponsibilityoftheHeadAthleticTrainertoestablishpoliciesandproceduresregardingathletictrainingfacilityhours,eventcoverage,andhealthcare.TheHeadAthleticTraineralsoservesasapreceptor.
OtherNPUAthleticTrainers:AdditionalAthleticTrainersareresponsibleforprovidinghealthcareservicestoNorthParkstudent-athletes,assistingwiththedailyoperationsoftheathletictrainingfacilityinconjunctionwiththeHeadAthleticTrainer,andservingasapreceptorfortheATP.
Preceptors:Preceptorsarelicensedhealthcareproviderswhoagreetobecomepartofourstudents’clinicaleducation.Preceptorsincludethoseindividualswhosupervisestudentclinicaleducationbothonandoffcampus.Assuchpreceptorsareexpectedto:
• Orientatestudentstofacilitypolicy&proceduresandEAPs• Supervisestudentsduringclinicaleducationexperiences.• Provideinstruction&assessmentofcurrentknowledge,skillsandclinicalabilities.• Provideinstruction&opportunitiesforstudentstodevelopclinicalintegrationproficiencies,
communicationandclinicaldecision-makingduringactualpatientcare.• Provideassessmentofathletictrainingstudents’clinicalintegrationproficiencies,communicationskills
andclinicaldecision-makingduringactualpatientcare• Facilitatetheclinicalintegrationofskills,knowledgeandevidenceregardingthepracticeofathletic
training.• Demonstrateunderstandingofandcompliancewiththeprogram’spoliciesandprocedures.
AthleticTrainingStudents:Studentsmustcompleteallprerequisitecourses,submitrequiredapplicationmaterials,andparticipateinaninterviewprocesstogainadmissionintotheATP.Athletictrainingstudentsareexpectedtotakeanactiveroleinthemaintenanceanddailyoperationoftheathletictrainingfacility.Astudent’smotivationandinitiativeincreatinglearningopportunitieswiththeirpreceptorwillenhancetheirclinicaleducationexperienc

CURRICULUM
DidacticversusClinicalCoursesAdidacticcourseisaclasswithformalclassroominstruction.Aclinicalcourseismuchdifferentinthatitinvolvesastudents’clinicaleducationinadditiontoaweeklyclassmeeting.InNorthPark’scurriculumtherearesixPractica(clinical)courses.ThesecoursesareinstructedinaclinicalsettinginassociationwiththeATsorotherhealthcareprovidersonstaffatthatdesignatedsite.Wehaveavarietyofsitesincludingsecondaryschools,collegesanduniversities,healthsystems,physicaltherapyclinics,andprofessionalathleticvenuesthroughouttheChicagolandarea.Eachstudentwillexperience6differentclinicaleducationopportunitieswithatleast2occurringoff-campus.Clinicaleducationwillincludeexposuretoindividualandteamsports,equipmentintensivesports,patientsofdifferentsexes,non-sportpopulationsandnon-orthopedicconditions.Astudent’ssex,ethnicity,religiousaffiliationorsexualorientationwillhavenobearingontheirclinicaleducationassignment. Timesoftheserotationscanvarybutfrequentlyincludeafternoons,nights,weekends,andoccasionallyvacations.Individualclinicaleducationplacementsmaybeginpriortoorcontinuepastthescheduledacademicsemester.PleaserefertotheClinicalEducationCoordinatororyourpreceptorforfurtherdetails.
ThecurriculumatNorthParkUniversityhasbeendevelopedtoallowstudentsenrolledintheAthleticTrainingProgramtheopportunitytoparticipateinintercollegiateathleticsforoneseasoneachyear.ItispossibleforastudentwhowishestoparticipateinONEwinterorspringsporttograduateinfouryears.Fallsportparticipationmayrequireanadditionalyeartograduate.SpecificquestionsregardingparticipationinintercollegiateathleticsshouldbedirectedtoyourcoachandtheProgramDirector.Whenyouarelookingatotherinstitutions,remembertoasksimilarquestionsregardingyourabilitytoparticipateinintercollegiateathletics,sincemanyathletictrainingprogramsdonotallowyoutoparticipateinathleticsatall.
CurriculumDescriptionFRESHMANYEAR:Thisyearisanopportunitytogetadjustedtocollegelifeandobserveintheathletictrainingfacilitiesinordertogainanunderstandingoftheathletictrainingprofession.Duringthistimeyouwillbecompletingtheapplication,whichincludescertainpre-requisitecourses(highlightedinred),observationhours&proficiencies,interviews,andanentranceexam.
SOPHOMOREYEAR:Theformalprogrambeginsduringthesophomoreyear.Duringthisyear,thestudentwilltakethreedidacticcourses(highlightedingreen)andtwoclinicalclasses(highlightedinyellow).ThePreventionandCarecourseinstructsthestudentinacutecareofinjuryaswellastapingandsplintingtechniques.TheOrthopedicAssessmentcoursesinstructthestudentinhowtoevaluateanddiagnosemusculoskeletalinjuries;OrthopedicAssessmentIfocusesonthelowerbodyandOrthopedicAssessmentIIcoursefocusesontheupperbodyandgeneralmedicalconditions.Theoverallgoalforthesophomoreyearistogivethestudentinstructionsothathe/shecandetermine“whatiswrong”withthepatientanddocumentthis.The(two)Practicacoursesgivethestudentclinicalinstructionindailyoperationsoftheathletictrainingfacilityandreinforcelowerbodyevaluations—withemphasisplacedonevaluatingNorthParkstudent-athletes.

