Behavioral Expectations
Competing in varsity sport at the University of Waterloo is a proud tradition. Student-athletes are important ambassadors for their team, the Department of Athletics, and the University of
Waterloo.
Student Athlete Orientation 2015-16
1. Conduct yourself – both in and out of competition - in a manner that positively represents your team, the Department of Athletics, and the University of Waterloo.
2. Be responsible in terms of how you represent yourself and your affiliation with your team on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc. Assume that whatever you say, write, or post on any of these sites is in the public domain. These behavioral expectations extend to how you represent yourself in these forums.
3. Abide by the Department’s Alcohol Policy and the University of Waterloo’s Alcohol policy.
Behavioral Expectations – Con’t

Alcohol PolicyAll coaches, staff and athletes should be familiar with University of Waterloo Policy 21 – Alcohol Use and Education, and should observe the following Departmental policies governing alcohol use.
1. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited in any unlicensed premises at the University of Waterloo or while representing the University of Waterloo off campus – including locker rooms, meeting rooms, hotel rooms, team buses, and private offices. This pertains to all individuals including staff, coaches, alumni, and students.
2. It is inappropriate for coaches and staff to drink alcohol socially with students in licensed establishments, with some exceptions as noted below.
Student Athlete Orientation 2015-16
Alcohol Policy3. While it is acceptable and within the law for students (of legal drinking age) to
consume alcohol in licensed establishments and at approved Departmental events, coaches and all staff have a duty of care when in the presence of students who are consuming alcohol to:
a. Not consume alcohol in the presence of students, with some limited exceptions such as approved Departmental and team events where coaches should use discretion and appropriate judgment concerning what is acceptable and responsible consumption in the presence of students.
b. Monitor the consumption and behavior of students who are consuming alcohol in your presence; and,
c. Intervene to take corrective action if any student appears inebriated or in contravention of this alcohol policy.
Student Athlete Orientation 2015-16
Alcohol Policy4. Coaches, staff and team leaders have a responsibility to be positive role
models, use appropriate judgment, and counsel their fellow students about these policies and the responsible consumption of alcohol and the risks associated with alcohol abuse.
5. Students are required to comply with this alcohol policy and to avoid the abuse of alcohol which may have serious physical and behavioral consequences (see Warrior Athletics Behavioral Expectations). Failure to comply with this policy may result in individual or team suspensions, as well as any other applicable legal actions.
Student Athlete Orientation 2015-16
Behavioral Expectations – Con’t4. Refrain from any form of hazing or team initiations, including the following:
4.1 Any form of behavior that demeans another individual.
4.2 Any form of behavior that requires as a rite of passage or ritual (e.g. “rookie initiation”) an individual to engage in any form of behavior considered to be physically harmful, sexually offensive or abusive, or emotionally demeaning.
4.3 Any form of behavior that is expressly intended to publicly demean or ridicule an individual.

5. Respect your coaches, teammates, and fellow University of Waterloo students.
For further information or clarification about these expectations, contact your coach, the Director of Athletics, or the Associate Director of Athletics at any time. Failure to adhere to these expectations will result in sanctions (which may include individual or team suspensions) as well as the issuance of a student-athlete behavioral contract outlining these sanctions and other requirements that must be undertaken to continue participation as a student-athlete. It is our hope that by adhering to these expectations, all students will enjoy a positive and supportive environment at the University of Waterloo.