JUNIORYEAR:Twodidacticcourses(highlightedingreen)andtwoclinicalclasses(highlightedinyellow)aretakenduringthejunioryear.TheTherapeuticInterventioncoursesfocusonincorporatingrehabilitationtechniquessuchasmanualtherapies,othermodalitiesandexerciseintoclinicalpractice.Thegoalduringthejunioryearistodeterminehowto“fix”theproblem.The(two)Practicacoursesgivethestudentclinicalinstructioninupperbodyevaluationanddevelopingcomprehensiverehabilitationplans—eitheronaNorthParkstudent-athletesorpatientsatanaffiliatedsportsmedicineclinic.

CURRICULARMODEL
ThecurriculumoftheATPisdesignedtoallowstudentexposuretomajorcontentareasthreetimesduringhisorhereducation.Thesequenceusesthefollowingtrack:1)theinitialtheoryandbasicskillsareintroducedinadidacticcourse,2)contentisthenreinforcedthefollowingsemesterinaclinicalcourse,3)thefollowingyear,thestudenthelpsguidestudentsinthecohortbehindthemintheATPsequence.Thestudent’smasteryofthematerialcanbeassessedastheymentorotherstudents.
Thechoicewasmadetofirstintroducematerialinadidacticcoursebecausetheenvironmentcanbemoreeasilycontrolled.Questionscanbeaskedregardingtheory,whilebasicskillsarepracticedduringlabs.Role-playingisincludedtoreproducehighanxietysituationsfrequentlyencounteredinthefield.Unfortunately,thesesituationsarenever100%authentic.Therefore,thetrueelementofrealismisaddedthefollowingsemesterwhentheskillsareassessedagain,preferablyonrealathletes/patientsinaclinicalsetting(PracticaII-VI).ThementoringsystemusedineachPracticumcourseallowsthestudenttobeassessedathirdtimeonthematerialayearlater.Thebeliefisthatthestudentmusthavemasteredmaterialinordertoeffectivelyserveasamentor.
Thecurriculumalsohasapurposefulphilosophy.Athemeisevidentwithinthedidacticcoursesduringeachoftheprogram’sthreeyears:yearone–evaluation;yeartwo–rehabilitation;andyearthree–programdesignandoperation.Itfollowsalogicalprogressionwhereastudentfirstneedstounderstandwhatiswrongwiththeathlete/patient(yearone)beforetheycanfigureouthowtorehabilitatethem(yeartwo).ThethemeofthethirdyearcanbefoundintheAthleticTrainingAdministrationcoursewhereeachstudenthastodesignanathletictrainingfacilityandinthecapstonecourse,SeniorSeminar,whichfocusesonprofessionalresponsibilityanddevelopment.

Allathletictrainingstudentsmustfilloutandturninaphysicalexam,signedtechnicalstandardsdocument,CPRcertification,andimmunizationrecordaspartoftheapplicationprocess.Onceaccepted,studentswillsubmitthesedocumentstotheirsecureCastleBranchprofilepriortothebeginningofclinicaleducationexperiences.
PhysicalExaminationAllstudentsenteringtheATParerequiredtohaveacurrenthealthphysicalexaminationTheformmustbecompletedandsignedbyahealthcareprovider(MD,DO,NP,orPA).
ImmunizationRecordsImmunizationRecordswillbeuploadedtothestudent’sCastleBranchcompliancetrackerandshouldinclude:

REQUIREMENTSFORCLINICALEDUCATIONPLACEMENT
BackgroundChecksAllstudentswillcompleteabackgroundcheckthroughCastleBranchbeforebeginningtheiroff-campusclinicaleducationexperiences(priortojunioryearintheprogram).Studentswillindividuallygotothecompanywebsiteandpurchasetheirownbackgroundcheck.(Costisapproximately$45.)Theresultswillbepostedtoasecure,confidentialwebsitethatwillbemonitoredbytheClinicalEducationCoordinator.Someclinicaleducationsitesmayrequirestudentstoobtainabackgroundcheckthroughtheirorganization;thisadditionalbackgroundcheckisatnocosttothestudent.
Pre-AdverseActionDisclosureTheATPreservestherighttorevokeacceptanceintotheprogrambasedonresultsofbackgroundchecks,drugtests,and/orfailuretocomplywithstateddeadlines.IfthedecisiontorevokeyouracceptanceismadebasedoninformationprovidedintheconsumerreportbyCastleBranch,youwillreceiveapre-adverseactionlettergivingyouthree(3)daystodisputethedecisionand/orrespondtoinformationinthereport.

EXPECTATIONSFORCLINICALEDUCATION
Students’behaviorwhileengagedinclinicaleducation(bothoncampusandoff)isadirectrepresentationoftheAthleticTrainingProgram.Weexpecttheupmostprofessionalismfromourstudentsinordertosustainthereputationthatfacultyandalumnihaveworkedtobuildovertheyears.Therefore,studentswillbeheldtothefollowingstandards:
AttendancePolicyStudentsareexpectedtoarriveontimeandstayuntildismissed.Consistenttardinessand/orleavingaclinicalsiteearlyisviewedthesameasanunexcusedabsence.Anabsenceforsickness,personal,orfamilyemergenciesiscountedasanexcusedabsenceifapprovedbyyourpreceptorand/ortheclinicaleducationcoordinator.RememberthatclinicaleducationisapartofyourPracticacoursework.
ClinicalPlacementsClinicaleducationmayincludemornings,afternoons,evenings,weekends,andvacations.Arrangementsshouldbemadeinadvancetoaccommodateclassconflicts.
Aminimumof150hoursisrequiredfortheclinicaleducationexperiencetobeconsideredacomplete.Ifthestudentdoesnotcompletetheminimumamountofhoursbytheendoftheplacement,he/shewillbepenalizedpertheevaluationguidelinesincludedbelow.Students’clinicaleducationexperiencewillnotexceed500hoursperpracticumcourse.

Studentsarerequiredtocompleteanentireathleticseason(includingpre-season)attheclinicalsite/sporttowhichtheyareassigned.Iftheclinicalsite/sportmakesittopost-seasonplay,itisthestudent’schoicetocontinuewiththeteam.Post-seasonplayisauniqueexperienceandstudentsarehighlyencouragedtotakeadvantageofthisopportunityasitarises.

Forexample:Youcompleted140/150(93%)hours.Ifyoureceivedan87%onyourmid-pointanda94%onyourendpointevaluations,yourproratedscoreswouldbe87x.93=81onyourmidpointand94x.93=87onyourendpoint.

ProfessionalismProfessionalbehaviorisexpectedatalltimes.Professionalisminvolvesaproactiveroleinthedailyactivitiesasassignedbythepreceptor,appropriateinteractionswithpatients,andappropriatedress.
RequestforAdditionalHoursOnoccasion,anAthleticTrainingStudentmaydesiretogetadditionalexperienceforaneventoutsidetheircurrentplacement’sresponsibilities.Likewise,anAthleticTrainingStudentthatisnotcurrentlyinvolvedinaplacementmaywanttoassistapreceptorwithaneventthatintereststhem.Inthesesituations,theAthleticTrainingStudentshouldsubmittheRequestforAdditionalHoursFormonA-Track.
TransportationThestudentmustassumethecostoftransportationtoandfromclinicaleducationplacements.Notallsitesarereadilyaccessiblebypublictransportation.

CLINICALEDUCATIONGUIDELINES
Thefollowingguidelinesdelineatetheroleofanathletictrainingstudentduringclinicaleducationexperiences.Duringtheseexperiences,thestudentmustbedirectlysupervisedbyapreceptor.Thepreceptormustbephysicallypresentandhavetheabilitytointerveneonbehalfoftheathletictrainingstudentandthepatient.Studentsmustdemonstratecompetenceinperformingaskillpriortoperformingitonpatients.Preceptorsarelicensedhealthcareproviders.
Athletictrainingstudentsareallowedtoperformtasksasdeemedappropriatebytheirpreceptor.Thesecaninclude(butarenotlimitedto):
• Conductinginjuryevaluations• Usingelectrical,soundorlightmodalities• Writingprogressnotes• Initiatingormodifyingarehabilitationplan
Ifastudentdoesnothavetheapprovaloftheirpreceptor(verbalorwritten)toperformatask,itshouldnotbeperformed.IfapreceptorisNOTphysicallypresentandabletointerveneonbehalfoftheathletictrainingstudentandthepatient,thestudentshouldNOTrenderservicestopatients.Note:Therearetimeswhenastudentmaybeexposedtoaconceptwhileobservingpatientcarethattheyhavenotbeenformallytaught.Inthiscase,theirpreceptormayinstructtheskillandmustdeterminetheircompetencebeforeallowingthemtoperformthisskillonapatient.

EMPLOYMENTPOLICY
TobesuccessfulintheATPatNorthParkUniversity,astudentmusthaveexceptionaltimemanagementskills.Thisisduetothetime-consumingcurriculumofbothformaldidacticcourseswithasettimescheduleandthemorevariableschedulingofclinicaleducationplacements.Theseclinical(PracticaI-VI)coursesaretiedintoathleticpractices/gamesresultinginadailyschedulethatlooksmuchmorelikeastudent-athleteratherthanatypicalundergraduatestudent.Onaverage,thisadditionaltimecommitmentwillbeapproximately20-25hours/week.Thedifficultyinschedulingworkisthatthepracticetimescanfrequentlychangelastminuteandifpropernoticeisgiven24hoursinadvancethentheAthleticTrainingStudentwillbeexpectedtoreporttotheirpreceptorastheschedulemandates.
Asaresult,itisextremelydifficultforastudenttobeemployedwhiletheyareenrolledinaPracticumcourse*.Asnotedonthesyllabi,eachPracticumisacreditedcoursewithapenaltyforunexcusedabsences.“Employment”isnotanacceptableexcuseformissingotherNPUacademiccoursesandasaresult,willnotbeconsideredacceptablehereeither.
TheATPdoesacknowledgethatmanyoftoday’sundergraduatestudentsmustgeneratesometypeofincomeinordertohelpdefraytuition/livingcosts.Asaresult,thereisnosetpolicyonwhetherornotastudentcanseekemploymentifitisdoneduringtheirfreetime.ThefacultyandstaffoftheATPdonotbelieveitisintheirbestinteresttopreventawell-motivatedstudentwithexceptionaltimemanagementskillsfromseekingadegreeinathletictrainingwhilebeingemployediftheycanproperlybalancetheirschedule.
*ThePracticumcourseschedulingistypicallydoneonaFall,Winter,andSpringsystem.Eachstudentisassignedtoapreceptorduringtwoofthosethreeseasons.Inmostcases,thismeansthatastudentwillhaveaseasonwithnoPracticumrequirementstiedtoapreceptor’sschedule.Ifastudenthasadesire/needtowork,theywillbeadvisedthatthisisthemostappropriatetimetodoso.

ATHLETICPARTICIPATIONPOLICY
ThedesireoftheNorthParkUniversityAthleticTrainingProgramistopreparestudentsforsuccessfulclinicalpracticeandpassageoftheBoardofCertification(BOC)examination.Thecurriculumblendsaheavydidacticcourseloadwithclinicaleducationplacementsatvaryinglocations.Theseclinicaleducationplacementsareanintegralpartofthestudents’education.Unfortunately,clinicaleducationplacementstypicallyoccursimultaneouslytoathleticpractices.
Toremedythissituation,theATPisdesignedinafashionthatallowsanAthleticTrainingStudenttoparticipateinoneathleticseasonforfouryearsandstillgraduateinfouryears*.ThecurriculumisNOTdesigned,norcanitsupport,individualslookingtoparticipateinmorethanoneintercollegiatesport.ThisinformationisfullydisclosedtoallprospectivestudentsduringvisitswiththeProgramDirector.Additionally,allNorthParkUniversitycoacheshavebeeninformedofthisATPpolicy.
ItisstronglysuggestedthatanyAthleticTrainingStudentwithadesiretoparticipateinintercollegiateathleticspersonallymeetwiththeProgramDirectortodiscussvaryingoptions.Allstudentsadvancingthroughtheapplicationprocesstotheinterviewportionareremindedofthepolicyandaskediftheyhaveanyinterestinparticipatinginintercollegiateathletics.Failuretomakethisinformationknownpriortoentranceintotheprogramcanpotentiallycreateconflictwithaspecificclinicaleducationplacementdeterminedpriortothestartoftheindividual’ssophomoreyear.Studentsareexpectedtosubmitastudent-athletecontractattheconclusionofeachacademicyearforthefollowingseason.(SeeAppendixH.)
*Althoughunlikely,theremaybecircumstancesthatwouldcreateasituationwhereastudentwouldhavetoremainforanadditionalsemesterorenrollinanadditionalinternship.Thiswouldoccurifaparticularincomingclasshappenstohaveanumberofindividualswithadesiretoparticipateduringafallathleticseason.ThisisduetotheATP’slimited“equipmentintensive”rotationsduringthewinterandspringathleticseasons.

GRIEVANCEPOLICYFORCLINICALEDUCATIONTheNorthParkUniversityAthleticTrainingProgramexpectsthatmostgrievancesatNorthParkoraffiliatedsitescanbehandledinformallythroughoutdailycommunicationbetweenfaculty/staffandstudents.However,theATPrecognizesthattherearecertaincircumstancesinwhichtheseissuesarenotinformallyresolvedandfurtherformalattentionmustbeconsidered.Ifsuchcircumstancesarise,thefollowingprocedurehasbeenestablishedtoassistthepartiesinappropriatelyhandlingaresolutiontotheirproblem.
ThegrievancepolicyisusedtoaddressthecomplaintsthatastudenthasabouttheATP.ThestudenthandbookasoutlinedandissuedtoeachstudententeringtheNorthParkUniversityATPencompasstheguidelineswithwhichtheprogramoperates.Challengestothepoliciesandproceduresthemselvesarenotpropersubjectsforgrievances.
Ifastudentfeelsthathe/shehasagrievanceuponanotherstudent,facultymember,preceptororprogram,theyhave5daystofileagrievanceinthefollowingmanner:
Step1–Notifytheirpreceptorofthegrievance.Thepreceptorwillhearandattempttoresolvethegrievanceinatimelyfashion.
Step2–Ifthegrievancepertainsonlytotheeducationalprogram,theProgramDirectormustbenotified.Ifthegrievancepertainsonlytooff-siteclinicalplacement,theClinicalEducationCoordinatormustbenotified.IftheissuepertainstoanathleticsissueatNorthPark,theHeadAthleticTrainermustbenotified.Intheeventthatthisgrievanceisdealingequallywithmultipleareas,therespectiveindividualsshouldbenotified.Thenotifiedindividual(s)willfullyexploretheissuewiththestudentinanefforttofindamutuallysatisfactoryresolutionandwillattempttoprovidearesponsewithin5schooldays.Incertaincircumstances,ameetingwithallappropriateATPmemberswillbeconductedinanattempttoaddresstheissue.
Step3–Ifthestudentfeelsthat,evenafterthediscussionwiththeProgramDirector,ClinicalEducationCoordinatorand/ortheHeadAthleticTrainer,thegrievancewasnotaddressed,furtherformalgrievancesmaybesubmittedthroughtheeducationalhierarchyoftheinstitution.Itisrecommendedthatwrittenexplanationofthegrievancebeinitiallyfiledtothedepartmentchairandthensubsequentlytothedivisionchair.AdditionalGrievanceProceduresasStatedinAcademicCatalogAtNorthParkUniversity,thereareanumberofgrievanceproceduresthroughwhichstudentscanraiseandseekredressforwhattheybelievetobeunfair,improperordiscriminatorydecisions,actions,ortreatment.NorthParktakesallgrievancesseriouslyandfollowstheappropriatepolicy.

Athletictrainingisahealthcareprofession.Tofunctionashealthcareprofessionals,allmembersoftheprogrammustunderstandtheimportanceofprofessionalism.Professionalismoccursincommunicationwithavarietyofpatients(includingstudent-athletes),peers,coaches,departmentalpersonnel,othermedicalprofessionals,andphysicians.Professionalismisalsoexemplifiedinbehavioranddress.Studentsrepresenttheprofessiondaily.Therespectgainedbecauseofprofessionalismcanbecrucialtoeffectivejobperformance.
NATACodeofEthicsTheNationalAthleticTrainers’AssociationCodeofEthicsstatestheprinciplesofethicalbehaviorthatshouldbefollowedinthepracticeofathletictraining.Itisintendedtoestablishandmaintainhighstandardsandprofessionalismfortheathletictrainingprofession.Theprinciplesdonotcovereverysituationencounteredbythepracticingathletictrainer,butarerepresentativeofthespiritwithwhichathletictrainersshouldmakedecisions.Theprinciplesarewrittengenerally;thecircumstancesofasituationwilldeterminetheinterpretationandapplicationofagivenprincipleandoftheCodeasawhole.WhenaconflictexistsbetweentheCodeandthelaw,thelawprevails.

CommunicationwithPatientsDuringclinicaleducationexperiences,studentswillcommunicatewithavarietyofpatients(includingstudent-athletepeers).Thiscommunicationshouldbefriendlyyetprofessional.Maintainthepatient’srespectbykeepingaprofessionaldemeanor.
CommunicationwithAthleticDepartmentPersonnelTheAthleticTrainingStudentisapartoftheATP,however,he/sheisnotpartoftheathleticdepartmentandbehaviorshouldreflectthatstatus.TheathleticdepartmentconsistsofNorthParkUniversitystaff,faculty,andadministrators.Theseindividualsshouldbetreatedwiththeutmostrespect.Failuretodosowillresultindisciplinaryaction.
CommunicationwithOtherHealthcareProvidersAthleticTrainingStudentshavetheopportunitytoworkwithphysiciansandotherhealthcareproviders.Observing,askingquestions,andusingdiscretionwhiletheyworkisencouraged.Useappropriatetimingwhenaskingquestionssoastonotinterrupttheevaluationprocessorinfringeonthecareofpatients.
CommunicationwithVisitingTeamsVisitingteamsareguests.Treattheircoaches,student-athletes,andmedicalstaffwithrespectandprofessionalism.Studentsmaybetaskedwithintroducinghimself/herselfandtherestofthemedicalstafftothecoachesormedicalstafffromthevisitingteam.Includedshouldbetheathletictrainingstudent’sname,leveloftrainingasastudent,theAT’sname,andabriefdescriptionofwhatisavailableformedicalservicesatthatvenue(ATatgame,ambulance,physician,ice,water,etc).HostingisareflectionontheAthleticTrainingStudentaswellasontheentireprogram.
ConfidentialityEachpatient(includingstudent-athletes)hastherightofconfidentiality.Atnotimeisitacceptabletodiscussapatient’sinjurywithanyoneotherthantheappropriateathletictraining/medicalstaff.Anyunauthorizeddiscussionofapatient’sinjurywillbreakdownthetrustandrespectthathasbeengained.Inaddition,medicalinformationisfederallyprotectedbyHIPAA.FailuretofollowthispolicyisgroundsforterminationfromtheATP.

ProceduresifanATSsuspectstheyhaveacommunicabledisease1. TheATSwhosuspectshavingorhasbeendiagnosedwithacontagiousorpotentially
contagiousdiseaseorinfectionshouldreporttheirsymptomstotheirpreceptorimmediately,aswellasnotifyingtheNPUATPClinicalEducationCoordinator.
2. Thepreceptorand/orClinicalEducationCoordinatorwilladvisetheATSonparticipationstatusfordidacticand/orclinicaleducationandmayrequiretheATStovisitNPUHealthServicesortheATS’sprimarycarephysician.

Guidelinesforpreventionofexposure,transmission,andinfection1. TheATSshouldpracticeuniversalprecautionsandutilizeappropriatepersonalprotective
equipmentwhenincontactwithanybodilyfluids,openwoundsormucusmembranes.Examplesofpersonalprotectiveequipment:gloves,gowns,masks,eyeprotectionandbreathingbarriers.
2. Frequenthand-washingandpracticinggoodhygienecanhelppreventtransmissionandself-infectionandshouldbeperformedregularlybytheATS.ThisincludespropercarefortheATS’sownopenwoundsandcuts.
3. TheATSshoulduseappropriatePPEforallbandages,towels,syringes,orothermaterialsthatcomeincontactwithbodilyfluidsandproperlydisposeofintheappropriatebiohazardorsharpscontainer.
4. TheATSmustsuccessfullycompleteannualbloodbornepathogentrainingpriortoengaginginformalclinicalexperiences.
Othercommunicablediseasepolicyguidelinesorconsiderations1. Whileengagedinclinicaleducationatanoff-campussite,theATSshouldknowandfollow

AccesstoHealthCareServicesAllNorthParkUniversitystudentshaveaccesstotheHealthServices(3317W.FosterAve)onMonday/Wednesdayfrom12pm-4pm,andTuesday/Thursdayfrom9:30am-1:30pmwhileclassesareinsession.Servicesprovidedinclude,assessmentandtreatment,consultationandreferral,andimmunizationcomplianceguidelines.Ifindicated,studentreferralswillbemadetoSwedishCovenantHospitalFamilyPracticeCenter.Anycostsincurredasaresultoftheirillnessaretheresponsibilityofthestudent.AnnualBloodbornePathogenTrainingCAATE-accreditedAthleticTrainingProgramsrequireallstudentstoundergoyearlyBloodbornePathogentraining.AtNorthPark,thistrainingtakesplaceviaanonlinemediumaccessiblethroughCanvasorATrack.Forobservationalstudents,theyreceivetheirtrainingonthefirstdayofEXS1610:IntrotoAthleticTraining.AllstudentsmustcompletetheBloodbornePathogensQuizwithascoreofatleast90%.StudentsintheprofessionalportionoftheprogramreceivetheirtrainingannuallyonthefirstdayoftheirPracticumcourse.Thetrainingmustbesuccessfullypassedorthestudentwillnotbeallowedtoparticipateinclinicaleducationplacementorobservationalvisits.Thecontentofthesessionvariesslightlyyeartoyear,ensuringthatonlythemostup-to-dateinformationispresented.
BloodbornePathogenControlPlanTheNorthParkUniversityAthleticTrainingProgramshalltakeeveryforeseeableprecautiontoprotectemployeesandstudentsfromthehealthhazardsassociatedwithoccupationalexposuretopathogenicorganismspresentinbloodorotherbodilyfluids.
UniversalPrecautionswillbeobservedbystaffandstudentsinordertopreventcontactwithblood,bloodproducts,orotherpotentiallyinfectiousmaterials.Allofthispotentiallyinfectiousmaterialwillbetreatedasifknowntobeinfectiousregardlessoftheperceivedstatusofthesourceorsourceindividual.

EducationAllstudentsmustparticipateinabloodbornepathogentrainingsessionpriortoengaginginanyclinicalexperiences.Mandatorybloodbornepathogentrainingsessionisheldannuallyatthebeginningofthefallsemester.
EquipmentandUseEachathletictrainingfacilitycontainsextrastorageofbiohazardsuppliesbeyondwhatiscontainedineachathletictrainingkit.Thisincludesgloves,biohazardbags,faceshields,eyeprotection,breathingbarriers,cleaningagents,andbloodspillkits.Theseitemsareavailableatnocosttostaffandstudents.
Theremustberoutineuseofpersonalprotectiveequipmenttopreventskinandmucousmembraneexposureinallcaseswherecontactwiththeskinmayoccur.Glovesshouldbeusedatalltimeswhenhandlingblood,bodyfluids,mucousmembranes,brokenskin,wounddressings,andwhenhandlingsoiledsurfaces.Glovesmustbechangedandhandswashedaftertreatingeachindividualpatient.Gloveswillbecarriedtoallpracticesandgamesituationsandwillbereadilyavailableinallathletictrainingfacilities.
Whenperformingmouth-to-mouthresuscitationaprotectionbarriershouldbeused.Apocketmaskormicroshieldwillbecarriedineachtrainingkit.Therewillalsobemasksavailableintheathletictrainingfacilities.
DisposalAllsoiledsoftitemswillbediscardedinabiohazardcontainerlocatedineitheroftheNPUathletictrainingfacilities.Biohazardbagsareredandwillbeinanenclosedcontainermarkedwithabiohazardsticker.
Allsharpitems(scalpels,sharkblades,syringes,andglassproducts)willbediscardedinasharpscontainer.Sharpscontainersareredandmarkedwithabiohazardsticker.SharpscontainerscanbelocatedinbothoftheNPUathletictrainingfacilities.Needlesshouldnotberecappedorremovedfromthesyringe.
BiohazardmaterialsareregularlytakentoNPUHealthServiceswhereitispickedupforproperdisposal.
DecontaminationThereshouldbeimmediatedecontaminationofitemsandsurfacesaftercontactwithpotentiallyinfectiousmaterials.
Handsoruncoveredskinthathasbeenexposedtoanybodyfluidsshouldbewashedorantisepticallycleanedimmediatelyandalsocleaned/washedwhenglovesareremoved.HandwashingfacilitiesareavailableintheCarlsonAthleticTrainingFacility,HelwigAthleticTrainingFacility,ineachathleticlockerroomandinallofthepublicrestrooms.Ifexposurehappensoutside,handsanitizerisavailableintheathletictrainingkitsonsite.Ifthisalternatemethodisused,the

Uniformsortowelsnotsaturatedwithbloodmustfollowthe“BloodonUniform”proceduresoutlinedintheAthleticTrainingServicesPolicy&ProcedureManual.
Vaccination
AllstudentshavethepotentialforexposuretohepatitisBandmustprovideproofofvaccinationorsignadeclinationwaiverthatwillbeuploadedtoCastleBranch.
RecordsTheAthleticTrainingProgramDirectorwillmaintainallrequiredrecords.
BloodbornePathogensPost-ExposureControlPlan
Post-ExposureandFollow-upWhenanincidentoccurswhereanindividualisexposedtobloodbornepathogens,itshouldbeimmediatelyreportedtotheirsupervisor.StudentsshouldreporttheincidenttotheirpreceptorandtheClinicalEducationCoordinator.
Theindividualexposedwhileon-siteatNPUshouldbetakentoNPUhealthservicesortheSwedishCovenantHospitalEmergencyRoomforevaluation.Intheeventthatanexposureincidentoccursatanoff-campusaffiliatedsite,thestudentshouldreporttothenearestEmergencyDepartmentortheirPrimaryCarePhysician.
Allindividualswhoincuranexposurewillbeofferedpost“exposureevaluationandfollow-up”inaccordancewithOSHAstandard.Thefollow-upwillincludethefollowing:
1. Writtendocumentationoftherouteofexposureandthecircumstancesrelatedtotheincidentassoonasfeasiblefollowingexposure.ThisistobereturnedtotheClinicalEducationCoordinatorforstudents,andHumanResourcesforstaffandfaculty.
2. Ifincidentinvolvedapunctureorcutfromsharps,theareashouldbeexposed,expressed(encouragebleedingifthewoundissmall)andthoroughlywashedwithsoapandwaterfor15minutes.Ifsoapandwaterarenotavailable,thenanantiseptic(solution,wipe,spray)shouldbeused.
3. WashanyareaexposedtobloodorOPIMwithtepidwaterandsoapforatleast5minutes.Alcohol-basedhandrinses,gels,foams(containing60+%alcohol)shouldbeusedonintactskinwhenwaterisnotavailable.

4. Ifsplashesaretotheeyes,irrigateeyeswithcleanwaterorcommerciallyavailableeyewashsolutionfor15minutes.
5. Ifpossible,thesourceindividualshouldbeidentified.Afterthesourceindividual’sconsenthasbeenobtained,theirbloodshouldbetestedforHIV/HBVinfection.
6. Resultsoftestingofthesourceindividualwillbemadeavailabletotheexposedindividualoncetheyhavebeeninformedabouttheapplicablelawsandregulationsconcerningdisclosureoftheidentityandinfectionofthesourceindividual.
7. TheindividualwillbeofferedtheoptionofhavingtheirbloodcollectedfortestingtodeterminetheirHIV/HBVserologicalstatus.
8. TheProgramDirectorwillbedesignatedtoassurethatthepolicyoutlinedaboveiseffectivelycarriedoutaswellastomaintainrecordsrelatedtothispolicy.
Oncetheseprocedureshavebeencompleted,theexposedindividualshouldbeenseenbyaqualifiedhealthcareprofessionaltodiscusstheirmedicalstatusandabilitytoreturntoclassesand/orwork.Thisincludesanevaluationofanyreportedillness,aswellasanyrecommendedtreatment.
